HELP! Thoughts on CAFE STELLA (Silverlake)?
It's a good place overall. It strikes me as quite French in a number of ways, some of which people are mentioning in this thread. I've eaten plenty of food there that is every bit as good as if not better than Anisette in Santa Monica, which seems more highly regarded on this board.

I second everything you said above and would add It's Thai -- a new, somewhat Westernized Thai restaurant (in a good way, IMHO) -- to the list of solid recommendations.

Re: Spain restaurant. I think the seafood paella at Spain is pretty darn good and worth a try. Other things are passable at best. Having spent little time in Spain and no time in Argentina, I can't speak anything as to authenticity of the paella, but I've watched it being cooked and it strikes me as a legit dish.

I've been a couple of times. The falafel themselves were good but the sandwich itself wasn't that great IMO.
I will say that the falafel at Arax are probably better than those at Zankou.

Most on this board would. But this board is full of hype for new restaurants. All of them are supposedly terrific--Rivera, Drago Centro, Church & State, Chaya--and better than the old classics--Water Grill and Patina. But they're not. It's all hype. Drago Centro is the only one of them that is in the same class, IMHO.

What is the best Indian restaurant in LA?
It's not mediocre. It's similar to what I've eaten in Southern India and Singapore. You may just don't like Udipi cuisine. The other places you mention are good -- but haven't been to Paru's.

At least the most interesting places are Al Noor, Surati Farsan Mart, Udupi Palace, and Ambala Sweets and Spices
The difficulty is it's hard to find good Indian in LA proper. I would go so far as to say there is no very good Indian restaurant in LA proper.

We always get the rustic white loaf -- haven't tried anything else. Sorry if it's a crap recommendation, but we've been impressed with that particular bread.

Yeah, Border Grill's chips and salsas are at least interesting. My favorite salsa is actually a fourth, which comes with the wild mushroom quesadilla appetizer.

I like the nutty taste of the coffee at the Conservatory in Culver City.

Every time I've eaten there for lunch they've had all the lights turned off (even though there were many tables of diners). The only light generated in the room itself comes from a small cathode-ray-tube TV playing sports. I find the TV too small to watch. In terms of atmosphere, there really isn't any. Service has always been fine for me, however.

Al Noor is very good. It's probably the best northern Indian/Punjabi/Pakistani in Los Angeles. However, it doesn't seem like the South Bay to me, it seems like the ghetto. But that's OK. I didn't know they took over the property next door. I am pleased to report that every time I went to their tiny little location before there were plenty of diners.

Agreed. Wonderful place.
They seem to take their coffee very seriously. The couple of times I've been, I've found the coffee good but I haven't been wowed. That may be for two reasons. First, I've only ordered Kona and Jamaican Blue Mountain because they are hard to find in LA. These coffees are generally subtle and refined. Thus, it is not surprising that they didn't wow me. Second, they were among the most expensive items on the menu (around $15 for a cup) and it may be that the beans were not all that fresh as a consequence.
