Mars Food (College St.) Voted BEST AUTHENTIC 24/7 DINER for 2012

Gawd, I used to love that stuff. Such an amazing breakfast with the great homefries, dark rye toast, fresh tasting cole slaw, and perfectly cooked eggs.

Mars Food (College St.) Voted BEST AUTHENTIC 24/7 DINER for 2012

Best authentic diner, 1982, yes. Jimmy was just starting there and it was hopping.

Where to find less common/unusual greens in the GTA?

Most supermarkets carry the Southern US staple, collard greens. Tradionally they're slow-cooked with smoked pork (ham hocks, bacon), but it's not necessary if you prefer a vegetarian version.. I just sauté some onion, add washed, cut-up greens (tough stems removed) and a little chicken stock with s & p to taste. It probably only takes 45 min to an hour.

Bagel frustration

Good points, embee, but probably still good for toasting, which is how I prefer any Mtl bagel which is more than a couple of hours old.

Where To Buy Granulated Brown Sugar in Toronto

PC has natural sugar in its organic line. It comes in a carton (like a 1 litre milk carton).

looking for vietnamese sandwich

The standard banh mi in Toronto (for example, Nguyen Huong) is a fresh mini baguette (roll), spread with a mixture of paté and mayo. Fillings are assorted Vietnamese cold cuts with cucumber, pickled carrot and daikon, and cilantro. Hot peppers are optional, but I always get mine 'spicy'. Usually $1.50 or $1.75 these days, I think. What an amazing bargain.

Natrel Dark Chocolate Milk

I tried it this week. My wife says it tastes like the bottom of a glass of poorly mixed home-made chocolate milk. I must say I agree with her. It made me want to cut it with plain milk, which I did.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

'Burger obsession'?

looking for vietnamese sandwich

There's a Nguyen Huong location at 5661 Steeles Avenue East, west of Middlefield. I've never eaten at that one, but the banh mi is pretty consistent at the Spadina shop.

Large Gathering in or around Bayview / Davisville

LTH is now Global Bazaar, one of the places mentioned earlier in this thread by sloweater.

PC Products to go Artificial Flavour and Colour Free

I'm with you, disgusti. I shop at all the major chains, as well as some independents. Some products are good here, some better there. Those guys have a major hate-on for Loblaws. It's no worse than the others imho.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

I rarely order 'cheeseburgers' when I'm out because of the use of processed cheese slices. I love real cheddar on burgers, however. I have no problem with it and totally prefer the taste (since processed cheese pretty much has none).

Dim Sum at Dragon Dynasty - Could be some of GTA's best!

They might be regulars, but they're also rude.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

That's the equivalent of adding no flavour. I prefer old or extra old cheddar on a burger.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

That's a very instructive post, LH. Thanks. I've only been to BP and think it's great. Realistically, I can only eat so many burgers out., so I probably won't get around to the other 2. They're not too difficult to (almost) duplicate at home and infinitely fresher when they're right out of the pan and onto your waiting bun. I would have great difficulty ordering a burger at SY, thereby passing on the chicken or smoked offerings, as some other posters have mentioned.

best breakfast joint in Toronto?

I agree with petek about Good Bite. It's a pretty standard, but well prepared breakfast. Kind of like the Mars downttown on College. There's also The Homeway almost directly east of the Good Bite, on Mt. Pleasant.

Theee best crispy beef in the GTA

I actually got to try the crispy beef at Hong Shin the other night. It was very interesting, to say the least. Slightly spicy, crispy, very little sauce and quite sweet. I agree with chocabot that I would have likes it with more sauce and heat. Strangely addictive, though. Other dishes that were ordered (chicken fried rice and vegetable chow mein) were much less than stellar, but they did have their fans among the people who were sharing with me.

Best Italian Sandwich

I'm with you on the panzarotto and the slice (when it's fresh). Never tried the sandwich, though. I always go down the block to California.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

Not necessary, Flexitarian...I'm a self-appointed member.

Food Network Canada Programming

The Luke Nguyen shows sound like what I enjoy watching. There was a series on for a while with Australian chef, Kylie Wong which I used to like.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

There are plenty of references to 'authentic' butter tarts, but here's an example: http://www.food.com/recipe/award-winning-butter-tarts-14756
Your friend's mom/grandmother obviously made them with currants, but that's not the only 'authentic' way to make them. My mom made them with raisins. My family wasn't fond of currants.

I agree with your take on Ice Cold Cash....such a stupid concept. That said, I really despise 90% of the competition shows. As a matter of fact I have lately been tuning in to the 'Latin' network (Telelatino) which airs straight-up cooking shows like Rick Bayless', Mexico, One Plate at a Time, Lidia's Italy, Lidia's Family Table etc. Personally, I'd prefer Julia Child to most of today's gimmicky programming. But that's just me...

Do all Costcos carry the same things?

I just got one from the Billy Bishop Costco (Dufferin and Wilson).

Theee best crispy beef in the GTA

Oh, too bad, chocabot. Sounds like it has potential, though. Maybe if you ask for it extra spicy?

Not THEEE best crispy beef!!!!

Why did you start a new thread? You should have written this in the original thread.

Theee best crispy beef in the GTA

I know that my son and some of his friends are addicted to the Crispy Beef at Hong Shing, 195 Dundas in Old Chinatown. Apparently that's what everyone in the late-night crowd orders there. It's #67, Honey Spicy Crispy Beef, $9.50 on the dinner menu.

Toronto's Best Slice

Is Bravo the one in the little plaza on Millwood? I tried it once and thought it was pretty good.

Any chow worthy cheap eats in Kensington Market since last year

Ahh, we have Brazilian friends who only eat avocado sweet, not savoury like guacamole. They make avocado ice cream and avocado smoothies in Brazil.

Oh, interesting. And those paletas flavours are so amazing. I'll try to go back and have a look around soon. The place in Nashville is called, Las Paletas. Here's a link: http://thehungrysoutherner.com/2010/05/14/review-las-paletas-nashvilletn/
Wish it was here in TO.

Helenhelen, that is a fantastic post. l just have one question...have you tried the stand, in the El Gordo spot, that sells paletas (Mexican popsicles)? When I was in a month or so ago, it was too early in the am for them to be open. These things are ridiculously good when I've had them elsewhere (Nashville), and I'd love to hear if anyone has tried them here in Toronto. Flavours like avocado or cucumber, lime and chilli are killer. Hope, hope.
