Hainanese Chicken (and all its variations)

Malay Thai in First Markham Place used to do a fairly good version, but I haven't been there in ages.

The strangest location you have ever had a meal at/in and what was it?

Believe me, I've ordered it time and time again all over Thailand and Malaysia (where I grew up). It's just never the same. Something about that temple...

Oh my, you just brought back a memory. I remember visiting a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai back when I was maybe around 8 years old. The monks were breaking for lunch and usually, visitors wouldn't be invited to partake, but for some reason, we were that day (I truly don't remember why and it certainly never happened any other time we visited). The food in the temple was donated and nothing out of the ordinary, but there was one fish dish that haunts me to this day. It was, IIRC, a lightly fried pomfret with spicy soy sauce - not sure what else was in it. I've since asked my mom and aunt, who were there, if they remembered the dish, but they have no idea what I'm talking about.

Now everytime I see something on a menu that could fit the description, I order it. And I've even tried making it at home. But it never recaptures that amazing taste that lingers in the back of my mouth.

DO YOU EAT CAKE OVER THE SINK?

My mother-in-law eats over the sink, regardless of what she is eating or the hour. It's strange to me because she will do this rather than sit down to eat with the rest of us. The other strange habit is that she leaves the water running most of the time while she is at the sink, which I think goes hand-in-hand with an obsession for washing (fruits out of the fridge are washed until they are room-temperature). I've asked my DH about all of this - he shrugged and told me 'that's just mama'. But all that water!!

Say what?? Cooking comments that baffle you

I usually order my steak 'medium rare, on the rare side' because that's how I'd like them to err, if they do err. I'd much rather eat a rare steak than a medium one. :P

Funniest thing you seen in a restaurant?

I was in a similar siting situation, but opposite my better half, elbow-to-elbow next to a couple who had clearly just started dating. It was somewhat awkward because the lady carried most of the conversation while the gentleman constantly fiddled with his phone. Half way through, she reached across to interrupt his texting to caress both his shoulders and said with a purr, 'I love your shoulders. They are so masculine. You're so manly.' to which, he didn't respond and continued texting. I hope it worked out for them, but I admit, at the time, I was dying pretending not to hear them and also resisting to comment on my better half's shoulders.

Weird/Bad Food Related Dates

I don't assume the guy should pay. But if either party insists immediately that the bill be split down to the cent, it's usually a bad indicator of what's to come.

Are you more prone to suggest a fine dining restaurant as opposed to cheap/diry?

Point taken.

To clarify I meant cheap OR dirty. Didn't mean to imply that the two always go hand-in-hand

Oh for sure, I agree that the two do not go hand-in-hand.

I have noticed that when someone (esp a close friend) is asking about suggestions for good eats in my city, I generally think about higher-end restaurants. I then over-correct and end up not recommending anything at all. Meanwhile, on a regular basis I will eat-at/take-out from absolutely ghetto and shady establishment.

Has anyone done the same? And also, is it in one's best interests to only recommend restaurants with *amazing* food and *great* service. Esp if you know the person and might lose credibility?

Duggans is closed (permanently)

Oh that's really too bad. I love the duck poutine as well. A few weeks ago, DH wanted to go, but I was too lazy - I regret that now!

M&M's has some breaded chicken wings. They are fully cooked, then frozen. Just toss in the oven.

When are regular breadcrumbs better to use than Panko?

When it needs to be mixed into something like a meatball or meatloaf?

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #5 - 01/05/11 (Spoilers)

I don't remember any of the translations as being inaccurate. But I'm fairly sure that they only televised the relatively polite comments. Believe you me, older Chinese food are NOT amused when you mess with their dim sum. I once brought a family friend to a dim sum that did a few 'fusion' dishes (think truffle, foie gras) - it was certainly not appreciated. lol.

Do you leave a sympathy tip when someone in your party is rude?

LOL. Yeah... I really don't think that was the case. It really did say on his printout that the pizza was meant for our table. Poor guy was just delivering the pizza, don't think he cared too much who the pizza went to, hetrosexual or otherwise.

Do you leave a sympathy tip when someone in your party is rude?

Your post made me remember one dining occasion. A pizza that wasn't ours was mistakenly delivered to us. I knew immediately it wasn't ours and told the food server so (not our waiter) - the table next to us was 2 young ladies, one of who said, "Hey, isn't that our pizza?" At this point the server was asking us if we were sure it wasn't our pizza because the printout he had said it was for us. No 2 of the other table then exclaimed, "Hey!! That's our pizza!" The server rechecked the printout he had and asked us again to be sure. No 2 again said loudly, "That's OUR pizza."

Finally, he dropped the pizza off at the other table, totally flustered. Shortly after, our mutual waiter returned and the other table insisted on speaking to the manager. When he got there, No 2 complained that the food server was 'incredibly rude' and 'totally inexcusable'. She made such a huge deal of it, you would think the server dumped the pizza all over her lap.

I didn't want to comment while the other table was still next to us. By time they left, DH was dying to ask to me what the big deal was, since as far as he could tell, it was a minor issue. As I was trying to explain the fuss (quite unsuccessfully), the food server was cleaning the next table and asked us, alarmed, "Is everything ok?" We assured him everything was just fine. He sighed a huge sigh of relief and explained that he got written up for the last table (he would get fired after 2 write-ups).

At the end of our meal, before we paid our bill, we told our waiter to relay to the manager that the server was really not to be blamed and the situation was not as dire as had been described.

Kenzo on Bloor

I just wanted to add my add my thumbs up to this new location. I love the Kenzo on Dundas, but it is usually so cramped in there. The new place is a lot more spacious. And the ramen was equally as yummy.

Driving south on I-15

The advice has been interesting and informative. I was hoping that there would be a smallish town I could hit along the way, but I suppose not. Good thing I didn't try to wing it!

Thanks everyone!

I'm hoping for some last minute help. I'm going to be driving down the I-15 from the strip to the outlet mall near the state line. Are there any good food finds along the way? I'm in particular looking for small diners or other family style places. I don't mind detouring a little bit. Thanks in advance for your help.

Edit to clarify: I'm heading to the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas. Is there anything close by there?

Smokin' Bones Closed?

It looks deserted. Totally empty on the inside safe for a a few scattered cardboard boxes and a beer bottle.

I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't try it, at least.
