Dorado Tacos - excellent experience

to keep it simple..La Verdad is much better than Dorado.
Im not some person who needs everything to be "authentic" and puts my nose in the air when I have something inferior. but if you have ever had a really good Cemita you will be sadly disappointed in the ones served at Dorado...the fish tacos arent bad though. I will say thought that El Pelon's were better.

any worth while restaurants to check out???

nope those are the only 2....

Ramen for Pescatarians?

Ippudo has a vegetarian option if you ask for it. Also just because your bored with Momo. doesnt mean someone from out of town might not enjoy it

Formaggio Kitchen-Experiences Beyond Cheese?

Their homemade sausages are some of the best around..as are any other house made charcuterie and pates....their baked good are excellent as well..

Anniversary Suggestion Cool, Romantic, Columbus Circle UWS

not sure how "cool" it is..but the food, service and atmosphere at Marea on Central Park South just a block from Columbus Circle has been exceptional on 2 different visits.

Sunday Brunch

Cheesecake Factory!

Morimoto is crappy.

yeah except even though its not all that great its actually not as bad as you make it out to be. Over the top hyperbole is pretty useless

Park Avenue Autumn...meh

went in with low expectations last year when it was Park Avenue Winter aand my wife and I were actually very pleasantly surprised..no its not on par with the Per Se's , EMP's or other heavy hitters of the world but..its a beautiful room, with very good service and surprisingly very good food..we were fearful beacuse of the gimmicky concept but would recommend it to anyone thinking of giving it a shot

East Coast Grill - dinner report, 11/7/09

please..East Coast Grill is great neighborhood place doing a whole bunch of things right..the number of restaurants doing the job ECG has done for the length of time its been doing it are few and far between..to knock ECG in town like Boston/Cambridge where the number of good restaurants are scarce is silly...the OP sounds like they have an ax to grind

A Good Negroni -- why so difficult?

bartenders hate when people hand them drink recipes...its tacky, obnoxious and annoying. Ive never seen so much hand wringing over finding a Negroni, as much as I enjoy them, its fairly easy to tell where to order them and where not

The Reagle Beagle!

Ill try any place with the guts to name itself "The Reagle Beagle"..has to be the best name ever. Hopefully they will have a Mr Furley special

Anyone study at Cambridge School of Culinary Arts?

BU has a really strong certificate program as well...lots of top name chefs work with students as well as a really strong group of chefs who are part of the everyday program

New Chicken Place in Chelsea

That guy has been running back and forth making bagels and serving customers for ..well forever. He can sniff out people that arent regulars..and Im pretty confident he ..in his words "doesnt give a f- - - " if you dont like his attitude or you go to Rosenfelds..(which by the way are in no way better)

I used to own a place and employed around a dozen Guatemalans who loved Pollo Campero and used to make chicken in that style for themselves and other staff for lunch...and always talked about hoping one would open in Ma...this place is really for them..the chicken is juicy and has some nice flavor..(try to go around 2ish if you can..still a wait but you miss the lunch rush and beat the dinner rush we waited about 15 mins)but really its a piece of home for a ton of Latin workers and residents...

Chinatown recs for Chinese parents?

hands down ..especially if they enjoy seafood...

Oriental Garden
14 Elizabeth St., New York, NY 10013
nr. Bayard St.
212-619-0085

talk to the waiter about what you would like as some of the best items arent listed on the menu...they are very nice..and like talking about the different options the restaurant offers..its not the cheapest chinatown experience but for us any way consistently the best

ISO Basket Cheese for my Pizza Rustica

yeah..easy choice DiPalos..run over during the week when its not too crazy...dont wait until friday or saturday

12/10/08 Sofra, Cambridge Report

It's really a take out place...that would be an enormous space in a city like NY...just having the tables it has is a nice little bonus..
and its decorated tastefully...vibrant flavors doesnt mean it should have loud vibrant colors on the walls...I think she does a great job there one of the true jewels of the city

where to find a great bistecca alla fiorentina

not a true bistecca alla fiorentina since they dont use rosemary and garlic..but the steak for 2 at Babbo is excellent...as good if not better than a lot of the better know steakhouses

Prune, Sunday Brunch... how long is the wait? And other questions

You will never make a 2:45 flight if youre hitting Prune for Brunch at 10am..unless you really get right in..get quick service and rush out..that being said..Prune is so much better than Normas...

also Otto is a nice option for lunch..Its relaxed, un-hurried, lots of great wine..and a nice selection of antipasti to pick on...Lupa is much much better than Otto for dinner..but I think Otto is a perfect lunch spot.

Casa Mono you will love..

How can I make Mexican food as good as Frida Taqueria?

The notion that the food you had in L.A. was in someways more "authentic" than the food you have in NY is kind of silly. I have heard the arguments about there being no "authentic" Mexican food in NYC (like the Mexicans cooking in L.A. are more authentic than the ones cooking in NYC) ..but people think they , in their homes will cook better more authentic mexican food...I have travelled for business throughout the southwest, California, and even Mexico City..and yeah the food may be overall better in some establishments..(defintely not all of them)..Its in no way any more "authentic"..Its just prepared better at those restaurants, stands, etc..(again this isnt true of every Mexican place out west)..you can find all the ingredients you need here..just as some of the better places both up scale and mom and pop do..not every place in NYC makes Mexican food out of a can...

Which Of These 3 NYC Steak Houses Should I Pick?

Keens..it may be the best steak you will have in NY. (and the mutton chop is also out of this world) No frills..no real modern touches and as simple as it gets but everything is very good..and its a unique place..with an atmosphere that you will not find anywhere else...

Modern Pastry

the Modern has some great items outside of their canolis
the Paragina , Sfogliatella. Homemade Torrone, and Florentine's
are excellent as are the Lobster Tails which are also filled fresh..and are good for probably 3 people...Maria's is also very good...

Mikes has the reputation and the tourists..they make and freeze many of their items that stand up to it..which can lead to a not so fresh taste.

Porchetta at Buon Italia?

its really good actually..I've bought it there twice and both times it was very moist, really tasty with a nice blend of herbs and the skin was crispy..even when re-heated the next day

Buying jalapenos for canning

If you are pickling them just some good fresh peppers from either of your original spots (Super 88 or Russo's) will work fine. They are a food item that can be just as good this time of year (unlike say tomatoes) as in peak season when used for something like pickling.

Has Oleana lost it's luster?

We had dinner there a few weeks ago and the food and the service were both excellent. And still as good as they have always been. Nothing about the food has changed. Oleana is one of the truly , consistently good spots in the Boston area. So many so called "foodies" just love to eat their young.

Caffe Italia in Wakefield

you know they have a Cafe Italia in Marblehead that does a decent job..its not the greatest Italian you're going to find, but its not any different from the East Boston location (which was always just a good little place nothing special) in terms of food quality...worth checking out if you loved the Eastie spot so much

Amped-up upselling at Babbo?

I've eaten at Babbo at over a dozen times (last time being a week ago) and have never had the waiter try to upsell anything to me..in fact they almost always suggest splitting the pasta course between 2 people....Im not saying it didnt happen to you..but I have never experienced it

RUB or Blue Smoke?

RUB is not what its cracked up to be..Blue Smoke isnt bad. decent ribs..wider menu..much better than RUB
I would go with Hill Country especially if your BBQ tastes run more to Brisket and Beef offerings..they have some of the best anywhere...the pork is great too, but they really excel in the "Beef" (read - Texas) BBQ offerings

Going to Scarpetta this weekend, any suggestions?

you know we could have had an off night, but a recent dinner at Scarpetta was one of the most disapponting meals my wife and I have had in a long time.

The Spaghetti, tomato and basil was gummy, not at all flavorful and really insulting at $24.
There are pasta dishes all over town that are better and cheaper. At both high end and neighborhood places.
A Capretto (goat) entree was tough, chewy poorly cooked and arrived in the form of a well plated "goat-hash"
A Pork dish that was completely ill conceived had the flavor of a hot spiced apple cider with way too much spice and was served with Emilia-Romagna gnocci that couldnt have worked any less as a side for the pork...

I had high hopes, and have enjoyed Scottt Conants cooking at some of his previous stops but this was just a train wreck of a meal...hopefully we just hit it on a bad night.

Who has a good Mixed Grill?

Buenos Aires would fit the bill for you. great mixed grill
