My DH won't buy a Trader Joe's fresh turkey. Please discuss!
Thanks guys.
Cathy, I sent him the link. He pointed out:
"Is there an increased microbiological safety risk associated with raw poultry that is maintained at 26 °F?
No. The National Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Criteria for Foods, as well as several scientific organizations, agreed that there is no increased microbiological risk associated with raw product maintained at 40 °F or below. " ===> DH asked - for how long? He doesn't agree with the 'use by' date.
He also cut/pasted this snippet: "At home, immediately place fresh raw poultry in a refrigerator that maintains 40 °F or below and use it within 1 to 2 days"
~sigh~
We'll probably go with the frozen bird because he wants CHEAP. And he does prepare a very, very good turkey.
My DH won't buy a Trader Joe's fresh turkey. Please discuss!
I know this subject has been beaten like the proverbial dead horse (turkey?) but I want chowhound yays/nays and input. specific to this issue.
DH feels that birds slaughtered WEEKS before the 'use by' dates are bacteria and quality time bombs.
Perusing past chowhound threads assures me that TJs birds are pre-brined (or kosher dry brined) and kept at cooler temps so both help safely conserve the bird. Besides, they wouldn't sell and the lawyers would be very happy if there were truly a problem. I have only seen ONE chow bad bird post.
He is OK with a frozen supermarket free bird....he spatchkocks it and smokes it. We're not having a huge group so size isn't an issue.
THANKS for all replies!
ISO of gift ideas for Phladelphians from a Los Angeles c'hounder
Ooops I forgot that hungryintheburbs said upthread that you guys have Asian....but are short on Middle Eastern.
FWIW I picked up some cevapcici ground meat seasoning since we have a Croation presence. And some chile con limon fruit seasoning. Next on my list is See's candy, and I'll hit the farmers market for dates/pistachios . I've been saving my LA Times Food sections so I'm good there!

Bump? Any more ideas? How about Asian foods (rice noodles and rice wrappers for spring rolls)?

By the time my trip rolls around, citrus season will be over. I don't dare freeze whole citrus, I'll be tarred and feathered!
Hungryintheburbs mentioned you guys are short on Middle Eastern ingredients? Those I can get a plenty! How about Spanish ingredients, like arborio or carnoli rice? Paella pans? I can make a trip to donajuana.com.
I am going to save my Sunset magazines and LA Times Food sections, good ideas.
And of course I have access to Indian supplies, but if garam masalas are available there, etc., I'd be bringing coals to Newcastle.

Philly Ray - I can bring In-n-out paraphernalia - mugs, etc. Good idea! LOL about the drugs. I've traveled with Penzeys before with no unwanted attention.
DCF, what, Philly doesn't have good vibes?!? I am jealous just reading through the guide books. LA Times food section or Sunset Magazine might be a good filler as well.

"For best degustation, our macarons should be consumed within 3 days." - Paulette's
Dang. So close. I might not be meeting w/friends until later in my visit, hence I was searching out non-perishables. But I like what they offer for myself or as a hostess gift!

Oh I just remembered a great product for those of you who are checking luggage
Canned tomatoes: 6-in-1 brand ground tomatoes, right here from central California. These are so sweet you can eat them out of the can. Pizza forum people love this brand! You can find them at Italian grocers or order them dirt cheap online at escalon.net.

Hello Philadelphia -
I'll be visiting some foodie friends in your city of Brotherly Love later this year and would like to bring them some appropriate gifts. As much as I would love to bring Graber Olives and Paso Robles olive oils, as well as some Pinot Noir wine, I can't bring those on the plane as carry-on items and we don't check luggage.
Is there anything you guys miss from the Left Coast? I know you are probably well stocked on Italian foods, and you have Trader Joe's out there as well, but maybe some Vietnamese rice paper wrappers for goi cuon, Meyer lemons, locally made spice blends etc.? I can't bring anything perishable.
Thanks so much. Philly cheesesteaks, RTM, Barnes Foundation here we come!

Oh thanks guys this is a help!
Meyer lemons will be on my list (now I have to find them!). Cherimoyas are probably too delicate and wouldn't make it out of my house, we'd eat them. How about Helen Grace chocolate instead of See's, is that a notch up? This is a foodie crowd who is very familiar with Penzey's, but the chili lemon blend is a step in the direction I'm looking for. I can swing by the Spice Station tomorrow after I drop off my kid - will they be OK with me asking 'what you do you have that will blow Penzey's out of the water?' LOL.
lynnlato, I know, those Grabers are something else.
I thought about the pumpkin bread but I can't store it that long. As it is, I'm concerned about the lemons.
I'm going to cross post on the Philadelphia forum, so like-minded Angelenos, feel free to peek to see what they are missing. I think they have enough Italian supplies there (so no Tipo flour), but lets see what they want from the Left Coast.

I searched this board for 'plane' and 'airplane' and came up empty, so if this particular topic has been discussed, forgive me and please link.
As much as I would love to bring my foodie friends on the East coast local goodies like Graber Olives and Paso Robles olive oil, I can't take those on a plane and we don't check luggage.
All I can think of right now is See's candy. Perishables like cheese are a no go since they won't survive until I meet with friends.
I can hunt around the Hollywood area and downtown (does Mercado La Paloma have cooking toys?) tomorrow, and I never need an excuse to go to Surfas, although I'm in the South Bay area.. I'm open for gadgets as well as food items that will travel well (crackers.....um, too fragile). Chili mixes?
I would raid Trader Joe's but they have them there, curses, TJs is always my fallback LOL.
Thanks, 'hounds.

The Grill Restaurant at the Westin Long Beach: opinions?
Has anyone been there, are there any online menus, is this the old Tracht place? Is it too downscale for a nice evening out pre-theater with friends? We do the circuit of restaurants in the area before our shows at the International City Theatre so we know what else is out there as well.
Thanks!

Pavich's Brick Oven 'Pizzafe' in Rancho Palos Verdes now open
The place literally just opened three hours ago.
29701 S. Western Avenue at Summerland
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275
(310) 832-1200
They will be full force open next week from 7:00AM to 11:00PM, selling coffee in the AM (looked like a pretty boss coffee set up) with croissants and pastries - I guess thats why he is calling it a 'Pizzafe'.
There are ten tables, with seating for about 32 (I counted just for chowhounders)
DH, who orders from them by the carful for his department at work, was recognized and warmly greeted - the owner knew me because I've been driving by and demanding to know when he would open, LOL.
We are very happy with the pizza and will return!
(They need someone to do a website, any takers?)
Easter Sunday dinner in Eugene: what will be open?
We're rolling into town Sunday afternoon/evening. Even if Marche is open, its a bit too much foo-foo food for my teens. Belly is closed Sun/Mon so that is out too! Doesn't have to be fancy, we're good with casual, but I don't think DH wants to drive to the BBQ place outside town. Would LOVE to do localvore but we'll see what y'all come up with. I've done a litle homework, pat me on the head.
Thanks, homies.
(I'll take recommendations for Salem as well for Monday night)
mailing stuff back to the US from spain?
What PBSF said. You can buy lots of Spanish goodies through LaTienda or DonaJuana websites. Don't forget that even metal canned items are not allowed in carry-on USA bound luggage.
Restaurants.com??
I buy about 30 'gift certificates' at a time when they run 80-90 percent off. They sit in my account and I redeem them only as needed, for the restaurants I want at any given moment. Their system is somewhat cumbersome, but it works for me.
Starting My Research for Family-Oriented Trip to NOLA
Parkway Tavern at night, not crowded lunch
Cafe du Monde as dinner dessert, not breakfast, lines are HUGE in the mornings?
Bad taste in my mouth from the Chef's behavior-Fabulous food! (Long)
In light of the chefs/GMs response, I'll hold off on posting. You went on a Friday night, NYE, correct? One would think the chef/owner would have been on-site. I thought Sundays was the usual day off.
Bad taste in my mouth from the Chef's behavior-Fabulous food! (Long)
ScarlettNola, thanks for the info. Our family, back from a recent visit to NOLA, has allergies and religious food issues (kosher style) and we would prefer a restaurant that would accomodate substitutions. We almost made it to DK, LOL. If you don't mind, I'll post a link about your experience on the 'pseudo-kosher' thread I started on the NO board recommending that similarly minded folks call the restaurant first if they wish to inquire about changes.
Frozen Tilapia tastes earthy
See my post above - read the bag to determine where it is from - China?
What restaurant has your favorite duck?
Finally back home and recovered - for our last meal, I couldn't find Gabrielle's, and my heart was set on Luke's for NYE. My game plan was to show up at 5:00-5:30 to beat the crowds, but DH, my photo bug, decided that it was more important to take pictures of the rising moon from the dock at Blaine's Mardi Gras World. By the time we got back to the hotel to pick up the kids and change clothes, it was too late for any of the good restaurants *snif*. But...we ended up in line at The Gumbo Shop and guess what - they had a mean 1/2 roast duck! Thanks to everyone for your help.

Comments on Commander's Jazz Brunch
We were there Jan 1 and the two outstanding dishes were the (1) Smoked Duck & Foie Gras Gumbo - A rich and elegant winter gumbo with braised duck, mushrooms, roasted garlic, Tabasco and foie gras dark roux and the(2) Foie Gras Pain Perdu - Ponchatoula strawberries flambéed with brandy and caramelized brown sugar over milk punch French toast with whipped foie gras mousse, candied pecans and chicory coffee anglaise.
What restaurant has your favorite duck?
We dined at Irene's last night. We showed up ten minutes before they opened (5:30) - there was a short line, soon it was pretty long - we were about fifth in - and we were seated immediately.
DH and I ordered the duck - OMG - perfect heaven, I think I like duck now!
One down, two or three more to go!
What restaurant has your favorite duck?
Thanks again EC. Did I read somewhere that Irene's is hard to get into - no reservations, long waits?
What restaurant has your favorite duck?
I was going to title this thread 'Quack about your favorite duck' but thought better of it
Anywhoo...lets see if this thread takes flight (sorry).
Brigstens? Upperline? Lots more choices, I'm sure!
Need a list of places that have L/D entrees for 'pseudo' kosher
EC I'm laughing too hard to type
He says 'I consider street food to be a place you go into to get a sandwich. Like those muffalletas'.
I can just see us standing in line at the Central Grocery asking for a veggie muff.
Anyone have a menu for the Central Grocery? LOL.
Truth be told I think DH meant very casual for lunch.
Need a list of places that have L/D entrees for 'pseudo' kosher
Thanks nolachik! One of my kids loves middle eastern so Attiki will take care of that.
If anyone has any opinions on how 'accomodating' any of the restaurants are on the list - for example - 'I'd like the duck, but can you please hold the shrimp sauce and substitute your french fries for the bacon mashed potatoes' - let me know which places would be OK and which would NOT be - I don't want to insult anyone!
(and of course NOW my DH tells me he wants to pretty much eat street food)
