KIMCHI FUNK
Thanks alwaystired, do you know when you are buying fresh Kimchi, do you get to choose fresh or aged, or how can you tell?
KIMCHI FUNK
Bought my first Kimchi in the quart size jar, and was hooked. I characterize it as kind of a spicy sauerkraut. I went to Hmart for the first time, and I bought the industrial size jar, the kind that makes you remove a shelf from the fridge to accommodate it.
This Kimchi has none of the vinegary tang, or any fermented funk that my first jar had. As it is now refrigerated, is there any chance these tastes will develop, or did I get a bad brand, and are there differences in "Strength",(not spiceiness) from brand to brand?
What brand of Kimchi would you recommend?

Breakfast in Arcadia
Go to LeRoy's while you still can. These oldschool places are worth going to, if only to benchmark what a diner was. Of the options in this thread, it is the only place I would eat at. Too bad they only serve bisquits and gravy on Tuesday and Thursday. Many times the B&G has happily eased me into a food coma(sometimes at work). Good Luck this weekend PS, I assume you are cooking. edit: I saw the blog, OK, judging.
Thai in Orange County
Is not Renu Nakorn still in favor? Issan, not as close as TN, both not too far from HB. How close do you need?
Country Hams via Costco?
Thats really what I was wondering, if it does not require the soaking etc., is it truly a country style ham, as I think of it? I have never had one, because of expense and availability. But I remember a "Good Eats" episode about Ham Which went through the laborious process to prepare a C.S. ham for usage. Perhaps this ham does require that preparation, but they don't want to scare buyers off before purchase. I hope someone with much C.S. ham experience sees this and can comment definatively.
Country Hams via Costco?
13lb. Johnston country style ham for $50 shipped. This seems cheap for this type of ham. Has anyone had experience with one of these? http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11480045&whse=BC&topnav=&cm_sp=RichRelevance-_-itempageVerticalRight-_-PopularProductsInCategory&cm_vc=itempageVerticalRight|PopularProductsInCategory

Xmas Tamales!
Looking for great tamales for Xmas eve, maybe Eastern SGV or Western IE. La Indiana or La Mascota used to be my go to's, but too far away now. Costco was not good enough, and Cardenas Market sold ones that were not fit for guests. I can not believe there no tamalarias in the Pomona area. TIA
Vietnamese Pancakes (Banh Xeo) & Fried Bread for Pho
Banh Xeo is excellent at Vietnam House in San Gabriel, with the equally excellent Egg Rolls, both come with very extensive accompaniments such as herb and lettuce plates and various sauces. We always order both of these dishes, and the entire table is covered with plates. I'm now drooling.
DUNGENESS CRAB SEASON OPENS TODAY!
Those were probably(hopefully) from Alaska or Canada. It sounds as if they travelled well, I hope you enjoyed them.
DUNGENESS CRAB SEASON OPENS TODAY!
Last year was the largest California harvest ever, but I did not notice an abundance of Dungeys or cheaper prices, at least at the Asian markets I frequent. Where will the first fresh crabs show up, and will they be priced reasonably? Please post when you find fresh Dungeness crabs, and please note if they were lively and well "filled out" (good meat to shell ratio), and of course how much they cost.
I E SUPERMARKETS : THERE'S A NEW KING IN TOWN!
Well, as I said earlier, having a good source of Middle Eastern groceries at cheap prices was an initial draw for me. But once inside, the market is very nice, and I kept finding things that appeal to the houndish side.
I read all the local market flyers, and I don't remember other markets selling choice grade boneless New York steaks at $3.69/lb., or skirt steak for $2.79/lb., or beautiful farm raised Salmon fillets at $3.99/lb,Or Mortadella with pistachios for $3.69/lb.sliced. I know these are killer prices for usually expensive stuff I can't normally afford. I have not found Aleppo Pepper or Smoked Paprika in my local markets, but was pleasently suprised to find them at SK.
I appreciate that you are happy for me, but I am sorry you don't share the enthusiasm. I am going back in a few minutes to take advantage of some one-day sale items, such as Foster Farms Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, sliced for $1.69/lb, or Crown royal Whiskey at $12.99 per 750ml.
As I am somewhat new to the area, do you know of some good and affordable food stores that you consider unusual or unique?
Soujouk Sausage ?
My new favorite market had a few varieties of soujouk sausages prominently displayed on the deli counter. These are dried sausage, like a pepperoni, with a very peculiar shape.
I am going to try one, but I don't know how to choose or how to use them. Could some of our more worldly Hounds please give me some advice? Thanks in advance!
I E SUPERMARKETS : THERE'S A NEW KING IN TOWN!
While these may be valid concerns, I believe they source their product from the same suppliers as all the major markets. I doubt they are getting meat and produce smuggled into this country on the backs of mules across the Sonoran desert in Arizona! And if they were, I'm sure we would all be flocking there to get some delicacy we read about on an obscure banned foodie blog.
All of the markets that I go to have good meats, fish and produce, and you must use regular prudence when choosing which items you wish to put into your body. This holds true for any market or vendor. Super King market seems to have a good reputation amongst Chowhounders, that was why I was so excited to get them close to me.
I E SUPERMARKETS : THERE'S A NEW KING IN TOWN!
That's Super King Market in Claremont. Soft opening was on Friday, Nov. 4, grand opening is scheduled for 11-11-11. Many on this board are familiar with their other 3 stores. I was eagerly anticipating the opening of this store, mainly hoping for an affordable source of lamb and Middle Eastern groceries.
We visited on Saturday evening and it was insanely crowded, mostly fueled by grand opening specials. This is a palace of supermarkets for our area, I would liken it to a Whole Foods for frugal(cheapass!) shoppers such as myself. At least now, during the opening, the entire store was pimped out and absolutely beautiful, stocked to the gills and shiny new with lots of neon and that new store smell!
This store mostly reminds me of my other local Hispanic markets I regularly shop at, such as Superior Grocers and Cardenas. But Super King has a much more international inventory, but with prices equivlent to the Hispanic markets on produce and meats, and also great specials on foods I usually cannot find at my usual haunts.
As you can tell, I am totally geeked out about this place, but this is my thing. I would hope my fellow hounds in the Western I E will check this place out and help welcome them to our hood. I think it will impress!

French Fries in Vegas
Perhaps not fried in exotic fats, but we always love the fries at Carnegie Deli. They seem to be proper Belgian style(10mm) fries, always very hot and crisp, and a huge plate of them. When we go there it is hard to convince ourselves we need a side order when sandwiches are so huge and the complimentary pickles are sooo freakin' good( and they will keep refilling your pickle plate upon request). But the fries are that good that it is impossible for us to pass on the fries when we get there, we are frequent fryers!

Happy Tea Turns Into Whatever; Shades of East West Sandwiches
Totally intrigued by "buffet Friday" ! I sure hope you post about it. I am always interested in decent buffets, I know you have mentioned Osaka(previously W.C. Seafood buffet) in prior buffet discussions. I lived around the corner from Zen Buffet and it's previous permutations for many years, and "when" it was good, it could be very good if you picked your way carefully through the steam tables.
Thanks again for your intell on the SGV dining scene, very entertaining and informative.
Alaskan King Crab legs in Santa Monica: November
I would also urge you to try some Dungeness crab, as it is our local delicacy. Mid November is when the local D. crab season opens, and good seafood restaurants should have LIVE fresh local crab. Many( I would be among them) would say fresh Dungeys taste far better than frozen Alaskan crabs.
Eureka Burger - Claremont
Double points for you, Bradbury, for using the word "scandalously" with "lacking in beets". That made me smile big.
Tropical, Hawaiian, Polynesian Venue Needed
Thanks to all for both the replies and the sympathy. I will pass these venues on to my MIL, and she can decide what we will do.
And to you, Fake Name, and all the respondants to my request, I do not at all feel you are strangers. I have followed the LA, SD(since it's relatively recent inception) and California boards regularly for at least 15 years. I know you are all regular contributers here lately, so I feel as if I do know you. Besides, we are all members of a family, you know, the Chowhound family. Again, thank you all for the kind replies.
Tropical, Hawaiian, Polynesian Venue Needed
With a heavy heart I must ask my SD hound friends for help finding a place to have a memorial service, or wake in North County SD, for about 50 or so guests. My beloved brother-in-law loved Hawiian food and tropical decor, and we would like to have a gathering to celebrate his too-short life in a enviroment that will remind everyone of the recurring themes of his life.
Tropical theme is not completely necessary, but we are looking for an uplifting or beautiful spot, not just a drab room. Hotel banquet rooms or restaurant private rooms, or any suggestions you all might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
Fogo de Chao?
Website says opening fall 2011. Searched on this board with no results. Anyone know what's up? TIA
hatch chiles ?
I must have been there with you! They did a good job with the roasting, thank goodness we had the shade to stand under. The market did not really plan much for the event, perhaps next year they will do it in back of the store.
These were the same exact sacks of chiles that Albertson's sells each year, but $5 cheaper. Only one roaster, but that was appropriate for the crowd at hand this year.
We were there about an hour to get our sack roasted, while it took about 5 hours at Albertson's in La Habra the prior weekend.
What Freida's really nailed was in the packaging of the roasted chiles. They gave you the option of having your sack packed into 3 plastic bag lined boxes(still can/do leak), which allows the chiles to cool faster and not stew under the weight of the whole 30 pounds. DiveFan in a post above revealed the KEY about maintaining the structure of your chiles during the long freeze ahead, cool 'em quick!
hatch chiles ?
4+ hours in line at Albertsons La Habra. They sold out. Store opened at 6am, roasting at 8am. I was told people were lining up at 1am! I talked to 2 girls who arrived at 4:30am, they were at the roasters(5) about 9am.
Get there early, bring drinks, snacks, sunscreen and perhaps a chair. Don't forget an ice chest or container to keep the exuded chile juice out of your car if the plastic bag is breached(common rookie mistake).

Tamaleria, Pomona, Ontario, Chino???
Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to trying it.
Tamaleria, Pomona, Ontario, Chino???
Thank you for the late response! You can see by the date I was looking for Xmas eve tamales, which I never found. We did buy a dozen from Cardenas market deli, they were so bad that we could not possibly serve them to family and guests.
How is the farmers market, if I may ask? Are there many produce vendors, or is it one of the farmers markets that feature prepaed foods and other non-food vendors? We were spoiled where I lived before, as the Pasadena PHS farmers market was nearby, and was a truly fantastic market.
