Tucson - Proper and Diablo Burger

Two much hyped food Additions from Flagstaff have recently opened in Tucson. We went to each of them a week apart.

Diablo Burger offers grass fed, no hormones beef. Served on house-made english muffin buns and fries. Our group of four found the burgers to be prepared as requested but the taste was Meh. It's a small, fairly stark, room. Service was fine but those that had glasses of wine noted that the pour size varied greatly. We did not found a reason for returning.

The following week had us at Proper for lunch. When we walked in we started getting good vibes - attractive room, tables and booths, large windows. Nice!

I had the Gatsby. I don't like Blue Cheese at all, and it was no problem to omit it. A good sized lunch, too much for me. I brought 1/2 sandwich home but - oink oink - I did scarf down the frites. My wife had Pork Belly Sliders. Thumbs up!

Dessert - Chili & Chocolate Ganache Tart. A very nice hit of dark chocolate and a zing of chili. We will definitely order this again.

Service - Impeccable and calm.

Music - lively but not loud.

Glad you liked 47 Scott.

We've found Maynard's to be attractive, but somehow the pieces never seem to come together.

Tucson - Poppy Kitchen

Poppy Kitchen is now open in the former J-Bar space at La Paloma.

We've been twice in the last two weeks and it looks promising. This restaurant is by the Abbey & Jax Kitchen (Jax is closed) people.

We're talking about Hawaii, not New York. The place is fine, the food enjoyable - but it ain't the big city.

Well, as you know, a great view and tasty chow are not often found together.

Being a chow person I'd skip the view part and take her to Penca downtown - http://www.pencarestaurante.com/

Cheap(er) eats Maui

There isn't much on Maui that is anything other than casual. If you are seeking t-shirt and shorts places - they are everywhere.

You might consider the Gazebo for breakfast, Mala Ocean Tavern for lunch or dinner, and Okazuya for takeout as starters,

Fresh Poi - made while you wait isn't too bad. The pre-made stuff you usually see at a Luau is a different story.

Plate Lunch?

No, frankly that area tends to be too touristy for us. I'm sure there are plate lunch places for you to discover.

Looking at Google they suggest Da Kitchen http://www.da-kitchen.com/kihei-menu.... and L&L Drive Inn - both are in Kihei.
