Steakhouse Dilemna!

We went to the Strip House Midtown and is was very, very good. My friend and significant other has a porterhouse, DW had the 20oz bone in rib steak and I had the dry aged rib steak and they all were stellar. The creamed spinach and ripped potatoes were very good as was the wine we ordered.

The pescetarian liked the sea bass but did not think it was great.

The appetizers were generally good. I had oysters which were nice but I have had better. My friend thought the crab cakes were excellent. My wife's tuna tartar was good but under-flavored. The scallops were well received.

Service was top notch and everyone in our party enjoyed the burlesque theme and decor.

Steakhouse Dilemna!

That good, huh? :-)

I keyed on the Strip House because it seems that they pay attention to everything not just steaks.

I have dived deep into steak house write-ups and reviews in the past 48 hours and it seems that steak ageing is approaching fetish proportions.

Steakhouse Dilemna!

Strip House is a small chain but not the behemoth that is Mortons. I am surprised exactly how many steak houses are part of a chain of one size or another.

Thanks everyone.

Steakhouse Dilemna!

Regarding the Sea Fire Grill, I think we want to stick to someplace with more of a steakhouse feel to it.

Morton's was a thought.

Steakhouse Dilemna!

Hi,

I know steakhouse discussions have been beaten to death, but here is my situation:

I am planning for 5 diners, one of whom is from Italy and wants a New York Steakhouse experience, while another does avoids meat and generally has fish.

We want to stay in the central midtown area and these are the choices I have available:

Strip House - great sides, does fish well but only one cut of steak they serve is dry aged but in general the steaks have reviewed well
Del Friscos - good steak, attractive New York setting
Benjamin - excellent steaks - Lugar Style but the fish and sides reviews spotty
Wolgangs 41st ST - again Lugar style - some stellar reviews others eh.

Keens is not available and I don't want to venture too far out of the midtown area for various logistical reasons.

I am leaning towards the Strip House because it seems as if it is the closest to fitting the bill and delivers on things other than the steak.

Your thoughts and feedback are appreciated!

Recommendations in Sullivan County and Hudson Valley

I would check out Culinary Creations in Pine Bush. This is right on the borders of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster County. http://www.culinarycreationscafe.com. It is a small place that serves beer and wine only and the menu varies quite a bit.

A VERY belated synopsis of my dining experience in Barcelona

It was a little place located on the north side of the Cathedral. I forgot the name but they fried up the churros fresh.

A VERY belated synopsis of my dining experience in Barcelona

She loved the jamon, the razor clams (but she prefers the hard shell clams we get at home) and the churros and chocolate.

Oh yeah those pics are from Kiosko Universal.

A VERY belated synopsis of my dining experience in Barcelona

Hey Aleta! I've missed you! :-)

The first picture is a stack of wild mushrooms, a bunch of which made it into the sauteed mushrooms with eggs in the second picture. You can also see the razor clams and my daughter's jamon bocadillo.

A VERY belated synopsis of my dining experience in Barcelona

Sorry it has taken me so long to write about my experiences in Barcelona (I returned August 7th) but here are some quick comments

Restautant Bo-

Fantastic Seafood and Jamon Croquettas. They were a touch oily but out of the 4 places we had croquettas these had the most flavor. We also had stellar gambas in oil and garlic

Ceverseria Catalana -
Perfectly competent, if not memorable fare. What did stand out was a Jamon and Date bocadillo that was simply fantastic

Bodegueta
- Great anchovies and a nice platter of jamon all washed down with some rose cava. I loved it here because it was a no B.S. establishment with character. If you are in the area I would try to go there.

Pinotxo in the Boqueria -

There may be a lot of hype behind this place, but it was fun and the chickpeas with morcilla was incredible.

Sureny in Gracia -

The marinated Ahi tuna and the foie with mango were excellent. We had a sea bass with lemon sorbet that was just too sweet. I forgot what else we had but I would go back because the wine and service was excellent and the restaurant is located in the charming Plaça Revolució De Setembre De 1868

Sagardi - Went into there Born location for a late afternoon snack and the pintxos were tasty but not earth-shattering

Paco Meralgo - To put it bluntly this place is over-rated. Not that the food wasn't good but I was expecting to be wowed. The only truly outstanding things we had was the Pan amb Tomaquet and the gazpacho. We had sea snails, cockles, razor clams and oysters. They were all very good (except the oyster) but I was expected seafood fireworks but it wasn't the case.

Kiosko Universal - GREAT razor clams and outstanding wild mushrooms with eggs (I will post some pictures later). The razor clams here made Paco Meralgo all the more disappointing.

Also, we visited Tibidabo Fun Fair, and believe it or not we got some pasta from a concession stand and it was really good. Cooked al dente and lightly coated with a nice tomatoe sauce. Many so-called Italian restaurants could learn a thing or two from this.

I will post more comments later.

How's my Barcelona food itinerary looking?

Yeah I am back, but I am trying to catch up at work. I will be posting soon.

How's my Barcelona food itinerary looking?

We had breakfast at Kiosko Universal in the Boqueria and it was great.

I had Grilled razor claims that were superior to those at Paco Meralgo and my wife had wild mushrooms and eggs which was also fantastic.

What are the top five Spanish foods?

Personally I think Spain's greatest cheese is Cabrales.

Barcelona dining report

Thanks for the reviews!

I have reservations at Paco Meralgo and Gresca. Aleta from this board just went to Gresca and was floored how good it was.

Someone just recently panned Paco Meralgo so I guess it is the luck of the draw.

Did you chose the degustation at Gresca? What was mediocre about it.

Thanks again!

jamonisimo--an exercise in frustration

This operation sounds like it has issues to say the least. Do they have no competitors that they can be this flippant with their clientele?

Jamon in the Boqueria

Snackhappy,

have you been to the Concepción market in Eixample? It is only 10 minutes from where we are staying.

Quimet Y Quimet?

Are there any other places in Barcelona that would give a similar culinary experience?

I am referring to the food, not necessarily the ambience.

Thanks in advance

Coming to Barcelona for 3 days - which restaurants should I go to ?

Anasuya,

I would have gone to Paco Meralgo specifically for the oysters, razor claims etc!

:-)

Santa Maria is very high on my list.

Thanks Anasuya!

That is the second recent poor review of Paco Meralgo that I have read.

I was thinking to myself that if I went to Paco Meralgo that maybe I should go on a night other that a Sunday because of all the blurbs saying that this is a great place for Sunday dinner because it is open on Sundays.

There is an industry axiom that you should avoid seafood on Mondays. Perhaps that should apply to Sunday nights also.

Santa Maria is high up on my list!!

Walking Food Tours in Barcelona

I am staying in Eixample because I thought that would be easier with a 12 year old in tow, plus triples are not the easiest places to find in top locations (HCC Montsant is in the Born for example).

Taller de Tapas in Barcelona

Problem is that we are staying in Eixample near La Padrera so Cerveseria Catalana is more convenient. CC has non-deep fried seafood (Razor Clams a la plancha etc).

Aleta,

I read that review a while ago and he seems to be in the minority. One thing I have learned about innovative fare is that sometimes it can go wrong and even if it doesn't it could rub people the wrong way.

I figured Cerveseria Catalana would be a good place for our dinner the first night we are in Barcelona. For a jet-lagged family it seems to be lively enough to keep us awake and user-friendly enough not to befuddle us!
