El Pollito Mexicano @ 5th and Sterling - park slope
they were closed for what seemed like 48 hours maximum,
one night the italian restaurant awning came down, and the mexican restaurant awning went up.
and, the next day, it was a mexican restaurant.
it almost seems as if maybe the ownership/staff didn't even change?
El Pollito Mexicano @ 5th and Sterling - park slope
I noticed this morning that the awning at the Italian restaurant at 5th and Strerling (which I believe was called something like 'Trattoria Mangia') had been replace (seemingly overnight) with a sign that reads "El Pollito Mexicano".
The graphics on the awning look an awful lot like it's another "Los Pollitos" restaurant.
It seems weird that they would be opening another (most likely mediocre) Los Politos restaurant one block away from the existing Los Politos II (and directly next door to Bogota Latin Bistro), but who knows....
Anyone have any info?
Fornino Park Slope
Maybe this has been discussed, but I couldn't find a thread.
I noticed today that a Fornino is opening in the old Tempo/Tempo Presto spot on 5th Ave.
I've never tried their Williamsburg spot, but I feel like I've heard good things.
Should I be excited about this?

Calexico in Brooklyn
this is probably a stupid question, but i'm assuming this place has nothing to do with the calexico on 5th ave in park slope, right?
Lucali is a Tourist Trap.
sounds a little like the original poster accidentally ended up at grimaldi's and thought they were at lucali.
Best bowl of noodles in Park Slope
not super close to the park, but in the neighborhood: zuzu ramen on 4th ave.
i'm sure there have been reviews here, probably somewhat mixed, but still probably one of the best bowl of noodles youre going to get in the hood.
Indonesian Food Bazaar in Elmurst this Sun, 7/19
is this a one time deal?
a monthly event?
will there be another opportunity to check it out?
Pizza-deprived in Canada seeking best pizza in Brooklyn . . . Help!
lucali.
definitely lucali.
definitely over franny's.
New wine bar on Union....Bussaco
i think there is a garage right across the street.
not sure about $$ though.
Zuzu Ramen on 4th Ave. - open yet?
sign on the door says they open today.
i'm excited to try their mini pork buns.
Zuzu Ramen on 4th Ave. - open yet?
not as of last night.
incidentally, i did a little research and found out its being opened by the same people who opened sheep station.
di faras is closed till february
i have a bad feeling about this. like, a "he's never going to reopen" kind of bad feeling. i know when he was injured a couple years ago, there was talk that he may never reopen.
let's hope that he is able to fully recover.
(for his sake, and for our own selfish reasons)
Maria's, i mean Mercado Social, i mean Maria's
yeah, im confused....
when it became mercado social, their signs proclaimed something like "same owners but new partnership",
now their signs proclaim "maria's is back, same owner!"
so, i'm not sure if it was the same owners all along and continues to be so, or if there were 'kind of' new partial owners for awhile, but now have gone back to original owners, or something else all together.
Maria's, i mean Mercado Social, i mean Maria's
walked past Mercado Social, formerly Maria's Mexican Cafe, on Union street yesterday and noticed that after only a couple weeks (?) they have changed their name/menu/awning back to Maria's.
Seems like this place is having an identity crisis.
Personally, I thought that Maria's started out good, but definitely went downhill.
I thought the new Mercado menu made more sense and was more "focused" and that the food was better,
but I guess after a very short time, they decided to go back to Maria's.
i think the real problem with this place is that it is so aesthetically uninviting from the outside. you cant see into the main dining room, so all passerbys see if they look into the main entrance is a small, empty "annex" dining room. the lack of good signage, windows, lighting etc. is their real problem.
Kif (the old Liquors)
my experience at Kif was like so many of my experiences at Ft. Greene restaurants in that area (including but not limited to Lulu, No. 7, Olea, etc.). It was fine. Food was ok. But for the price I paid, I really dont see myself ever rushing back there anytime in the near future.
Baluchi's Indian Just Opened on 5th Ave. btwn 2d and 3rd
they dropped a menu off at my place recently, and i noticed that it is exactly the same as the menu i used to have for an Amin in Ft. Greene, down to their "one app, one entree" deal and the description of items (something like: "too difficult to explain, but try it you'll love it").
I know there are several Amins.
they seem to have an empire of mediocre Indian places.
is Baluchis somehow associated with Amin?
Di Fara--first visit trip report
welcome to the world of di fara's.
i always make sure i order a "specific" pie, ie. half plain, half mushrooms, etc.,
that way its pretty clear it is my pie when it comes out of the over and no one else can try to claim it or dom doesn't just decide to cut it into slices and hand them out.
Trout closed
and, what about all the other restaurants they own in that little "complex" (pacifico, the pizza place, etc.)?
did they close as well?
Prix Fixe Menus in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene, and surroundings
surprised no one has mentioned palo santo. great price fixe dinner. pretty cheap. lots of food. sit at the bar and watch the chef prepare it for you.
Al di la in Park Slope?
their pastas are great. i think the menu changes pretty regularly, but last time i was there, i had some amazing raviolis. one had beets in it, and the other corn. both very good.
just a heads up if youve never been, be prepared to wait.
30-60 min.
but, they have a nice wine bar where you can hang out.
al di la is open for lunch
very interesting.
it'd be great if they did a brunch on the weekends.
Delicious on the Slope
i'm happy to report that they are reopening tomorrow.
i walked in tonight and peeked in.
i couldnt see much, but it didnt look particularly different.
not sure if the menu has changed, etc.
anyway, they told me they were opening tomorow.
Lookout Hill Closed?
i walked by the other day and there was a sign that said something like "Deliveries for Playa's Cuban Joint" please use door around the corner.
so, it seems like this is going to become a horribly named Cuban restaurant of some sort.
I never made it to Lookout Hill for dinner, but I did go for brunch once, and it was actually very good.
too bad.
How have the lines at Difara been?
when i go on weekends or when it's busy, i make sure i order a "specific" pie (half pepperoni, etc.).
i prefer good old sauce and cheese, but i have found that when i just order a plain pie, that when he pulls it out, some yahoo tries to claim it or he forgets who its for and starts serving it as slices, etc.
Fish tacos in Park Slope?
I'll probably get pooped on by hounders for saying this and it's not really in park slope, but I always liked the fish tacos (sauteed not fried) at pequena, on the ft Greene/park slope border.
New to Carroll Gardens, what's good fellow hounds?
definitely try Lucali (pizza).
and zaytoons (middle eastern) is consistently delicious in my opinion and good for delivery.
there's a nice little wine bar on union, on the park slopeish edge of carroll gardens but i cant remember the name or the cross street. nice in the winter when they get the fireplace going.
and, if you want to check out your neighborneighborhood, al di la is worth the 15 minute walk.
Top 2 Pizza Places In NYC - Zagat
Lucalli isn't exactly 'new', but it is great, probably #2 after DiFara.
