Upselling wines
I learned a valuable lesson several years ago after unfortunate events at both Primo e Secondo and Il Mulino. I now know that when you order a bottle of "X" and the waiter returns to your table to inform you that they just sold the last bottle but they have something very similar, ALWAYS ask the price (yes, even if you have guests and don't want to look cheap). To me "something very similar" means give or take a couple of bucks, not $20-$30 more per bottle (especially painful if you go through two bottles before finding out that you've been screwed). Funny how a good bottle of wine can leave a bitter taste!
5 new food trucks for this summer
Yes, but think how fun the Faubourg wil be in a couple of years :-)
Tasty Foods
It will taste exactly like you remember it. That being said it won't live up to your expectations.
Montreal food tour
I work in Old Montreal and try to avoid Marché de la Villette like the plague. It tries much too hard to look like a Parisian bistro/market while serving barely passable food. If they spent less effort on the look and more effort on the food they would be far better off.
Breakfast near Westin? Or is it worthwhile to take Metro outside the area? Sorry to post again!
It has closed for good.
New resto bar PORTUGALIA
sorry for the delay:

Restaurant Closings in 2012
It looks like the space is being gutted and renovated rather than just a fresh coat of paint and a new name.
New resto bar PORTUGALIA
There is a new Portuguese grilled chicken place that recently opened on Queen Mary just west of Decarie. I did take out when they first opened and it was pretty good. They were talking about the possibility of delivery in the near future.
Visiting MO- any cool food trucks?
Of course Victoria Day exists here...we just call it something else :-) (First it was Fetes de Dollard but now National Patriots Day)
Chez Gautier: yea or nay?
My last time there was almost ten years ago and it was just OK.
Wedding reception at a restaurant: on Grand Prix Weekend... help please?
Why not try calling MAS Cuisine in Verdun. It is one of the best restaurants in the city and, since they are usually closed on Saturdays anyway, might be willing to host a private function.
Cafe with good quality and unique salads - need to order for a crowd
I find everything too heavy and/or greasy.
Cafe with good quality and unique salads - need to order for a crowd
I agree (at least about the not cheap and huge variety...two out of three ain't bad).
L'Autre, Europea, LeGrain DeSel
Le Grain de Sel was a very good restaurant when I last ate there more than 20 years ago. The mere fact that it is still open after all this time means it is probably still good. Whether it is worth schlepping out to that area from downtown is another matter entirely.
Why there's no Conveyor sushi Restaurant
I've had much better sushi at fast food conveyor places in Vancouver than at many of the higher end sushi joints in Montreal. Sad but true.
Restaurant Closings in 2012
I try to frequent Java U over Starbucks or Second Cup since they offer more and better food choices. I have yet to enjoy a Starbucks coffee which, to me at least, always taste burnt.
Openings in 2012
There is an opening soon sign on the east side of Parc between Bernard and Van Horne for "Mi & Stu" a gluten, peanut, and dairy free bakery. Website is www.miandstu.com
Anything decent in ndg/ mtl west/snowdown/cote st luc
The Monkland Taverne is still very good and still one of your best bets for a good meal/wine combo in the area.
Rumors abound about the sale of Schwartz's
Not "franchising" is not necessarily the same thing as not opening up a slew of Schwartz's eateries under the same corporate banner/ownership. Surely Rene & Celine have enough money to open dozens more without seeking franchisees.
Anyone been to Van Horne yet?? Reviews??
Again in devil's advocate mode. If you are a good chef with two extra sets of arms perhaps, but if all your veg has already been cut/chopped for the evening and to take the time to prep a special dish might screw up service for other diners you might prefer to see to the needs of the many rather than the few.
Anyone been to Van Horne yet?? Reviews??
Just to play the devil's advocate for a moment, might it not be a better idea when reserving your table for 6 to ask whether the restaurant can accommodate a vegetarian? I'm pretty sure that with a couple of hours notice the chef would have been more than happy to oblige. To wait until you are seated is perhaps a little too late.
To automatically assume that a restaurant can accommodate special dietary requirements without advance notice and then slam them on a public chat board is somewhat unfair.
Just my $.02
Visiting Montreal Mid-April - Must visits please
Sadly Montreal has no wine merchants. What we do have is the provincial liquor board Societe des Alcools du Quebec which has a monopoly on the sale of wine and spirits. Check out www.saq.com for a list of products, locations, etc. Be forewarned that prices are quite high but we do tend to get some products which are hard to find elsewhere.
Restaurant Closings in 2012
Le Petit Moulinsart on St-Paul has closed after 20 years. There is a sign in the window saying they will try to re-open in a new location.
