81st birthday dinner

Davios might be a good choice- either in town (valet) or in the burbs.

Quiche. What kind? How many?

I agree that strata is a better idea and that you can get away with 2. I have made this one a few times and it is great http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Prosciutto-and-Goat-Cheese-Strata-108946
There are others on Epicurious that look good as well.

New French bakery in Wellfleet?

We saw over the weekend that this place was hopping. I am very excited to try it out!

Best Pizza on Cape Cod?

We love Savory. The dough is great and the toppings are yummy. Friendly people. The salads are fresh. It is a great change of pace from typical Cape fare. The ice cream is also great.

Need advice: How to be better organized for weeknight meals?

The Six O Clock Scramble is a great resource. You receive an email once a week and a searchable database of relatively healthy recipes. You can maintain your own recipe box of your favorites. The best part is that you can cusomize the week's recipes and it compiles a grovery list for the whole week's shopping. I have been subscribing for a couple years and it has eliminated weeknight take-out. http://thescramble.com/

Restaurants with Gluten-Free Menus (or just allergy friendly)

Erbaluce is very sensitive to Gluten issues and has an interesting menu

Pre-Vacation Russo's trip?

I am getting very excited for my pilgrimage tomorrow!

Pre-Vacation Russo's trip?

Great advice, thanks....

Pre-Vacation Russo's trip?

guacamole is a great idea- thanks!

Pre-Vacation Russo's trip?

Thanks for the advice. Mushroom ravioli sounds yummy.

Pre-Vacation Russo's trip?

I am planning on hitting Russo's in preparation for a Cape house rental. I would like to buy some cheese, maybe some homemade pasta, certainly produce (though I don't think I need recs on that), maybe some baked goods, prepared foods?.... I would love some specific recommendations! Thanks so much

Baffled by the in laws this weekend

I would stay away from places where there is risk of you being the loudest table. I would also stay away from places that are too cramped. I would say a big no to Harvest. Henrietta's Table might work. Oleana....no. Eastern Standard would be a good choice, Maggianos, Legals or Summer Shack would work. Joes on the waterfront has a nice outdoor area and is kid-friendly. We have taken well-behaved children to the Blue Room early in the evening with success.

Restaurants for octogenarians?

I might add Harvest, Sandrines, and Upstairs at the Square in Cambridge. In the South End, Icarus (though closing) may be a good choice as the tables are well-spaced out. The older folks in my family love Eastern Standard (not on game night) and The Blue Room.

Special occasion dinner with children suggestions?

We love taking our kids to Eastern Standard. They love the food and the atmosphere feels festive.

Nicest possible dining with infant

In my experience, louder restaurants are better with kids. We have had success with Estern Standard and Sel de la Terre. Maybe Via Matta would work too?

Newtonville/West Newton lunch rec needed

Is Ariadne open for lunch? That might be a good option and it's right in Newtonville.

Potato Dumpling in Tsimmis?

Thanks so much- the grated potato one is close to what I used but I will save this one for the next time. The grated onion would have been a nice touch.

Potato Dumpling in Tsimmis?

Thanks so much. I ended up finding a Joan Nathan one that I used (said it was an old recipe from Vilna which would be about right) but it had much more flour than I remember. In the oven now so we shall see!

Potato Dumpling in Tsimmis?

I know this is reaching a bit, but I am trying to create my (late) grandmother's tsimmis recipe. There are white potato dumplings that you throw in during cooking, using grated potato, a little oil....then my notes get vague.... either soaked bread or matzo meal or flour.. salt and I think that's it. I have never found a similar recipe with these dumplings. Has anybody ever heard of somthing like this? Does anyone have a recipe for these potato dumplings? Thanks so much.

Wellfleet and Vicinity Recs

You probably already know about Macs- we like to go to the one on the harbor. Mac's Shack has good food but the service can be slow. There is a place on Rt 6- PJs?- that has good fried fare. We just heard about a pizza and ice cream place in Truro that is supposed to be good. Totally agree on Finely JPs though we have never been to the Bookstore. I am compiling similar research for our annual trip so am interested to hear other recommendations.

hip sf friends in town, cool lunch spot tomorrow?

If you want to come to the Back Bay, Vlora is a good deal for lunch, and Parish Cafe can be fun.

Western suburbs of Boston

Farm Grill on Needham Street in Newton has good Greek food. It would be a good place to eat alone, or take out. It is a counter service sort of place.

Group of 8... short notice

The Blue Room would be another good option in Kendall

Picnic provisions: Boston, Cambridge, Belmont, Arlington, Watertown

How about Russo's in Watertown? Take the Pike to exit 17, swing by Russo's, then from there it is an easy shot to Belmont.

Back Bay lunch spot?

I went to Vlora last week during lunch for the first time. They have $8 lunch specials, or you can order off the menu. I had the grilled octopus as mentioned many times on the board, and loved it. All the food was fresh and yummy.

Cupcake Outrage in Back Bay

We picked up a few to try at the office yesterday.... none of us liked them. I tried a white cupcake with chocolate frosting. The white cake was nearly flavorless, almost as if it was missing an ingredient. It also didn't taste moist or fresh. The chocolate frosting was better but had more of a whipped consistency than Party Favors frosting, which is more grainy (I am not a professional baker so these are unprofessional terms). I prefer the grainy. The frosting would have benefitted from more pronounced chocolate flavor. All in all, we were disappointed and will continue to purchase from Party Favors when we need cupcakes for office events.

Roadhouse Barbeque to replace Vinny T's

....and before it was Walter's it was Novak's, I think. I used to go to Walter's all the time with my grandparents. It was that sort of place. I think it is stretching it to call Walter's a wine bar, though. It definitely had that old-school, "continental" 1970s feel.

Good Old-School Italian/Pizza Restaurant?

Francesca's on Adams Street in Newton is pretty old school. The food is yummy, if a little pricey for what it is. I have never had the pizza but other posters have said it is good. Fiorella's in Newton may also fit the bill.

coffee shop in w. newton?

There are 3-4 tables there. Midweek, it would be fine to hang out there for an hour.

coffee shop in w. newton?

In Newtonville, quite nearby, there is a coffee shop on Walnut (forget the name), a Starbucks, and Bread and Chocolate (my recommended choice).
