Dinner with baby

Looking for suggestions for restaurants in Montreal that won't mind us dining with an 11-month old baby on a Sunday and Monday night. Looking for good food! Doesn't have to be fancy, but delicious would be nice!

Staying downtown, but can cab it for good food.

lunch downtown

IQ Food is great - there is one below the TD Towers, and another at street level on Wellington, in Brookfield Place (between Yonge & Bay).

Brunch Reservations

Looking for suggestions for a great brunch that takes reservations. Downtown/Downtown West/Ronces/Bloor West/Parkdale/College preferred. But willing to travel within reason.

5 adults and a baby.

Reservations are important. Nice enough to have a leisurely holiday get-together.

Thanks in advance!

Braised Short Ribs?

Thanks for the tip! We haven't been to Le Select for a few years now, so this sounds like a great reason to go back! They have the best French Onion soup too!

Braised Short Ribs?

I haven't been since May, but we had a great dinner there. Service was friendly, nice relaxed but trendy atmosphere. I will definitely return sometime!

Braised Short Ribs?

Thanks again for the recommendation. We went to the Westerly last night, and had an awesome meal. The braised short ribs were delicious. The apps and dessert were great too. We'll definitely be returning there - the rest of the menu looked great!

The Kingsway Dining

I've only ever been for drinks, but I've heard from friends that the dinner at Monk's Kettle was quite impressive.

Braised Short Ribs?

Actually, upon reflection, horseradish mashed potatoes were the accompaniment for our wedding meal too. So that seals the deal for me too, haha!

Braised Short Ribs?

Thanks! Just checked their menu, and it looks like maybe the menu is changed seasonally - I don't see any braised short ribs on the menu right now. But this is definitely another spot I'm hoping to try in the near future.

Best cupcakes in T.O.?

I firmly believe Swirls has the best cupcakes in the city. We tried LOTS of places before our wedding last spring (For the Love of Cake, Life Is Sweet, The Cupcakery, just to name a few), and Swirls came out on top for taste, quality, flavour, and price. I actually did a taste test with some family members, and gave them secret ballots to vote, and the Swirls cupcakes won by a landslide. We had the Lemon Luau and Vanilla cupcakes at our wedding, and both were a huge hit. I go back often enough, and have tried many other flavours. Another of my favourites is the Marble flavour. HIGHLY recommend Swirls.

Best cupcakes in T.O.?

Prairie Girl is just okay - they do the minis great, but their full-size cupcakes have WAY more icing than is proportional to the cupcake (and this is coming from a girl who normally saves cupcake icing until last, because it's my favourite part). But at Prairie Girl, I find I can't even eat a fraction of the icing on the full-size cupcakes without feeling like I'm going to pass out. Try Swirls! We tried LOTS of cupcake shops before our wedding last Spring, and Swirls was a clear winner.

Amazing, thank you! I just looked at the menu and it sounds delicious. I've been hearing about the Westerly too, so this would be a great opportunity to try it!

Braised Short Ribs?

Trying to come up with an idea for our first wedding anniversary, and thought it might be nice to celebrate with a dinner similar to what we had at as our wedding dinner - braised short ribs (at the Capitol Event Theatre; highly recommend!).

Where can we find the BEST braised short ribs in the city?

Thanks for your input!

Eglinton Grand - HELP????

I might be too late in responding -- but if you like the feel of the Grand, you may also want to check out the Capitol Event Theatre. It's another theatre, and it's nearby at Yonge & Castlefield (just north of Eglinton). We had our wedding there last month and the food was AMAZING. There is a wide selection to choose from - we chose 2 different entrees, and at our wedding, the serving staff went around to each table and each guest got to order from a choice of the 2 menu options. Very classy! We couldn't believe the number of people who raved about the food afterwards. The venue is so gorgeous too. I'd be happy to answer any questions about our experience!

Looking for Unique Wedding Venue for a very large group-Help!

Check out the Capitol. I'm not sure that it will hold that number for dinner AND dancing - but it will hold well over 200. It will hold more if you are foregoing the dancefloor I think?

Unique/Gorgeous Wedding Venues in Toronto & Area?

I highly recommend the Capitol Event Theatre! We had very similar criteria to yours. Food was VERY important, and we definitely didn't want a carpeted banquet hall.

Any reviews on Capitol Event theatres?

I cannot even begin to express how pleased we were with the Capitol Event Theatre, where we held our May 2011 wedding. Everything about our wedding surpassed our expectations. Our guests were so impressed with the venue and loved the fun atmosphere. The huge bar and lounge area really set a fun tone and create a social setting unlike a standard wedding/banquet hall. The grandeur of the main room (with hardwood floors and a huge chandelier and stage) is classy and traditional, but with a modern vibe. We also loved that we could use the original marquee outside to put our own names and customized posters.

We held both our ceremony and our reception at the Capitol, with a cocktail reception on the Mezzanine level in between.

The meal was delicious, and we received such great feedback on all the various menu options (we started with a broccoli soup with goat cheese ravioli in it, and for the entrée, guests had an choice of chicken or braised short ribs – the nice thing was, they got to order their choice AT the venue, rather than having to make up their mind in advance via the RSVP. For dessert, we had crème brulée, and my Maid of Honour tells me it was the best dessert she ever had). We have heard nothing but raving reviews, even from the celiac vegetarians, who must have been a challenge for the chef. The food was still of top quality - my braised short ribs fell off the bone and practically melted in my mouth – and the presentation was also impressive. The late night snacks we chose were comfort foods – mini grilled cheese, sliders, and regular and sweet potato fries. Everyone enjoyed the meal so much that we heard many people say that were too full to enjoy the late night snacks. A good problem to have!

But above all else, the service was the most notably impressive aspect of the day. The staff at the Capitol were so incredibly accommodating to any and every request we made. Upon our arrival, my Mom asked how difficult it would be for me to get a cup of tea to calm my nerves before the ceremony began. We were worried that we would be putting the staff out during a very busy time - but the staff were so eager to help, and delivered a hot cup of tea to the “Green Room” (bridal suite) faster than we could have imagined. They also ensured that the Green Room was well stocked with water, wine, and anything else the bridal party might have wanted. They servers kept asking us if there was *anything* we wanted. We truly felt like VIPs, all night long.

During the dinner, the staff kept the napkins folded on the tables. And one thing that really impressed our guests – at each table, the plates were all laid by the servers at the exact same time. It felt like such a classy affair!

The bar staff (who even concocted a yellow drink to match with our wedding colours) and serving staff were amazing - so personable, so accommodating, and of great spirits all night long. All this while maintaining top-notch professionalism and class. Our guests truly felt welcomed, and I believe that the friendliness of the staff significantly contributed to that.

Leading up to the event, Carmelinda and Katelyn (a student I believe, who has since moved on) were both very pleasant to deal with, and quite organized. They really ensured that all our special requests were made. My only issue, which really had no impact on my day – was with the in-house A/V guys (Evolved Entertainment), who were slow to respond to emails and not overly helpful. We brought in our own DJ, but had to still pay $750 to use the Capitol’s audio system.

We cannot stop talking about what a perfect day it was. We recognize what a unique and customized event it was, and don't believe that we could have achieved that same feeling at any other venue. We have not one single regret about our day. We will be very quick to recommend the Capitol to anyone looking to throw a big event.

Weddings at the Berkeley Church

I have to agree, I found the same issues each time I visited Berkeley, and for that reason we decided not to hold our wedding there after all. We visited several times, including a few times while they were setting up for other weddings. I found dust balls on the stairwells, furniture shoved in corners, beer bottles and bottle caps everywhere.... on one occasion we were there shortly before a wedding was to begin, and Andy told us that the night before, the staff had had a little after party after another wedding... and I realized that the bottle caps and cigarette butts everywhere were likely the results of that after party. I was also left contemplating whose booze they were drinking, and at whose expense....? Also, we asked them about the bad reviews they'd received, and it was amazing how negatively they spoke of past bride & grooms. They essentially told us that if a bride & groom don't have the same "style" as they have, then it's a recipe for disaster, and that they'd even given brides their deposits back and asked them to go have their wedding elsewhere.... can you imagine being "fired" from your wedding venue??? We really WANTED to have our wedding there, as we loved the venue and the feel, etc. But we were just finding too many negative reviews and had too many doubts about cleanliness, customer service, etc. We felt better about our decision after talking to an acquaintance who had had their wedding there and had very similar feedback to the negative reviews: their guests had been hungry and cold. Good luck to anyone having their wedding there. I am sure you can still have a fantastic event there, but just be sure to work through these issues with the staff beforehand!!

acme burger (queensway/royal york) - has anyone tried?

I haven't had Acme burger for a few months now, but everytime I have (numerous times over the past 2-3 years), I've quite enjoyed it. The burgers are tasty and seem fresh to me, and are proper grill burgers. The fries are also great. And while I don't get the Acme sauce on the burger, I do always ask for a little side of the sauce, which is great to dip fries in!

I am always a little concerned to see the place empty - as I usually use a crowd as a gauge for how the food, service, and cleanliness are. So an always-empty place makes me wonder what others know that I don't know. But based on my experiences, I'd choose this place over Royal Meats any day!

Royal Meat BBQ (Islington/Queensway)

After hearing some raving reviews from others in the neighbourhood, I was anxious to try this place. But sadly, I was disappointed, and found it to be vastly overrated. Driving up, I was initially impressed with the decor and cleanliness of the place... until I made a visit to the ladies' room, where I was actually a bit disgusted - it didn't feel clean at all, and I always go by the principle "if the public spaces aren't clean, imagine what the back rooms are like". No soap to wash my hands, either! (And I'd say that's pretty important before you pick up a burger to eat it!).

I was completely disappointed by the burger - no one explained to me that it was not beef (I should note that the menu board was not working correctly, so perhaps if it had of been, I would have figured that out in advance?) - and so while I was eating it, I was trying to figure out why my hamburger had such a white-ish/pink-ish tinge to it. I only NOW understand that it was not beef after reading some of the other online reviews. I suspected it might have been pork, but how would I have known?

I was surprised to find that there is not an option to get cheese as a topping - but I did actually enjoy the sundried tomato and cream cheese spread. The bun was also quite nice. But I had a hard time enjoying the meal, considering my unclean hands, the mystery meat, and knowing the price we'd paid.

I won't be rushing back!

Weddings at the Berkeley Church

Hi Chrstinea - I have been seriously considering holding our wedding there next year - 2011. Your menu sounds IDEAL. I wasn't aware that there was an option of stations or BBQ. Berkeley has provided me with some cost estimates so far, but if you don't mind, would you be able to provide me some information or approximate costs that you incurred for this type of menu.
Thanks in advance!
