Decent sit-down restaurant on Ocean City, Md boardwalk?

We have a few hours to kill on the Ocean City MD boardwalk. Beyond Thrashers and all the iconic walk-ups, is there anywhere decent to sit down and order a good meal? We need to stay right on the boardwalk, for complicated reasons.

What's your absolute favorite/best apple dessert?

Was it an apple Charlotte? Those apples get super-duper soft.

Places to eat near Tufts?

Thanks, Madrid. He has visited Boston before and knows he likes the city, so being so close by is definitely a draw. Maybe we'll do a run on the red line for fun.

Places to eat near Tufts?

Thanks, everyone! I have dual agendas for this visit... I'm partly aiming to help him get an accurate feel for student life (and food choices just off campus), but I'm also partly trying to sell him on Tufts. So I don't mind taking him to a few places now that might be out of his budget as an actual student, if that helps him come away with a warm Tufts glow :) Evil Mom, right?

Places to eat near Swarthmore College?

I'm taking my son on a tour of Swarthmore College over spring break. I'd like to find some just-off-campus places for lunch and dinner, to give him a feel for what the area would be like as a student (beyond the obvious appeal of nearby Philly). Can any one recommend good places for a teenage boy whose tastes run towards burgers, pizza, and steak & cheese? Looking for something non-chain, maybe a little quirky or mom-and-pop-ish. Thanks!

Summer House off Rockville Pike - baked goods- very good

Thanks for the review. And yes, that is Rockville for sure :) There is no such place as "North Bethesda" or "North Potomac" for that matter.

Private party dining Rockville / Gaithersburg / Potomac

Thanks, everyone. We settled on Uncle Julio's at Rio. Although they don't have a private room, they'll seat us together in a corner, and their prices were very reasonable for family-style fajita platters. Plus, we'll get happy hour pricing on drinks, woo hoo :)

DC - Durham trip

Guilty Gourmand, I'm hoping to sell him on Duke and Durham, if not 95S. Taco Hell won't likely do the job :)

In this case, stopping for road food on the way down is all part of the adventure :)

DC - Durham trip

We're driving down Friday 3/27, planning to hit lunch on the way somewhere, and arrive in Durham by early to mid-afternoon. Then Friday night dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday AM college tour and lunch, then back home Saturday afternoon (with a stop mid-way, maybe for ice cream or a coffee shop).

We're hoping to spend Friday afternoon and evening getting a feel for the area and letting him picture himself as a student there, so any fun activities would be a bonus. Breakfast ranks high on his list of life's pleasures :)

Ah, thanks. I think of myself as mid-Atlantic, being DC based, but I definitely think of Richmond as south :)

Private party dining Rockville / Gaithersburg / Potomac

Hi Folks,

We have a group of 30-40 people coming into town for a family event, and it looks like we are going to take them ALL out to dinner the night before, rehearsal-dinner style (although it's not a wedding).

The out-of-towners are staying in a hotel at Rio Washingtonian center. Can anyone help me brainstorm super-cheap places to take a crowd that size? I'm shooting for a decent atmosphere (no order-at-the-counter places) and low prices. A private dining area would be a plus.

I've got quotes so far from Il Porto, That's Amore, Mamma Lucia (Rockville), Gregorio's (Potomac). Although these are all Italian places, I'm open to anything that has mass appeal. I contacted Matchbox on Rockville Pike, thinking a Pizza Party menu would be fun, but they have a minimum charge of $3000. Cafe Deluxe (at Washingtonian Center) is too pricey. Uncle Julio's and Guapo's don't have private seating, although it would be great for them to walk over from the hotel.

Mamma Lucia's is the least expensive quote so far, but they are a little short on atmosphere. I wish Matchbox would have us! Can you think of other good pizza places in the area? 2 Amy's is too far and too pricey, and CS pizza is too casual, I think.

Any ideas??

DC - Durham trip

Many thanks for all the leads!

Yes, this is a prospective student visit, so my goal is to let him get a feel for some off-campus food options and for the area in general. We live in the MD suburbs of DC, and you would think that might mean that my kid would have developed a more adventurous palate... but no. He started life as the world's pickiest eater and he's now just a very typical teenage guy, food-wise.

He will definitely dig the Monut Donut recommendation, and he has a soft spot for breakfast foods. Food trucks are fun too :)

Any thoughts about good places to stop for lunch on the way there or back? I was thinking maybe around Richmond, but further north or south is fine too. Maybe someplace mom-and-pop-ish?

Regional snacks for gifts?

Fisher's Popcorn (a local MD/DE beach favorite) is sold in shelf-stable bags at WF in DC. Super yummo caramel popcorn... you can't go wrong!

I should have said that we'll be in town for a dinner, a breakfast, and a lunch :)

DC - Durham trip

Hi Folks,

I'm driving my son from DC to Durham to visit Duke University. Can anyone recommend a teenage-boy-friendly place to stop along the way for lunch? He's partial to burgers, pizza, fried chicken, and the like.

I'd also love recommendations for places to eat near Duke, again geared towards a potential college student's tastes.

Thanks!

NYE dessert suggestions needed

So many great ideas to ponder! Thanks everyone. I LOVE the pavlova idea, but I think it would be harder logistically ... we're staying at a friend's beach house, along with 2 other couples, so I'd either have to take over their kitchen on the day of, or make it ahead (and meringues don't usually keep well). So I'm leaning towards a chocolate roulade, probably with a raspberry / whipped marscapone filling.

Very true. Roulade is a good idea. It can be light, it makes a nice presentation, and what's not to like? :)

Do you have a favorite roulade recipe?

Do you think pavlova might be too similar to the Ile Flottante I served last NYE to the same group? Different presentation, but both are meringues... maybe better to branch out?

NYE dessert suggestions needed

I have been tasked with making dessert for a New Year's Eve dinner party. The host is serving surf and turf. Since steak and lobster are both rich, I want to stay away from heavy, rich desserts... so probably something not chocolate. I made Ile Flottante for this gang last year and it went over well. Maybe poached pears or a citrus mousse?

Can anyone suggest elegant special-occasion desserts that would go well after a a rich meal?

Help with crab and corn flatbread recipe?

I had the most mouthwatering flatbread at Off the Hook in Bethany Beach, DE this summer, made with a topping of fresh crab, fresh corn, and I think maybe leeks. Trying to recreate it at home, and I can't find any recipes even close to use as a springboard. I guess you'd sautee the leeks, or maybe roast them with evoo, probably char the corn on the cob and then shuck it. The crab just goes on in glorious little chunks. Would you try to bind everything so that it hold together but it's not overly sauce-y, or would you just sprinkle each ingredient over the flatbread individually? Add a fresh herb like thyme? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Road food between Quebec City and Burlington, VT?

Thanks, Maximilien. Do you know if any of the wineries serve food? It might be very nice to stop and stretch our legs at a winery that had a dining room. I think it would be ok if we limit ourselves to one or two glasses :)
