Denver Dining/LodgingRecommendations July 27-29 for Anniversary

Hello all. My wife and I will be in Denver this July for a short trip. I have only passed through and she has never been. We are looking for some advice on both restaurants, and a nice downtown hotel (heard good things about the Embassy Suites?). As for the dining we are versatile...fancy/laid back, expensive/cheap eats....doesn't matter. We will have time for 1 "nice" dinner, 1 quick dinner before Red Rocks, and a few lunches/brunches. We both enjoy cooking and eating wonderful food. Something local or unique to the area would be a huge plus. Think Colorado Lamb, local Rainbow Trout, etc. As for the hotel, we would prefer the $100-$200 range. LoDo sounds nice, but suggest away please! Thanks in advance for the help.

Best Mexican Food [Detroit Area]

We just dined at El Barzon the other night. It was absolutely fantastic. Much more authentic then mexicantown. There was a special rellenos that had a pork/fruit filling and was covered with a pecan cream sauce and pomegranate seeds. Amazing! Great margaritas as well.

Where to buy wood to burn in brick oven - preferably Oakland Co location? [DTW]

Gander Mountain usually has several (cherry, apple, hickory, pecan) varieties. Also check the This Is It shop on orchard lake. I purchase accesories for my Big Green Egg there and they carry several different types of wood. STAY AWAY FROM PALLETS!

Have time for only 1 Po boy today! Help quickly please !!

First of all thanks for all the great suggestions, I found myself half hoping for a cancelled flight so I could try them all! ;)
I ended up with a Surf and Turf from Parkway. This being only my 2nd New Orleans po boy (Johnnys) I can't claim to be an expert, but I cannot imagine a better sandwich. The perfectly fried shrimp somehow manage to stay crispy (I did eat quickly) even though they are covered in a really solid beef gravy. I got mine dressed with a seasonal Abita. Perfect meal, especially for $12.75. Top 3 sandwich ever for me!!!

Have time for only 1 Po boy today! Help quickly please !!

I am on my way back to NOLA to fly home. I want to get one last po boy (Johnny's was ok). Parkway, Crabby Jacks, and Shortstops have all been recommended to me. Where should I go for the BEST? I prefer shrimp/oysters/crawfish/and or roast beef as toppings. CAN'T WAIT!!!

2 Nights in NO. What MUST we do/try/tase??

Hello all. Coming into town August 10th-12th. Just a quick visit prior to a business meeting in Biloxi. I will have my wife with me and we would LOVE some local suggestions. We are staying at The Dauphine in the FQ. I have made Friday night reservations at Cochon as I have always wanted to eat there. Thought Saturday brunch at Commanders might be great also. LMK your thoughts. Also please tell me the BEST place nearby to eat my weight in crawfish (nice and spicy!). A great classic cocktail joint would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

URGENT! Craving authentic Japanese dinner TONIGHT! [Detroit Area]

Well we ended up at Sharaku only as my wife really wanted to go to the movies and doing all 3 (Hanzo) wouldn't have been possible. We were more then happy! Started with the fried oysters which were so plump and fresh....big difference from the limp, dry, sad little things most places serve. We kept it very simple and each got the sushi (in between deluxe and omakase), forgive me for not remembering the name of the selection. Had uni, toro, salmon roe, yellowfin, bonito, king crab, shrimp, sea bass, salmon belly and an amazing salmon roll in the bento box. All were the best i've had this side of NYC. My wife had never had toro, so I was excited for her to try it. Did NOT dissapoint. "I didn't know fish could be that buttery" was her reply. All in all a great meal. About a $100 with one drink each. We will be back. Thanks VTB for the info.

Quality Dry Aged Beef in metro Detroit??!!??

I also ordered an entire rib section to be aged at Fairway. It is currently at 15 days, and I cannot wait!! The pricing really varies as you can choose from several diferent quality levels (Prime, Piedmontese, Kobe levels 4-9), and many different cuts. I went with the level 6 Kobe. As compared to buying the same product online I did VERY well for myself. Plus I dig the weekly updates as well....food nerd-ery at its finest.

Hello all. I live in the Novi area, and would like to have a source for dry aged beef (preferably 2.5 inch bone in 60 day ribeyes!!!). Hoping the new Joes butcher show at the old Byrds location may carry them. Anyone have a good source?

Panache 447 Plymouth-Needs sooooooooooo much work [DTW]

I am going to temper this review as much as possible, understanding that this is a new establishment. Also let me say up front that the waitresses were wonderful. The main issue we had (on a slow evening) was getting a drink actually brought to the table. It was a solid 15-20 minutes after ordering until our cocktails arrived....we were only a group of 3. When they did arrive they were subpar at best. Great recipes on the drink menu but the bartender could not execute at all (ie: my "forest ave" was to have muddled jalapeno....he didn't muddle just threw a few pieces in). I also ordered a few items to take home....wished I hadn't. Nothing "tasted bad" persay...just not up to the standards one would expect for the price. My duck quesedillas (a favorite typically) looked like something frozen and reheated at a high school cafeteria. The Panache roll was so loosely and unevenly rolled that it was falling apart before I even left to go home. 6 cocktails and 2 appetizers = $96 with tip. I would expect MUCH better for this price range. This being said there are some positives: the waitresses were doing an admirable job trying to cover for the terrible bartender. The menu (both cocktail and food) shows some real promise. Great ideas and blending of flavors. It's as if they took a paired down fine dining menu and are attempting to have it prepared by a coney island line cook. It's all in the execution and the details. I hope someone such as a manager or owner read this. Could be a wonderful addition.....but a LOT of work needs to be done.

Antica Pizzeria Fellini - Suburban Detroit

Well we eventually made it here....Saturday night. We had the Sofia with arugula, procuitto, and cherry tomatoes. In a word....amazing. Crust was superb. Just the right amount of salt, and chew. Good fresh toppings applied liberally but not over done. They do not yet have a liquor license but the woman next to us heard me order wine and gave me a glass out of her bottle (they allow BYOB). So nice!! All in all....maybe the best pizza in Michigan...certainly in the running.

In the mood for GREAT italian. Bacco or Giovannis???!!!?? [DTW]

Ok, so here is my short review: Went to Giovannis (couldn't get a table at the Olive Garden) this Saturday night. Packed house but we were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time. First thing that my wife mentioned was that EVERYONE was so nice and polite. We started with the calamari which may have been the best I've ever had. Super tender and perfectly fried, with a wonderful lemon, caper burre blanc. Both went with the house salad. Very fresh greens and a wonderful house dressing (sort of a honey, basalmic, creamy italian thing). Wife got the perch which was overpowered by the lemon sauce but again very well prepared. I had the Brachiole (sp?) which was wonderful. Super light and airy tiramisu for dessert with the 23yr old Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve bourbon. Very rare find.
All in all a great night out. Met the owner, chatted with half the staff, and generally had a wonderful time. Food was very good if not life-changing. Just perfectly executed classics that take you back in time a bit. We will be back for sure. Thank you all for your comments. Where next??
