Subway made 2 mistakes that are destroying its business

I seldom find myself in a subway, but sometimes in rural NH or Maine the Subway in a gas station is the only "restaurant" around. I also don't like the smell of the stores but while not very good, the bread isn't as bad as the scent of it cooking might make one think. I like D'Angelo for a chain sub.

My complaint is that if you go in and say, "I want the special, limited time sandwich on the poster" they ask, "What do you want on it?" If you say,
I want it however it comes, they insist that you need to make order your custom sandwich step by step. This has happened over many years and locations so it is not a one-time glitch.

My thought is that they had designers create the special new sandwich and the one on the poster and the TV must have some set combination of ingrediants.

How long do you keep sour cream, once it's been opened?

I think, according to George Carlin, you can keep it until it goes good.

No-knead bread -- I'm confused!

I've successfully made this in a square Corningware cornflower casserole with lid, in a Danske large casserole/dutch oven (not heavyweight) and a regular old metal handled spagetti pot w/lid.

How do you repurpose lumpy pancakes?

Soak them in hot dog water. Once pancakes are thoroughly dissolved, use the liquid for your favorite hot dog water purpose.

Thanksgiving with a small single oven

Someone below mentioned they could only fit a 14lb turkey in their small oven. I suggest going as far as measuring the oven and the turkey beforehand so you don't end up hacking off pieces at the last minute trying to make it fit.

Rule #1...always...

Remember to put the bag lunch for work into your tote so you don't have to break into the emergency supply stale crackers in the back of the desk drawer for sustenance.

Yogurt in potatoes?

I use yogurt instead of sour cream all the time. It is great with potatoes. You may want to strain it in a coffee filter for a while to drain some extra whey to get to the same consistency.

Surar-free cake??? icing?? and no dyes??

I have used well drained fat free vanilla Stonyfield Farm yogurt as frosting on carrot cake and ginger bread. That might be good with your cake. There is sugar in it but not a pound.

"Pomme reading"

My favorite, Cortland, is not listed but they nailed Red Delicious. Growing up that was the only apple I knew of and, while I ate them, I never craved them. I could happily eat apples every day given all the locally grown varieties and the plethora available in the grocery store.

"while eating a portion of white fish such as cod or halibut every other day can improve it". I suspect that the guys who eat fish every other day may lead generally healthier lifestyles.

When does a salad become a "meal" unto itself?

Oops. I must be a TV chef in my other life.

bored with my cut up baked chicken in sauce recipes, could use some help

I often bake the chicken in Frank's hot sauce for a Buffalo flavor. Many people use margarine in wings so if it is too spicy you could cut it with that. If Frank's is not kosher, chowhounders on the kosher board might have a good substitute to recommend. We also do it in soy sauce or Italian dressing.

When does a salad become a "meal" unto itself?

In the summers I have a good size container garden with tons of cherry tomatoes, various lettuces and other greens, herbs and usually a few other small things. When it is hot and I am alone I often decide to take a bowl downstairs and fill it up. When back in the kitchen I do a quick chop to the herbs, add dressing and chow down. I might add some olives, croutons or cheese. I like the simplicity and ease of it. I don't think I have ever planned my shopping around a salad.

When does a salad become a "meal" unto itself?

I was thinking, "When that's all I eat." But that sounds kind of snarky so I will go with the state of mind option. If. I have a salad out for a meal it usually does have meat or tuna but at home it is just my regular greens, herbs and whatever else I have. There is plenty of protien in my diet so I don't consider it a requirement for every meal.

I guess that isn't the same level of crime as making sandwiches with the bread misaligned. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/530873

When did we start calling ingredients "proteins"?

I was just wondering if "people" are using it in a general sense. It seems to me that unless related to planning and diet it is just TV chefs/cooks who say it.

Suggestions for food and cooking shows on youtube, etc!

A Love Supreme is a short film which is one of the most beautiful I have seen. The film maker documents his mother making samosas before her arthritis gets to the point that she can no longer do it. Make sure to have the speakers on; though there is no speaking, the sounds are key.

Here are two links. The video and a bit of commentary.

Where to eat in Chinatown on a Sunday night?

Dumpling Cafe gets my vote. They are open late every night and I agree they have the best XLB (soup dumplings) we love the crab and pork.

They offer rice plates and combos which include many options. http://www.dumplingcafe.com/dumplingc...

Sadly, I'll probably never eat it again...

Alas, a New Jersey hard roll will likely never pass my lips again. There is no such animal in New Hampshire where I live now. From reading the Lamentations of other chowhounders, I conclude that they are hard to find down there now too.
