Best Coffee in LA
Had a good cup of coffee at Sworks in Eagle Rock last week while visiting the area. Porto's isn't bad either. I am personally not a fan of Starbucks.
Catalina Island
Any suggestions for good restaurants there or on the way there from Los Angeles - maybe around the waterfront near the ferry? Planning to spend a day there. Thanks in advance
Catalina Island
Planning a day trip to Catalina Island. Are the any chow worthy places to eat there? I would also consider any restaurant near the ferry. Thanks again in advance.
Recommended places in LA
Will be visiting my son next week from NY. Any suggestions of good, new restaurants near Eagle Rock. The only food that we do not eat in Indian. He wanted to try Animal, The Edison and a sausage/bratworst place, that I can't remember the name of. Also, we always go to the Empress Pavillion for dim sum. Are there better places around. We enjoy Empress, but maybe a change would be nice. Thanks for you feedback.
Having breakfast on Long Island
We always go to Thomas' We love it there and never had the problems that you described. Actually, we were less impressed with Maureen's Kitchen- everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Glatt Kosher LI Wedding Halls?
While Crest Hollow, Woodbury Country club may have a kosher kitchen, I don't think they qualify as Glatt kosher, since they are open on Saturday. We did go to a wedding at Temple Israel in Lawrence and the food was fantastic- there was even veal chops as one of the choices and it was comparable to any fine restaurant.
Did you every hear of this?
They rounded up, so it was in their favor. When we were there the 1st time, the owner acted surprised and said they the problem would be corrected the next day.. when we went the 2nd time, a few days later- the problem was not fixed. Again, the owner acted surprised that their computer system was not fixed and they thought it was. Who are they kidding?
Did you every hear of this?
blackoak: The check actually said rounded. The waiter took the check to another station and that bill did not say rounded, but it was the same amount. How many people actually add up electronic checks, other than just to make sure what they ordered is on the bill?
fourrunder: Yes, they were nice enough to give us a round of drinks after we mentioned the rounding. However, how many people actually noticed what we did? It is pennies- but it can add up across the board if it was done every where. It was the principal of the thing. Why not round down in the customer's favor?
Did you every hear of this?
I went to a new restaurant for the first time and when we got the computerized check, we noticed that the bill was rounded up to the nearest nickel. I never saw this before and we spoke to the owner who had no clue that this was done on the restaurant checks. It was only a few pennies, but can you imagine the extra money the place is making? Also is this legal? The owner apologized and offered us a round of drinks the next time and said the problem will be orrected. We went back and got our drinks, but lo and behold, the rounding problem was never corrected and we pointed it out to the owner again. she acted surprise, which now i really believe is an act. I was just wondering if anyone ever had this happen to them.
Nassau County Italian with Good Ambiance, Food & Prices?
Went to Spumante for a party an found the food to be disappointing and the owner had an attitude- like he did not want to be there. Maybe it is better in the dinning room. We like LaViola in Cedarhurst (family style), La Novela in East Meadow and Ginos in the Plaindege shopping center on Hempstead Tpk.
Where would you go?
I have a gift certificate for $300.00 for either Bond 45, Brooklyn Diner,Redeye Grill, Trattoria Del'Arte, Shellys, and Cafe Fiorello. I am planning to go to dinner after a Broadway show- where would you go and why? Thanks for your suggestions. I know I may be dreaming- but if I have any money left over, who has a good brunch?
Lunch at the Modern
I was lucky enough to be laken out to lunch by my son who is visiting from California. We has the most amazing lunch. We both ordered courses from the pre fix menu. We both started off with the crab chowder. It was full of crab and vegetables and I would have been very happy having a large bowl of it for my meal. Compliments of the chef, we were served a acorn squash mouse served in a pommergranate sauce. My son ordered the skate and we shared it. Also full of flavor - crispy and in a foam sauce. I had the tuna steak, which was cooked rare, served with baby white mushrooms. He had the lamb steak that came with a cauliflower terrain and roasted carrots. For dessert, we both had the coconut ice cream with candied walnuts, tapioca, served on a shortbread. Assorted candies were also bought to the table. All food was not only a work of art but full of flavor. Service was excellent. It took us 2 hours to eat lunch, but it was worth the time and money. I totally recommend the restaurant
Help! Need to pick restaurant for anniversary dinner!
Panama Hatties in Huntington on Jericho Tpk. The have come down in price and there are 3-5 course menus you can choose from. We always enjoyed this place- continental food great service and atmosphere.
Great Takeout near Bethpage, LI
Zorns for chicken- fried/roasted, ribs, chicken soup, apple pie, etc.- Located on Hempstead Tpk by the Seaford Oyster Bay. Green Tea for Chinese food on 107 is also good for take out- it is on the west side in a shopping center. I totally agree with jpf about the Orient and how they treat non-Asisans. I have written about it previously on Chowhound
Western Carib cruise
We took a similiar cruise 3 years ago. Unless Roatan is more developed- there is nothing there. We went to Tabayanna Beach there and they have a BBQ buffet- nothing to write home about. We didn't have time to try any restaurants in Beliz- but it is an English speaking country. In Cozumel. we had lunch at a Mexican restaurant- don't remember the name- it was crowded, touristy, but again, nothing to write home about. The Mexican food is different there (especially the cheese) than what we are used to in the states. At least we didn't get sick :)
Fortune Asian Bistro in Westbury, L.I.?
Yes, PF Changs is still in the Source Mall- the new restaurant is across the street.
Italian bakeries in southern california?
I don't think this is an Italian bakery-I think it is Cuban- but every time we go visit my son in Glendale, we go to Portos- for pastries and to eat breakfast. The place is amazing and if you need a decorated cake for a party- they do a wonderful job.
La Panchita-Levittown
Please say it isn't so- but did La Panchita go out of business- We passed by there the other night and it was dark and a sign was in the window, which I could not make out from the tpke.
thanks for any info
Long Island dim sum
funny-I had just the opposite experience at the Orient. One time we went there for dim, most of the restaurant was a booked party with only 2 free tables. We did not realize this until we sat down and everyone was getting served first but us. We had to ask for the complementary appetizer and plum soup being served on another occasion, but noticed Asians were being served it as soon as they sat down. Maybe they felt Westerners would not like it, but at least ask. Another time we had reservations for a party of six and the table they gave us was right in front of the door. Other tables were available and asked for a back table and only got it after saying we are going to leave. Just be careful and observant when you go there. They had their 3 strikes with me. At Fortune wheel- ask for Francis- he will take good care of you.
Steak &/or Seafood on Long Island
Some suggestions are:
Frank's Steakhouse in Jericho
Major's in Woodbury- probably the most reasonable
Blackstones and Rothman's are pricey- but may fit your budget without a liquor bill or dessert
IF you can do lunch, some places have excellent specials
Brunch near Jericho, Long Island.
If you decide on Fortune Wheel- they do take reservations and they do honor them. It is a fun place and you do not have to order dim sum or you can order both. BK Sweeny's in Bethpage has a sit down brunch. It is a bar/restaurant, but child friendly.
Johns Farms .........Plainview
Or tthe Shop Rite on Woodbury Rd- both are owned by the Greenfield family.
Johns Farms .........Plainview
I have been to John's farms many times. It's okay- but I would not compare it to Fairway which has a much larger selection in foods- such as organic produce and grocery items. Be careful when shopping at Johns- the shelf life of their vegetables is much shorter than other groceries- so plan on using your fruits and vegetables within 2 days. i have heard this from other people. Their bananas turned rotten in a day and they were beautiful when I purchased them. Their meat is very inconsistent- can be very tough and chewy or very good. I bought their "prime" skirt steak which was at an unbelievable price, which was horrible - no way it was prime met. Remember-you get what you pay for. Also- if you can't stand crowds- don't go. They only take cash and checks- no credit cards/debit cards. There is an ATM on the premise if you want to pay a service charge-and bring a quarter for the shopping cart, which is refundable.
30th Birthday Dinner - LI
My son will be celebrating his 30th birthday over Thanksgiving weekend. He is coming in from LA and requested a trendy place for his special dinner. Anyone know of any upscale Manhattan type restaurants in Nassau County or Western Suffolk that may fit the bill. I was thinking of Four Food Studio in Melville, Cafe Buenas Aires in Huntington. We were also thinking of Nisen in Woodbury. Please help with any feedback. Thanks
Tikki restaurants on Long Island
Does anyone know of a good Tikki restaurant to celebrate a 30th birthday party for my son who is coming in from California? this is a request from him. The crowd is diverse- ranging from 24-88 years old. I was thinking of Honu Kitchen in Huntington. Even a retro '60's style restaurant would fit the bill. Thanks for your help
Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)
What a fun thread! My mom always made the same meals- roast beef with baked potato and string beans, fish and spaghetti, pork chops and applesauce. She also made a canned salmon loaf. My dad used to like liverworst and mash it on white bread. Mom also made a Watergate cake - I think it had pastachio pudding in it. MIL made the spaghetti and ketchup dish with butter.
Food souvenirs from Alaska
A nice gift would be the ulu knife with a cutting board. I use mine all the time which I bought back from Alaska. They come in all price ranges and sizes.
New Paltz area recommendations
We're going to the New Paltz Fair this weekend. Any recommendations for lunch and dinner? Anything but Indian food-hubby won't eat it. Thanks in advance

Island Park/Oceanside Area
We went to Mitchell's on Long Beach Rd. for lunch. I've been to the one in Valley Stream growing up and was hoping for the same positive experience. However, it was a big disappointment. I had grilled vegetables over pita- it wasn't grilled- but saute- full of grease. My husband had grilled cheese- very skimpy, one friend had a turkey burger- or should I say - hockey puck and another had a chicken wrap with 3 tiny pieces of chicken. Service was very slow and decided not to take a chance on dessert, even though they are know for their ice cream.
The way service was we might have been there for dinner! BTW0- the smallest sundae was just under $6.00. ( 2 scoops and topping)
