Bucktown/Wicker Park

Great choices, thanks! too bad there is not enough time for everything.

Brunch River North - or not too far.

Thanks for the suggestions. Eggsperience and Yolk look like good choices for what I was looking for.

Brunch River North - or not too far.

we have Saturday night dinner at Carnivale and Sunday night at Quartino. Looking for a nice place for brunch but not too heavy. Staying in River North and probably shopping after - so don't want to go too far. any ideas?

Bucktown/Wicker Park

First Monday in July we will be in Bucktown/Wicker Park. Want to have Brunch/Lunch somewhere good and that evening a good dinner. We will also consider anything in area (Logan Square or other).

We definitely want to go to Big Star and Violet Hour for drinks, (probably before dinner) want some other recs for after dinner. For Dinner that night or lunch the next day, I was thinking of taking our group to Longman and Eagle or Telegraph at Logan Square.

Thanks!

Luke or Herbsaint

If you go to Herbsaint, definitely have the spaghetti appetizer.

Please help me choose between these restaurants for dinner

I would also recommend Bon Ton. And specifically the Crawfish Etouffe. If you like getting off the beaten path, Elizabeths would be a good choice.

Herbsaint AND Couchon

Have reservations at both this weekend. I started fairly early trying to make reservations. Must be pretty busy friday night. I really wanted to try Couchon, be we got in Saturday. Friday night, Herbsaint. I later found out both were same owners. Are they different enough?

Saturday Brunch

That sounds like a plan. Does Elizabeths take reservations or just show up? Is there usually a line?

Saturday Brunch

Brunch in the quarter this Saturday. Thinking about Royal House because they have televisions so some can watch football while we eat and drink. Any other suggestions?

Quarter Restaurant w/ TV's

Looking for a restaurant or Sports Bar in or near the French Quarter that has Televisions where we can relax, eat and watch football on a September Saturday. Would like to make reservations for about 12 people late morning. Any ideas? Palace Cafe, Mr. B's, Nola come to mind. Doesn't have to be that upscale, but I would like to make a reservation.

first time in new orleans, help with dining itinerary

I would definitely go to Felix's, but just go to the bar and have Oysters. They The Bon Ton for what I think is some of the best food in NO. It is not far from the quarter on Magazine.
I always stop at Mena's Palace (diner) on Chartres and have a bowl of Gumbo. Someone told me once to find it because they thought they have the best in NO, and I think it is pretty darn good.

Skip Court of 2 Sisters. Skip Mothers.

After or before dinner, Carosel Bar at Monteleone, Hermes Bar at Antoines and on the top of the Royal Orleans in the Quarter is a great bar with a great view. I am not sure how late it is open, so you might want to go before dinner. I hear Bombay Club has a great bar and if you are by Pat O'briens and there isn't too long of a line, go in the piano bar and have a Hurricane.

Wander through every street in the Quarter during the day and check out the architecture and courtyards. Some you can walk in and some you are able to peak in. Many of the hotels have nice courtyards. I was married in the Courtyard of the St. Louis Hotel.

St. Louis Hotel vs. Maison Dupuy for wedding reception?

I got married in the St. Louis hotel courtyard. We looked at Maison Dupuy, also. I definitely liked the St. Louis courtyard better. This was few years ago, but they had good menu choices and set up a bar for us. We actually had the ceremony and the reception there. We had a dixieland band, "The Storyville Stompers" that played for the wedding. We got our wedding cakes from Gambino's bakery. The grooms cake was a "doberge" cake, which is a layered cake that is popular in NO and popular for grooms cakes. We looked at every courtyard in the quarter and the St. Louis was our favorite. It can be covered in case of rain, also.

Best places to eat in Dallas

emf2008

I recommend Javier's - - upscale Mexican food
http://www.javiers.net

Uncle Julios - - casual Tex Mex

La Duni - - Latin Restaurant with good fun, but they have the most unbelievable dessert.
Cuatro Leches Cake - you have to try it.

The Best Thing You Ever Ate: New Orleans

Crawfish Etoufee at the Bon Ton.

Chicago to NOLA on I-55

Como, Mississippi is about an hour south of Memphis. The Como Steakhouse is a cool little Mississippi place to eat. There is also a place close by on Sardis Lake called the Holiday Lodge.

Dallas Trip

Just got back from a Dallas weekend and wanted to report a couple of good meals.

La Duni Cafe on McKinney-- Excellent Mojitos. Had an appetizer assortment of Plantains, Yuca a few different ways and it was pretty good. My entree was Mahi Mahi and I would recommend that. The Cuatro Leches Cake is absolutely one of the my favorite desserts ever. It would be hard for one person to eat the whole piece of cake, for it is a little heavy and very, very sweet.

Toulouse-- on Knox. We really enjoyed our lunch their. We had the Mussels prepared with tomatoes, olives in a broth that was excellent and I had french onion soup.

La Duni Baking Studio on Oak Lawn-- We went to Uncle Julios and there was a 2 hour wait so we returned to another location of La Duni. We had the appetizer with melted provolone cheese and olive oil that you wrapped in a fresh flour tortilla. Everyone liked it. Most of our table had sandwiches and they looked great. I had a Calamari Ceaser Salad and it was good, but I wished I would have gotten the Cuban Sandwich that the guy next to me had.
We had the Cuatro Leches Cake again and it was just as good. They have a long list of Coffees, Espressos and Cappucinos that looked and sounded good, but I didn't try one.

If any chowhounds head to dallas, you should go to one of the La Duni's and try the Cuatro Leches Cake or one of their other cakes. There were a number of people in the place just for dessert. They have a restaurant and bakery in Northpark Mall, too.

We had a great sandwich at Eatzi's. We visited Central Market on Lovers Lane which is a very impressive grocery store, with a lot of beer and wine, too.

We ate at Pappadeaux on New Years Eve. They did a good job taking care of our big group. We enjoyed the drinks and the oysters. I had the Northwest platter with shrimp, lobster and scallops. It was pretty good, but way too salty. Everyone elses food looked really good, but I didn't hear many comments on it.

Oh yeah, Fuel City for breakfast tacos and Taco Cabana for breakfast tacos. Both were excellent.

Gallon of Gumbo in the Quarter

I think Mena's Palace on Chartres has great gumbo. You might check with them.

Dallas - New Years Day Brunch

Got a good suggestion for New Years Day Brunch--- Uptown, Downtown or maybe Oak Lawn?

Wood Fire Kirby's -- Greenville Avenue

Reservations are filling up at most places. I really don't want to go to a $$$$ place. When you are responsible for your group, you try to pick something that everyone will be happy with. How about Trader Vics?

Wood Fire Kirby's -- Greenville Avenue

Has anyone been there? I have made reservations for New Years Eve dinner.

New Orleans Trip Report (LONG!!!) November 9-14, 2009

Christine, great report and I am impressed with your plans. Amazing how you included some of the places I have wanted to go. Next time I go to NO, I am definitely going to that museum. I have been to NO twice in the past month for a nice afternoon with my sons. There is no place like New Orleans. So many great local places like no other city these days. It is tough in the restaurant business these days and so many cities have the same places on every block and corner. We ate at The Gumbo Shop and I had the Softshell Crab and pasta and it was delicious. One of my sons had Gumbo and the other had the Jambalaya, Red beans and rice plate. The both told me it was a good choice. The time before we ate at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen in the French Market and I had Bar-B-que shrimp and my son had a pasta dish which both were very good. Next trip, I definitely want to plan to eat at Irene's Cusine on Chartres. Brightsens is on my short list. I had a good meal at Feelings Cafe a few years ago. Is it still good? Also, there is a place on Chartres closer to Canal called Mena's Palace. A small diner. Someone told me they have the best Gumbo in NO and I tried it. I don't disagree, it is pretty darn good.

Dallas - New Years

I want to go ahead and make a Dallas New Years reservations. We are in town for the Cotton Bowl staying at the Anatole. Any ideas for a good place to have an early (like 6:00) dinner for 8 to 12 people? American, Italian, Mexican, Steak, Seafood would all be fine. Something kind of festive would be nice.

Maria Pia in theatre district - any good?

I think it is a great choice. Been to Vice Versa a couple of doors down and Maria Pia and we liked Maria Pia better. Pretty reasonable, too.

Oxford, MS

Marie's Lebanese in Oxford is excellent. The best Lebanese I have ever had. Nice, very clean place. Good wait staff. My teenage sons really like Marie's. Excellent Hummus, Tabouli, kabobs, lebanese Cassarole.

Sinatra or Como place

Can you name me some itailan restaurants in New York that play Frank Sinatra and Perry Como type music and serve great food? I miss my old fav place in Memphis that closed down a few years ago. Anywhere in Manhattan would be fine.

Crawfish Etoufee

Crawfish Etoufee at the Bon Ton on Magazine streat was fantastic. Everything else there was delicious, too.

Tuscaloosa - Birmingham

Anyone eaten at Newks? Whats it like? What should I order there?

Tyler - Newks

Anyone been to Newks in Tyler? Whats it like?

Head Cheese and Charcuterie in Dallas

I have to add to this one. If you are in New York and in the village, stop by Faicco's and they have these great pork/rice balls or something like that. They are already prepared and you can eat them there. They are fantastic. The on the same street is Murreys cheese shop and Rocco's pastry shop.
