Four Days in Northern Nevada: Where to Eat?

Thanks!

It's OK. I know you're not stalking me. And yes, Nevada is a small state where everyone has connections to just about everyone else.

I was thinking about doing Santa Fe anyway, so that will probably stay on my "short list" of places to eat. I was also thinking about trying Adele's in Carson, since they're somewhat famous (for both the food and the legendary politician-lobbyist dealmaking lunches) I was thinking that might be worth a try.

Dinners finalised, now what about lunches?

If you're already doing BLT, Holstein's at Cosmo may be "burger overkill". If not, then definitely do it. But if so, then China Poblano at Cosmo is also a solid lunch option.

Four Days in Northern Nevada: Where to Eat?

I will be in Northern Nevada for four days starting this Saturday, and I'm wondering what's worth trying while I'm up north. I'll be in Reno on Saturday, then possibly Tahoe on Sunday, then Carson City Monday and Tuesday. So where should I go? Any "must eat" destinations in each locale?

I'll likely do dinner out in Reno on Saturday, then I may have lunch at Tahoe on Sunday, then I'll probably have one "free night" in Carson to go out.

Jaleo vs. Firefly

Yes, it really is an apples-to-oranges situation. Jaleo aims for authentic Spanish tapas. Firefly is more "American style tapas". Jaleo is a top notch Strip establishment. Firefly caters more to a local audience.

Vegas on a budget

Well, you may be in luck then. If you enjoy good Chinese food, then Ping Pang Pong is right at your casino!

http://www.goldcoastcasino.com/dining...

And just down Valley View is Chinatown, stretching along Spring Mountain Road. Here you'll find some of the best and most authentic Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai food there. China Mama is definitely a good option there. And for ab fab Japanese gastropub fare, Raku is the best of the bunch.

Alex (The Wynn) is closing on 1/15/11

Yep, it's tragic to see Wynn's culinary reputation collapse in this last year & a half. It was sad enough that Encore's restaurant lineup wasn't too exciting (save Sinatra & Society IMHO), then Wynn lost Daniel Boulud really hit me hard (it was my fave brasserie at the time), and now Alex will be shuttered. Wynncore really is losing its culinary street cred.

Thanks for sharing! I'm even MORE excited about China Poblano now. I can't wait to try it when I get home!

SF hound going to be in Vegas soon - suggestions for places to eat?

If you're heading to Lake Mead, stop by Ethel M's Henderson factory on the way back!

Not only can you see the factory and grab some chocolate goodness...

Arrival Night Dinner

Really??!! I'm surprised. I guess I'll have to give them another visit after the holidays to do some "quality control". I've never had a bad meal there, so I'll be saddened immensely if standards are slipping.

Actually, the Bellagio outpost that I NEVER recommend is Olives. I detest that place. Ever since my last lunch there, one devoid of flavor from start to finish, I've run as far away as I could from that turista trap.

And don't get me started on Mesa Grill.

Well, at least we seem to agree on Bradley Ogden. I've always considered it one of the most underappreciated gems of The Strip. It isn't too expensive (they have a $59 prix fixe menu, and even a $29 bar menu!), but they nonetheless deliver truly 4 star caliber dishes in a cozy and welcoming environment.

The Cosmo, Fleur, etc.

I'm probably most excited about China Poblano, Scarpetta, and Milos coming to town. China Poblano is actually a new, first-in-Vegas concept (!!!), while Milos offers something (fine, authentic Greek dining) that we haven't seen in Vegas before. And while there are already scores of Italian restaurants all over town, I still can't wait to try Scarpetta's house-made pasta!

meatless on the strip

Bradley Ogden at Caesars and Sage at Aria have great vegetarian options on their menus. Michael Mina at Bellagio has a full vegetarian tasting menu. And thanks to Steve Wynn's recent conversion, all Wynn and Encore restaurants now have vegetarian AND vegan menus!

Got to second Rao's at Caesars. Another good idea is Sinatra at Encore. Both serve great grub that's perfect for the holidays.

Are there any local egg/dairy farms around Las Vegas?

Here are some local farms...

And if you don't want to drive too far out of town, you can always do the farmers' market Mario Batali trusts.

Moderately Priced Dinner Suggestion for Mixed Company of Foodies and Non-Foodies

See if you can get a big table at La Cave. It's a great new "Modern American style" tapas bar at Wynn... But don't fear, they have reasonably priced entree sized dishes as well.

Off The Strip in Southern Highlands is probably your best bet...

Great "upscale neighborhood diner" not too far from The 15. Beyond The M, there's nothing. Really. Nothing.

Vegas Report: Picasso

As I said in my review, Picasso doesn't really do "novelty" food. However, I do think the quality of the ingredients, the immaculate attention to detail, and the boldness of the flavors sets the food there (FAR!!!) apart from the likes of Andre's and Eiffel Tower. I actually do think it deserves to be in The Top 5 with Robuchon, Savoy, Alex, and Twist for these reasons... As well as the top notch service and unique ambiance.

I guess we define "Best" and "Top 10" differently. And that's OK. The beauty of our fine dining scene here in Las Vegas is that there are so many great restaurants to choose from.

Best bagel I've found outside New York is in Las Vegas

I live fairly close to Weiss, and it's been growing on me in the last year. My first lunch here just over a year ago wasn't all that great, but perhaps that was just a bad day. Every time since then, the food's been solid. And the bagels are especially good.

Not necessarily. I think there would be some sort of drop-off in a "Bay Area Top 10" list, and in both places I would say the Top 5-7 are fractions apart.

Vegas Report: Joel Robuchon

"I think part of the "charm" of the flagship Robuchon restaurant is the pomp and circumstance"

Same here. Robuchon is one of the very few restaurants (not just here, but anywhere) where I truly feel like royalty by just stepping inside. I'm also hoping to go again next year... Maybe during Vegas Uncork'd?

Have fun!

I can see where you're coming from. If one doesn't care too much for the "pomp and circumstance" of The Mansion, then L'Atelier is always next door (and nowhere near as expensive!). I still want to go back soon, but I think it would ruin the special experience of Joel Robuchon at The Mansion if I were to dine there regularly.

I'm sorry about that. That sucks...

But I remember there was a solo diner when I was there last Friday, and they gave him a good table with fountain views. Again, service last week at Picasso was impeccable IMHO.

Breakfast Off The Strip

Simon at Palms is without a doubt the best you'll find off Strip. Kerry Simon takes classic comfort food and gives it a fun gourmet spin.

And if you can, do Sunday Brunch there. It's a bit pricier, but totally worth it IMHO!

Vegas Report: Spago

Still the one for ab fab, gourmet California style pizza, reworked Vegas style! I had to stop at Spago recently for a lunch break during my "Black Friday" shopping, and I just had to order my fave mushroom pizza. It's obviously still my favorite!

I also tried the pumpkin bread pudding for dessert, and I was amazed by the complex pumpkin and spice flavors, the rich custard interacting so well with the hearty bread, and the delectable vanilla creme anglaise and house made ice cream that went so perfectly with the pudding.

All in all, another great lunch at what may be my favorite lunch spot on The Strip!

Vegas Report: La Cave (New Tapas Bar at Wynn)

Yesterday, I decided I might as well try out Wynn's new tapas bar for late lunch/early dinner. And hey, why not? It's already getting plenty of buzz, and I was already getting mighty hungry.

And thank goodness curiosity got the best of me! I started off with the Buttermilk Bleu Cheese plate, and a lovely wedge of this stinky goodness arrived alongside toasted mini baguette slices and fig jam. For some reason the bread was at room temperature, but that was quickly forgiven when I dove into the heavenly cheese paired with that divine fig jam! (Hopefully in the future, they'll make fresh batches of toasted baguette.)

From there, it was onto my pizza... err, "flatbread". I ordered a flatbread with roasted tomatoes, micro mozzarella, and capers, which is essentially a pizza margherita shaped more rectangularly, and with the basil swapped out in favor of the capers. But whatever one wants to call it, one can't deny it's tasty! The roasted tomatoes were sweet and tangy, and the salty capers provided the perfect balance and contrast. The mozzarella melted beautifully, and the crust was soft and pillowy. This definitely makes my "Top 10 Pizzas in Vegas" list!

And of course, what good meal is complete without dessert? I couldn't help myself, I HAD to try the "American Chocolate Cake". And trust me, if you're the kind of American who can never get enough chocolate, you'll LOVE this cake! Actually, there's a thin layer of cake hidden somewhere in the midst of a beautiful mold of chocolate mousse covered in chocolate ganache. Oh, and there's a thin chocolate wafer cookie on the bottom. And oh my, this was so perfectly sweet and smooth and creamy that I had to hold myself back from licking the plate!

All in all, my first impression of La Cave was quite strong. Again, my one small quibble was over the toasted baguette, and that can easily be fixed. Otherwise, the food was terrific, service was strong, and I'll likely be back soon to take full advantage of their wine list!

Vegas state of things question.

Ha! Good ideas.

And as a Vegas local, I LOVE visiting my favorite Strip restaurants and trying new dining experiences. Since I live so close to so much culinary greatness, why shouldn't I take full advantage of it?

For me, mediocre chains and mediocre holes in the wall just don't excite me. While I do like finding new, exciting neighborhood holes in the wall, there frankly aren't very many here in Henderson, so that's just even more reason for me to take full advantage of the great restaurants on The Strip.

Vegas Report: Joel Robuchon

I'm so sorry! I guess this happens. Honestly, my experience at Joel Robuchon earlier this year was nothing short of phenomenal. However, I've heard some sad stories of mediocre meals there. Maybe they just have the occasional "bad days" like most other restaurants... But at their price point, there are NO excuses for "bad days".

I don't think it will be a problem. Picasso's staff was very accommodating, and there are some small tables near the windows that you'll probably be able to snatch.
