Fig and Olive opening in Scarsdale!
Yay...My friends and I are all originally from Manhattan and we work out at NYSC in the same complex. When we saw the sign we were almost jumping for joy! Once you open we'll have to go burn extra calories and then spend them at your restaurant...we can't wait!
Fig and Olive opening in Scarsdale!
I just saw the sign today in the Vernon Hills shopping center. It's location will be where Smith and Hawken used to be. Anyone know when they plan to open? I'm so excited!

Fairway in Pelham is Open!
I went again last week at 4:30 on a Wed and the store was VERY empty. And st. Andre cheese was ridiculously cheap. I predict I'll be ordering less cheese from FreshDirect from now on :-)
What do you keep in your car?
This is funny to me, I just got a new (large) car and have a whole storage tote bag going on.
Currently food wise, I have my daughter's favorite organic chocolate milk boxes, kashi cereal bars, juice boxes and a small cooler in case I stop for something perishable. Non food wise - a change of clothes for both kids, diapers and wipes and my sneakers for the gym.
belchertown northampton amherst
My in-laws live in Amherst, a few of our favorites are...
-Carmelina's, 96 Russell Street. High-end Italian, seafood emphasis.
-Amherst Chinese Food, 62 Main Street. Family-style Chinese, with extensive vegetable specials from the owner's farm.
-Flayvors of Cook Farm, 129 South Maple, about two miles south of the malls. Food is basic grill stuff only -- the main attraction is real ice cream made from real milk from real (on-site) cows.
-Bakus African Restaurant 197 N Pleasant St
-Arigato Japanese Restaurant 11 North Pleasant St ( I think this is the place I am thinking of , it's a little restaurant across from the green by amherst college and the farmers market.
Have fun!
New Peruvian Restaurant on Central Ave, Yonkers?
I saw that a couple weeks ago when i went to the Indian Grocer in the same shopping center. I'm really excited to try them and glad to hear that they are open.
@ jcmods - the only really good rotisserie chicken around here is at Costco...

(repost)
OMG what craziness, do not go today unless you are REALLY bored. I went around 10 am thinking most people would be at work and that it couldn't be THAT crowded. I was wrong. I left around 12 noon and there were police everywhere directing traffic and not letting anyone make left hand turns so getting home took forever and the line to check out went to the back of the store and was not moving quickly. parking was also hard to find, but the parking lot looked a little less chaotic when I was leaving than it did when i was arriving.
The store has a slightly confusing lay out, sort of like Stews,so I think I missed about half the store. i'm sure it will just take some getting used to. I wanted to check out the cafe but never saw it. Prices were good but I was underwhelmed by the cauliflower and english cucumbers both of which looked a little wilted.
The aisles are much wider than Harlem and UWS which is great. And there is definitely a much larger selection. I'll probably still use Fresh Direct for a while (so much easier than grocery shopping with 2 small children) but hopefully the crowds will die down a bit and this will be my go-to grocery store for produce and such!
I just had some of their smoked salmon on a bagel for lunch yummy!
Looking for a good Salad in Westchester
Great to know! I was in there the other morning and was looking at the salad menu. It looked amazing. If they're really that big I may get one for hubby and me next time I don't feel like cooking dinner!
Looking for a good Salad in Westchester
+1 on La Provence. I LOVE their salads. I get one with chicken, poached pears and candied walnuts that is sooo good! They have others that are also excellent, but that is my fave.
Westchester - any restaurants people DO like? Dinner for 4
Agreed on Peniche, I went with 3 friends and everything we tried was good to very good and the bill was more than reasonable.
I also love Haiku in Bronxville - The new Haikus have been getting some negative reviews here on chowhound, but the one in Bronxville is great. I'm actually going Thursday night with a group of friends if you want more info.

LOL Julie - So true. I may not be able to sleep tomorrow night waiting for it to open ;-)

So now in addition to the "3 R's (4 if you count respect which most students don't learn at home, but at school) it is up to ALL teachers to teach nutrition? I truly hope that you're not implying that teachers are ok with mediocrity in the schools...
And to Frank - I'm not sure where you live, but you've quite obviously never been to my school.
When do you eat your salad?
I much prefer my salad first. At home I sometimes serve salad and dinner together to make life easier, but I'll almost always eat my salad before my meal. My husband's family has salad at the end of the meal. I find this interesting since we are all New Englanders, meaning it isn't apparently a regional thing.
My one exception is when having pizza, I like to dip my crust in the salad dressing (is that weird?!) and I find I eat my salad more towards the end of the meal...

DD,
ITA,I'm so confounded by the negativity, especially on a board where people dedicate so much time and energy to food. Shouldn't young children get a good start in life and learn how to eat nutritiously? We're not talking about adults who should know better. These kids deserve better than what they're getting...
Help! Someone gave me a Perdue Roaster!
Interesting...I pretty much only buy Perdue since Consumer reports tested
"fresh, whole broilers bought at stores nationwide, two-thirds harbored salmonella and/or campylobacter, the leading bacterial causes of foodborne disease"... Perdue tested as the "cleanest" birds...
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2010/january/food/chicken-safety/overview/chicken-safety-ov.htm
Cook the bird the way you normally would, I'm sure it will be fine.

gmk - I really don't follow your logic. I feel like you're saying there is no point in even introducing nutrition until kids are more active. In my opinion that's like saying there's no point in teaching science unless all the kids in all schools are up to grade level with their math standards. Yes, both subjects are connected, not necessarily mutually exclusive, but they are indeed 2 separate subjects that students need to be educated about.
AND there is a world of difference between between a 500 calorie salad or 500 calories from chicken nuggets and fries...

jarona,we might have been neighbors at some point (83rd and York here). I also saw the same when I lived on 92/madison. However, the 5 mile trek up madison and over the bridge into the Bronx brings a world of difference.

Smartie - when in grad school my friends and I would get punchy, silly and even giggly by the end of the evening. We were a group of late 20/early 30 somethings who understood that if we couldn't handle sitting for 3-5 hours straight, how could we expect our 6-10 year olds to sit all day and still be productive?! It's ridiculous.

DD I also loved your post! I don't think most people realize what goes on in the school systems. The timing of lunch can be crazy, especially for the little ones who need to eat more frequently. I agree that exercise before eating would be he smart thing, but I never see that happen.

While on one hand I agree with you and have myself been an advocate for getting kids out to play, you need to realize that in some neighborhoods (even at the school) this is not safe. There are school in this country with no library, or playground or indoor gym. Initially I was surprised at how little my kids go out to play, until I was around long enough to see that random shootings do happen and the parks weren't safe. In NYC physical education is becoming mandated, but not all school shave the ability to let the kids play more than once a week, and that's when the weather is good.

LOL and this post is just one of the reasons i adore you Jfood! It seems on this show so far the parents need to be educated about nutrition as much as the kids...

I really am surprised anyone could be against this show and JO. As a mother and a teacher I was appalled by what these kids were eating. I'm glad they're not just focusing on the school lunches, because the problem is in the home as well. The lack of nutrition is a huge issue especially in poorer communites where healthy food is often not even an option, see the below article.
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/09/where-produce-is-scarce-supermarkets-will-grow/
I work in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the poorest zipcode in NYC and have found that my kids are really happy to try new things if you make them a part of the process. My first year teaching I was surprised when I realized my kids would prefer to eat my fresh fruit salad than have candy.
When I did a unit on nutrition with my 4th graders I found many had never tried fresh berries. I brought in breakfast for 3 classes and they devoured granola, yogurt and fruit salad all things they had never had!
When I saw those kids not even able to identify fruits and vegetables that my 2 year old knows that should be a concern to all.
Weekend in Newport. Looking for rec's
I agree with dennis. We ate there last Summer and I probably wouldn't go back. My mother had a shrimp scampi that was very watered down/no flavor. It tasted like they added shrimp that was still frozen to the dish. My husband's dinner was ok and I don't even remember what I had. The only dinner that was very good was a seared tuna entree my Father ordered. Over all I also felt they were overpriced.
In all fairness I should note I was pregnant at the time and probably didn't order as I typically would so I might give them another shot this Summer, but I know my Mother would never return. If you so go they are cash only.
Some of my favorites are 22 Bowen's, The Commodore Room at the Black Pearl, Inn at Castle Hill and White Horse tavern for brunch.
I also like the place across the street from the Mooring on Thames, with the windows that open onto the street, I can't remember the name right now. I'll see if I can find it!
What should I teach my 5 year old grand daughter about cooking?
I also agree with allfrog - at 2 my daughter loves just watching me cook and helping to stir/pour etc. I'm loving that link, thanks for sharing!
At 5 I remember making french toast with my grandma and by 6 or 7 I was even at the stove cooking for my family. My daughter loves peeling apples to make applesauce and any type of baking. I leave the oven light on so she can watch muffins/cupcakes/brownies rise. Snapping green beans is another fave, you can also let her cut softer fruits with a plastic knife or butter knife and make fruit salad. same could be said of squash and other soft veggies.
Have fun, I can't wait to cook more with my daughter!
How to cure a Diet Coke addict?
Are you sure they raise blood sugar? I recently had gestational diabetes and met with a nutritionist. I was told diet juice/soda was fine and was required to check my blood sugar 4 times/day. Once I switched to diet soda and crystal light my blood sugar was perfect. Part of my problem was that my nausea had me drinking a lot of ginger ale which i never drink when not pregnant (unless sick of course!)
How to cure a Diet Coke addict?
I'm also a casual diet coke drinker. I basically have one (about 16ounces so maybe 2!) at lunch. However, I have on occasion done a detox diet for 2-3 days where I eat nothing but fresh fruit and veggie juices during the day and then a small dinner of steamed veggies and brown rice. On these occasions I have found it harder to give up my lunch time diet coke than it is to give up food. I do find that a little scary!
What are you planning for dinner this week?
I am sooo glad you posted this! I have done this for the last few years and am just getting back to cooking after having a baby. I'm getting some great dinner ideas from other posters!
My MO is on Sunday's I check my refrigerator and see what I have and want to use up. Then I check what's on sale, then I plan my menu for the week and place an order for groceries from Fresh Direct. I find this helps me to use up what i have and reduces waste.
This week our dinners are
Mon -Rotisserie chicken with scalloped potatoes and zucchini
Tues - turkey Chili with Rice and salad
Wed - Short ribs in a slow cooker, black bean salad (I think) and a veggie TBD
Thurs- Chicken fajitas or enchiladas, green salad
Fri - Pizza or shrimp (I'm catholic so no meet on Fri)
We're rarely home on the weekends so I don't usually plan ahead for those dinners, if I am home and in the mood to cook I'll make a big batch of soup or something that I can freeze.
A few tips that help me...
*I try to use the slow cooker once a week especially if we have a late afternoon appointment or play date.
*Freeze leftovers for other dinners (for example the chili we're having this week was made a couple months ago.)
*If something comes up or my hubby is coming home late I jus switch one days meal with another if that's more convenient.
Osso Buco
That is the recipe I use as well. It's the first one I ever used and it came out perfectly!
Salads that don't involve lettuce
We have salad most nights with dinner. This fennel salad is one of my favorites when I get bored with greens/cukes/tomato.
It's even easier to throw together if using canned mandarin slices...

Christmas borscht at Velselka--yum!
I also LOVE their borscht. I just got the Veselka cookbook as an early Christmas present, the recipe is in the book, if you'd like it I can try to scan and send it to you.
