Anyone know if Omshivam in Haworth is closed?

Yes - it is closed. They also own a convenience store and according to those I spoke with there, they just couldn't juggle the two businesses at this time.

Zeytinia store in Englewood is closing

Koreans must be hiding. Haven't seen one since GL opened. Was in yesterday out of curiosity and all were speaking Turkish. Decided to try a red velvet cupcake and the employee took a phone call while I was ordering, and she turned around and spoke in Turkish. Two other employees standing nearby never offered to help so I walked out. The place looks terrible, too. When it first opened, it wasn't that bad, but they've done some renovating and it is just plain ugly and dark.

Zeytinia store in Englewood is closing

Green Lime, which is identical to Zeytinia, is now in the Palisade Avenue, Englewood location. It opened a little over a week ago. Same cashiers, deli people.

Limon, Main St., Hackensack, is empty.

Hurricane House, Barnegat NJ

I cannot believe The Hurricane House is still there. I dated a guy whose parents lived in Forked River. This was 1982-1990. I loved HH. Simple meals, and the prices were great. I bought an antique rocking chair at a place nearby that I still have (paid $15 for it). I'll have to try and get down there with my hubby (not the guy I dated).

Best cupcakes in NJ?

Mr. Cupcakes opened a new location on Kindermack Road in Oradell. Maybe I'm being a little narrow-minded when it comes to icing, but I like it to look like traditional cupcake, or decorated to look like flower petals, etc. These looked like they had been iced with a Dairy Queen soft-serve dispenser, a squished tubular S sloppily splayed across the tops of the cakes. I decided to get two minis, just to try them, one coconut and the other red velvet. They were dry. The red velvet was white cake so not the deep red velvet seen in other shops. The cream cheese icing tasted more like straight cream cheese. The coconut cupcake was simply white cake, white icing and coconut sprinkled on top - not a lot of coconut flavor.

There is a Mr. Cupcakes in Riverside Square Mall and in Clifton.

Rosa's - Emerson, NJ - Bad experience

Passed this pizzeria/dining room a few times and then got a coupon in Clipper, had MD appt near there so met husband for dinner afterwards.

The dining room looked closed but an older man (manager/owner?) assured us it was opened. We walked into a big room with lots of tables, several of which had crumbs on them. We hesitated, the traffic was horrific, we were hungry, so we sat down. The manager called our server to help us several times before he actually responded.

Server (young kid, inexperienced) and the manager were confused by the stainless steel water bottle my husband had brought in with him. It was a source of confusion a few times during the evening.

We got menus, drinks, and then the server disappeared for a long time. We waited for bread. Just as we were getting ready to go to the kitchen to get him, he came out apologizing that he forgot about it. He took our orders, and 1/2 hour later came out to confirm what we ordered. There was a mix-up, my fault because I asked for tortellina alla rosa and the actual dish is alla casa, but no one noticed this for 1/2 hour. It took another 20 minutes or so to bring out my side salad, which was actually good. The tortellini ($15) and H's lasagna ($13) came out another 15 minutes later. He left all the dishes on the table.

The portions were large, but the lasagna was very salty, and blanketed with bland, oily mozzarella cheese. My tortellinis were overcooked, and the cream sauce seemed to the half-and-half poured on as an afterthought. It was thinned by the draining soggy tortellini. The shiitake mushrooms had some bite to them, as did the asparagus. The proscuitto was thick and tasteless.

We then waited for anyone to come out and see how things were. The manager came out and said "mangia", and then asked about the water bottle. Our server came out, having slathered on cologne in the meantime, and clumsily took our dinners away. He left behind the bread plates and salad plate.

We asked for the check, and handed him the coupon. The check came out 10 minutes later, the math entirely wrong, and the coupon not deducted. He couldn't figure it out, yet the manager never seemed to notice this or any of the other shoddy service we received. He finally went into the pizzeria and we could hear someone explaining how to do to the check. When we received our check, our waiter then asked us if we wanted dessert or anything. We declined, paid up walked out through the pizzeria, where the manager and our server were standing, neither of whom looked up or said thank you or even good night.

In this economy, how does this happen?

The Wisdom of Young Farmers: Khaiti Khaleck

Was it a difficult choice to switch from vegan to nonvegan? I ask because I was involved with Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of farm animals. They do great work to pass laws that ban cruel industrial farm practices, but their insistence that everyone be vegan started getting really annoying. Do you have the issues that they say all animal farmers have, i.e. what to do with male goats, calves (take away from their mom's early and sell for meat)? I was never sure how much FS exaggerated. I love goats and would love to have a pair, but town ordinances prohibit. I think what you're doing is great, too!I

I had a really good piece of cheesecake at Andy's Corner in Hawthorne. Dense but not too heavy.

Best Produce in Bergen County

Bumping this up. Tenafly Gourmet is condemned as roof collapsed and walls are buckling. I JUST started shopping there!

A new Farmer's Market store is coming to River Edge or Oradell (there was a produce store at this location but it closed). Saw it on a trip out to a Taste of Greece a few nights ago. Will check it and the new cupcake store out in a couple weeks after they open.

Cafe Capri in Hillsdale appears to be closed

It looked dark a few weeks ago on a weeknight, but it was closed on Friday, which could have been due to the storm.

Their sign for the Pasta Special running M-R is no longer up. We did the pasta special and it was kind of funny. Food wasn't bad. All pastas are $9.95, but they don't give you the dinner salad with it, so it's not really a special, they just take away the salad and charge less.

Zeytinia store in Englewood is closing

When I lived near Maywood Marketplace, I went there often, but had to be very careful with dates on prepared food, cheese and breads. Also, they weren't consistent. Some of the stuff looked great but was so loaded with salt or balsamic as to be inedible.

Haven't been back to Limon, but it was identical to Zeytinia.

BTW, NY Labor Board found Z guilty of not paying OT to employees after their representative union sued. They ended up paying out about 1.5 million last year.

Market In The Middle - Appears to be CLOSED

I was wondering about this! I was in AP just after the holidays and noticed it looked empty, was going to drive around the block and come around for a closer look but never did. I didn't like MIM. The service was so bad the first time that we got up and left, and the second time the service was slightly better, but the food was mediocre - and this was shortly after they opened.

I've had some good times and good crabcakes at BW, excellent service, and really good beers. It looks like development has come to a screeching halt in AP with million-$ condos purchased by only a few. AP was almost on its way back. A shame this economy will set it back again. Which means businesses have to pay attention to service, too.

Zeytinia store in Englewood is closing

The Oakland store was dirty from the beginning, empty, and the hot and cold buffet really dicey. I picked up some nice kale and other greens perhaps twice but even the produce department went down hill.

There is a store called Limon in Hackensack on Main Street, which looked exactly like a Zeytinia. I wonder how they're doing. It seemed expensive for Hacky.
