Salad ideas for a crowd?

What about a couscous salad?

Couscous, Chickpea and Cranberry Salad <print-small-icon.png>
This is a beautiful salad to serve as part of a buffet meal. The sweet orange dressing goes so well with the dried cranberries, chickpeas and basil. Always have a container of orange juice concentrate on hand in the freezer for cooking and baking purposes; you can remove the amount needed while still frozen. **addition of sliced grilled chicken breast is very good!
1 cup chicken stock 1 Tbsp olive oil
1 cup couscous 2 Tbsp orange juice concentrate
3/4 cup canned chickpeas, rinsed/drained 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tsp grated orange rind 1/3 cup dried cranberries
3 Tbsp liquid honey 1/4 cup chopped green onion
1 tsp minced fresh garlic 1/4 cup diced red bell pepper
1/8 cup chopped basil or parsely

Bring the stock to a boil in a small saucepan. Remove from the heat. Stir in the couscous, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl, fluff with a fork and cool.
Stir the chickpeas, cranberries, green onions, red peppers and basil or parsley into the cooled couscous.
To make the dressing, whisk the olive oil, orange juice concentrate, lemon juice, orange rind, honey and garlic in a small bowl. Pour over the couscous mixture and toss to coat.

The Old Toronto Restaurants you make the wishes for the comeback

Yes they are both missed . Oliver's especially was so good, especially the bakery.I used to go there all the time and their croissants were the best.
Going waaay back I can think of the Underground Railroad, nothing has ever replaced it. The music, atmosphere and food were fantastic. I can still taste the smothered steak. Also at Bloor and Yonge there was a Hungarian place, forget the name , was it the Goulash Pot ? It had good food and was reasonable.Even Rugantino's across the street was good basic Italian food. Also Alex's on Mt. Pleasant was very good, went there for years.AHH memories!

Folia Grill: pork gyros is not your typical gyros...its ridiculously amazing

I had the chicken and my husband had the pork souvlaki this afternoon.OMG was it delicious !!! We also had the zucchini fries, another winner. We each had a pop and it was under $20.
The chicken was so tasty and tender , mixed in with their yummy fries, this huge stuffed pita was so filling for under $6 and we are stuffed. I told the nice young men cooking that I would post something good on here.

Kinnaree Thai on Ellesmere at Pharmacy - What's good there?

We just had lunch at Kinnaree and wow was it good. Spring rolls were excellent.I had the Red Chicken Curry [extra spicy] and my husband had the Spicy Beef .All was delicious !!! Can't wait to go back.
The owner was a very nice sweet man and he said he also does a lot of catering and they are open 7 days a week.
there are several other restaurants there in that strip. Any one tried the others?

where is the best fish and chips in Toronto/GTA??

The meat in the pie was dry and stringy with as I said ,hardly any gravy.I reheated it @ 350 for about 25 mins. with foil loosely on top so it would not over cook the crust.Neither my husband or I enjoyed it much.
The fish was nice and hot but maybe it should have been fried a little longer as the batter was not cooked through. It was not horrible just in comparison to Old Yorke it was not as tasty.

Really, that is a good deal. I like haddock I should try this sometime.Halibut is SO expensive.
One summer we went to Picton for 2 weeks and this little 2 story place on the main road going into town had the best EVER fish and chips. We must have eaten there 4-5 times .

where is the best fish and chips in Toronto/GTA??

By creamy I mean soft verses dry. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside,a perfect fry for me.
I do like Old Yorke as they have much more selection on their menu than Penrose.
I forgot to mention I ordered 2 steak and ale pies to go at High Street, had them the next day and the meat was dry and hardly any gravy.

Penrose is still my favorite for flavor, although the portions are TOO small I always have 2 orders. The sides are nothing great and the place is small but the fries are nice and creamy which I like.
The Old Yorke is very good with satisfying portions, good service and a very nice greek salad. We have taken out their key lime pie which is excellent.
This past weekend we tried High Street and was not that impressed. The fries were nothing special and the fish had a muckiness in between the batter and fish.
I ordered the green salad and it was bagged mixed greens thrown on a plate for $6 with salad dressing in a plastic container on the side.. Not impressed.

Any idea how to contact Parmigiano Trattoria on Yonge?

This place is still in business as I walk by everyday for work. Not sure if they are open Mondays but they are open every other day lunch and dinner.I have not eaten there yet so I'd like to hear what you think when you do go.
Oops I see below you already answered.

Well thats my problem, I don't own a baseball cap.
My husband really does not like much seafood which is why I skipped Diana's.
Birch and Lawr. is as far east as I'll go. Have to draw the line some where.lol I mean I live in Don mills. Why am I eating in Scarborough?
Do you know whats up on York Mills at Don Mills? I recently drove by but it was at night and It seemed there was a strip of places up there.I've tried googling but came up with nothing much.
Thanks again.

I'll also check out the Overlea suggestions. Thanks very much.

Edited to add. I just checked out both suggestions and they look good. I'll try the Naan and Kebob, now I know exactly where it is.

Hey,
Thanks so much for your input. Okay I will give Valley one more try for breakfast and they better make my eggs bennie right. lol
We did go to Congee Queen and we will go back.
High Street is on my list to try soon.
I have been to he Blackhorn a few times with family and had drive and it was good.My brother buys his steaks from the butcher next door.Too far for us to go by bus though.
I have heard about the Armenian Kitchen and may give it a try.
I have seen all those M.eastern places on Lawrence for Shwarma's and falafel which I love but most look like take out only. Thats about as far east as I'll travel. I grew up at Birchmount and Lawrence and my mother still lives there but really honestly, I loathe Scarberia [can I say that here?] lol
I did go to Arz last week and bought a pile of good food. One dish was the chicken stir fry at the meat counter which I cooked my self and stuffed in a fresh pita with roasted peppers and hummus. It was delicious. I also found preserved lemons that I've been searching for forever.A lot of their prepared veggies looked great too.
As far as the spots in Shops at Don Mills, Aroma is great and I tried Joey's but had a bad experience, so bad that i got a $50 card to go back but I hate the noise in there and not much appealed to me on their menu.Forget Glow, I've only heard bad reviews, forget Fabrica, over priced and not that good I've heard first hand. Also the outside of that place turns me right off. There is something very wrong looking about it. His food store is good but I tried his shepherds pie and chicken pot pie and I can do better.I saw some great looking coconut shrimps there but $40 a lb? I don't think so.
Soon I'll try Linda's and Sorrento's on Don Mills but it sounds hit and miss too.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me out..
Much appreciated!

I'm glad you did not have the same bad experience as we did.
Honestly my husband is not as picky as me and he kept talking about it all night.

Valley Fields on Lawrence

I realize the Don Mills area is not Yonge and Eg. as every second store on Yonge is a restaurant. But there are tons of apts. here and it's a big residential area so I'm surprised in the lack of eateries. We don't drive so I guess this is going to be a problem.
We frequented Grazies[excellent food and service], Mai Thai,The Good Bite[a great greasy spoon but not greasy]
Green Papaya,Gourmet Burger, Bamburger[the best burgers and fries],Hannah's Kitchen,Latte, good veal sandwiches , omelet's and lattes, Pickle Barrel[not great but okay], Ho Shin, Classico Pizza, excellent and a far cry from Pizza Pizza in the mall here. Also Jerusalem's which was a short bus ride and they they sure know how make a shish kebab plate. Also the Olde Yorke fish and chips is great.Edited to add Churrasco's and Amore's.
I guess when we want to go out to eat on the weekends we will have to head back west.

Valley Fields on Lawrence

After moving to Don Mills and Lawrence from Yonge and Eg. I'm finding out there is no decent food out here.
We went to Valley Fields on Sat. after reading a few posts. OMG,one of the worst meals I've ever had.
I had chicken shish kebab and my husband had a corned beef sandwich with fries and coleslaw.
Mine came glistening with oil covering everything. The roasted potatoes were rubbery and tasteless and the rice, oily and tasteless. Iceberg lettuce for the greek salad with the same oily dressing with 2 slices of pink tomatoes.. The chicken was the worst. Never cooked on a skewer they were thin flattened pieces of overcooked dry chicken cooked on the grill.Even the garlic bread was cooked on their greasy grill.
My husbands bread came toasted[who toasts a corned beef sandwich?] and was soaked with oil from the coleslaw beside it.
NEVER again!!!!!! $40 for garbage food.
