Tim Tams

Several weeks ago they were advertized in the Rexall Pharma Plus flyer. I gather that they are a regular item.

Sour cherries?

A bought a pail of cherries $19.99 at Food Basics, Rockwood Mall. The Basics store on Dundas and East Mall had sign in the window "Red tart cherries available July 17 - Aug.7".

FANTASTIC Breakfast Place that all Torontonians shoud know about!

The last time i had breakfast at Sunrise, I was disappointed that I was not served a standard, large size egg. I should mention that I ordered the "light" breakfast which included a nice variety of fruit, but I was expecting my egg yolk to be bigger than the size of a loonie. I'm not kidding ... it was so tiny!! Maybe it was just a one time thing but from now on when I order breakfast at a new restaurant, I ask if they serve large eggs.

Buttermilk

I have frozen buttermilk in 1 cup containers. It is fine when it comes to baking.

What to do with egg yolks?

This site has recipes for using from 1 to 8 egg yolks.

ISO recipe for "City Chicken"

City Chicken is also know as "Meat on Sticks" or patyczki Garlic is an essential ingredient. Be sure to include it for authentic flavor!!

1 lb. veal
1 lb. pork
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tbsp. French salad dressing
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, beaten
dry bread crumbs
oil for frying
1 onion, sliced
3 carrots, grated
1/2 cup water

Cut the meat into 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces. Place veal in one bowl and pork in another. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic and French dressing. Cover and allow to marinate over night in the fridge. Thread meat on wooden skewers alternating one piece of pork and one piece of veal. Allow 6 pieces of meat per skewer. Press firmly together. Coat with flour, dip into egg and then coat with bread crumbs. Mould the mixture with your hands to form drumsticks. Fry in 1/2 inch of oil. Turn until all sides are browned. Drain and place in roasting pan. Sprinkle with onions, carrots and water. Cover and bake at 300 for about 1 hour. Makes about 25 drumsticks.

Long Branch, New Toronto, Mimico Restaurants & Food Shops

I just tried the Empanada Company today. Good size and good price. I really enjoyed the spinach variety.

Where to find Frozen Cherries? Is this a seasonal thing?

I usually buy my frozen cherries in pails from Loblaws around the first week of July. You could also try MacMillan Frozen Foods. They have all kinds of products including cherries. The location though, may not be convenient. Check out their website.

Where to find White Whole Wheat Flour in Toronto (West)

I haven't found it in Toronto but I did buy some across the border at Tops Supermarket.

ISO POMI chopped tomatoes (GTA)

i just returned from HF in Mississauga and there were only boxes of strained Pomi tomatoes. No chopped tomatoes.

Spin Dessert Cafe

Has anyone tried this place and care to report back? Spin is located on the north side of the Queensway west of Islington, and across the street from the Cineplex Theater. I think they offer menu items other than just desserts.

William's Coffee Pub - closed

I heard that the location on North Queen, close to Sherway Gardens is closed. Sorry to see it go.

U.S. vs. Canadian beef in Canadian restaurants (split from Ontario board)

"There is not much Canada prime available"... I just don't believe that. I sure would like to hear what the cattle farmers have to say.

1800 Degrees @ Bloor & Royal York

Again, I have to wonder why they choose to serve only American beef rather than support Canadian farmers. It makes me wonder if any restaurants in the U.S. would bold advertise "We serve only Canadian beef."

La Veranda opening @ Royal York & Bloor

I just looked at the menu for 1800 degrees and noticed that they only use beef from the U.S. That kind of turns me off. What's wrong with Canadian beef and supporting our farmers???

Shawarmas in Toronto

The shawarma at Medina in the food court at Sherway Gardens is quite good. Not in Toronto, but Paramount Food 1290 Crestlawn Drive in Mississauga is an authentic place for all sorts of Middle Eastern Food.

Mitzi's - the second location

When I was at Mitzi's, on Saurauren, the staff mentioned that a second location was opening on College St. Just wondering if anyone has been there and how it compares to the original.
Mitzi's gets so busy for breakfast and it would be nice to have another location. ( Mitzi's Sister on Queen, is not open for breakfast.)

New Cora's Location

Another location will soon open on the Queensway, east of Sherway Gardens, south side.

Recommendations for Superb Breakfast Place?

Thanks so much for this recommendation. It's my new favourite place for breakfast and I would not have know about it if I didn't read about it here. I had a large (oatmeal) pancake with devon cream and cherries. Delish...

Fresh Sour Cherries (Where to find?)

As I was leaving Food Basics a few days ago, there was a sign at the door indicating that you had to place an order for the cherries with the produce manager. They always bring in a few extra pails but by placing an order you won't miss out.

Looking to take some friends out (in etobicoke)

La Veranda Osteria is on Royal York, just north of Bloor. I've been for both lunch and dinner and I have really, really enjoyed the meals. It's worth checking out.

La Veranda opening @ Royal York & Bloor

A new restaurant called La Veranda Osteria is opening in the former Cru location. It's a family restaurant and the lunch menu has several choices for $8.95. The dinner menu looked pretty reasonable too. They open on Tuesday, May 19.

A few blocks away, on Bloor east of Royal York, an Open Window bakery has also opened. There's a lot of seating space.

Hot Oven Bakery @ Cloverdale Mall

The orange chiffon cake is really good and I love their butter tarts too. They used to sell amazing donuts but no longer do so. At first I thought it was because of competition from Tim Hortons around the corner (at Cloverdale) but it seems that the BWV location doesn't have donuts either.

Lunch recommendation Queen & University

It's more of a casual get together.

Where to buy Ukrainain Baked Goods?

La Rose Bakery is an Italian Bakery. I haven't seen any Ukrainian food there. (By the way, the new coffee place Za Za or something like that has great coffee!)

Lunch recommendation Queen & University

A few friends are meeting mid-week for lunch. I'm not familiar with the restaurants in the area - we don't mind walking a bit. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
