Gabrielle Hamilton's Minestrone Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

How come people are so quick to criticize a recipe they've not actually tried? I made this. It was great! Cooking the veges for the recommended time does not result in mush, rather it helps to flavor the broth and deepen the flavors of the soup. And the oil, while it may seem excessive on paper, it does not result in an oily soup, because the veges absorb a lot of it. Also, you don't have to plop exactly 1 cup of oil in the pot all at once. You can do it to taste. If you find you don't need more oil, don't add any more.

Curried Cauliflower, Chickpeas, and Tofu

This was really tasty. The tofu is a healthier alternative to paneer. I will make this again.

The Lady Prefers Couscous

Yes. I should have mentioned okra as the alternate name.

Pistachio Mexican Wedding Cakes

Can someone who made them tell me if this is right. I just made it and the dough when mixed was pretty crumbly and but still formed into balls in my fist. And then when I baked it, the little balls came out more like a cookie, not a cakey at all. Did I mess up?

Orecchiette with Pistachios

I made this last night and it was delicious. I ground up the pistachios to a finer consistency than the rough chop recommended in this recipe, but I made sure to leave a few chunks of pistachios in the sauce. Also, I sprinkled a bit of crushed red peppers on top. The sauce came out tasting subtly sweet, creamy, with just a hint of heat. I served the pasta dish with prosciutto and melon on the side.

Grilled Vegetable Sandwich with Egg Salad and Bacon

I made this for lunch today. It was a big hit. One change I made: I chopped the scallions finely and added them directly to the egg salad gribiche. After the sandwiches were made, I had some egg salad left over and it tasted good just by itself. I used the left overs for a side dish at dinner.

This was amazing. One of my favorite brunch dishes to make. I add in some spicy sausage, too.

Mock Potato Salad

I love this recipe with good ol' spuds, even though that's not part of the zone diet. I tried it with kohlrabi and even after cooking the vegetable was really fibrous at parts. It was very hard to cut, too. The taste was okay, but not anywhere near as good as when I made it with potatoes.

Chicken Basquaise

Made it last night. Spicy, delicious, and heavenly. It also looks beautiful served, as the sauce is a deep red color. I will definitely be making this again.

Linguine with Clams and Chorizo

One of my favorite dishes while living in italy was Spaghetti Vongole, which is a fresh and light pasta with clams, fresh parsley, plum tomatoes and garlic. I tried this recipe by adding in chorizo and vodka. It definitely makes it a more heavier dish than when made just with clams. But I love the depth of flavor the vodka adds. All in all, I'd definitely make this again.

Financiers

I made these last night. They were gone in less than 20 minutes. Very moist and seriously scrumptious. Next time I'll triple the recipe, since they're bite sized and move quickly!

Seeking hidden gem or little known food stores/specialty stores?

Schaller & Weber (German Grocery Store)
1654 2nd Avenue
New York, NY 10028-3197

This store is located in what used to be NYC's Germantown. Great sausages and preserved fruits. Pretty cheap for a specialty grocery store.
