cooking class for a group

hi everyone,

i'm trying to find a cooking class in the city for 25 or more grad students. i've looked at the institute for culinary education and while the classes seem wonderful, they're a bit out of our price range. i'm looking for something more in line with $60-80/person. no real preference in terms of the food, but many of these people will be beginners just looking to cook a good meal, drink some wine, and have a nice night out.

thanks!

Brooklyn, Michigan and surrounding areas (including Ann Arbor)

in ann arbor, you need to go to zingerman's (arguably over-priced, but wonderful deli), cafe zola, and the fleetwood. the latter is as divey as you can get... which is to say it's wonderful.

Balade?

i've also been to balade and didn't love it. the food was over-priced and was incredibly bland. our hummus didn't have nearly enough tahini or lemon juice (and we had to ask for olive oil to dress it) and the chicken was incredibly dry. the search for good lebanese continues!

authentic middle eastern food

hi everyone,

i have a mini-mission to find good, genuine middle eastern food in this city. i'm from dearborn, mi and i am middle eastern, so i'm sort of a food snob when it comes to this cuisine. i've been to balade and found it bland and not super-authentic. plus, i'm more used to dive-y middle eastern restaurants anyway. i've also been to mamoun's and kebab garden and had the falafel and chicken schwarma, respectively... again, not quite. i'm looking for a place that has a broad menu that does the standards (fattoush, tabbouleh, hummus, babaganoush, pilaf, kibbi, dolma, lentil soup, chicken and lamb schwarma, lamb kebab, etc) and does them well. i'm more than willing to trek to queens or brooklyn, but if you know places in manhattan, that'd be awesome.

thanks so much!

veselka's oatmeal raisin cookies

hi all,

okay, i know that everyone goes to veselka for the borscht, pierogies and stroganoff (mmm), but i'm weirdly hooked on their oatmeal raisin cookies. the problem: i live uptown and it's a decent trek to make it down to LES. i don't know if the recipe is in the veselka cookbook (side note- how is that? i haven't been able to find recipe listings anywhere online), which would be the best solution, but if not, does anyone have suggestions for comparable oatmeal raisin cookies in the city? i'm looking for thick, doughy cookies with soft, chewy raisins.

thanks!
