Kuala Lumpur - Dim sum hits-and-misses at the Mandarin Palace
Have you been to shang palace? I love that place a lot. Arguably one of the better dim sum restaurants in kl. :) That place serves pork if you like your dim sum with pork.
Each time I head back to kl ( i suffer from dim sum deprivation when in melbourne ), i MUST go to shang palace to get my dim sum fix.
Their ala carte dishes are very good too. Hehe.
Some of my favorites:

The only thing that I can find fault from shang palace is their chinese desserts. I don't mind their shanghai red bean pan cake and the chilled stuff they make but the red bean dessert is abominable. Haha.
Consistency wise, out of the 10 times I dine, there would be 1 time where there would be an error but they are happy to redo your dish and make it properly. :)
I know this cos I must go there at least twenty times before i head back to melbourne.
Another place that I find decent is chynna at hilton kl. They are quite creative with their dim sum and their desserts are superb. However, consistency wise, it is up and down. Like if I were to go there 10 times, 6 would be good, 4 times would be just so-so.
Anyway, i heard lots about singapore. i'm envious that you guys have so many good restaurants. I saw iron chef's post on the best dim sum places!! Made my mouth water at the sight of it! My friend keep persuading me to go over to singapore but I keep hesitating.
Sigh sigh sigh!
Going to HK... again!
Hello there, I made a rez for 8 1/2. I was impressed by the reviews at open rice. The pictures are good enough to make me hungry!
Will tell you what i think about it when i actually dine there!
Chowdown in Singapore
If you happen to organize anything between dec to feb, put me in the list too cos i am interested. :) haha. i am studying in melbourne but i would be back in kl between dec to feb. :)
Kuala Lumpur - Dim sum hits-and-misses at the Mandarin Palace
uh, not because of the halal factor. the dim sum came out cold as well. my mom prefers dim sum without pork because this means that there will be more seafood/mushrooms and it really tests the dim sum master's skills. :)

ah okay...sorry misread it! LOL! i was reading the review but not the address. T_T
Kuala Lumpur - Dim sum hits-and-misses at the Mandarin Palace
My parents dislike the dim sum here. They felt that for a place like mandarin oriental, they should have done better.
Anyway, you should have headed to shang palace instead. :)
The best KL has to offer.
My parents' friends enjoy el cerdo too. My mom can't wait to go there. hehe.
Going to HK... again!
I don't eat beef so the brisket stuff might not work.
I actually have been using openrice for my first two trips but I want to listen from others as well. Hehe. :) Also using chowhound is more convenient. I can narrow my list down easily.
Not too interested in ippudo... but BUTAO. BRING IT ON! 1 hour wait? What am I going to do?
Going to HK... again!
Also, continuing from the other post... When you said Hoi King Heen, is it for Dim sum or ala carte?
Kuala Lumpur - Incredibly Spicy Noodles from Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee (建記辣椒板麵)
ah, okay, i get what you mean now. sorry.
Kuala Lumpur - Incredibly Spicy Noodles from Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee (建記辣椒板麵)
actually, most famous pan mee stalls in kl seem to have severe characters!

ah i get it now!
Hong Kong help!!!
i went there on jan 2011. i felt that it was really nice. :) not sure about mira that's why i asked whether i should go to the one at mira or ifc this time round. I went for dim sum lunch. Not dinner. We got super good service as well and my parents and i were very surprised. we ordered most of their signature dishes and ate quite a bit of dim sum.
I read about the comments written about IFC but they are dated 2009?
Also what's special at lei garden?
And for me, Michelin stars are sometimes confusing...
Going to HK... again!
Between chuen kee and loaf on, why would you prefer the latter? :) Any reason I should?
I will look up on tin lung heen. hehe
Going to HK... again!
No Bo innovation. Although one of my chef friends told me about it... no. I had enough of fusion stuff and i think that sometimes, it is well executed (leaving you thinking " ingenious!" or "awesome" or just downright awful (which leaves you wondering, "is this person trying to impress?", "this tastes weird".

Many of my friends, especially Singaporeans, do get a reaction from MSG laden meals. Especially restaurants that use low grade MSG. My mom and I are both sensitive to MSG as opposed to my dad and sis, so it's a good experiment going on there (Manipulated and control).
My mom used to work as a waitress and she learnt from the kitchens that different restaurants use different grade of MSG. There are some which are imported from Japan and some are made in China. If you get a reaction, there is a high chance that the restaurant is using low grade stuff. :)

No i'm talking about kin kin.
Hong Kong help!!!
Go to Cuisine Cuisine at IFC instead of LKH. I would say that LKH is DECENT but Cuisine Cuisine's dishes gave me a SPECIAL sensation.
Just saying. :)
Also lunch at Caprice if you can book a table. I recently sent a friend there and he loved it a lot. :)
The best KL has to offer.
Best dim sum place and Chinese: Shang Palace ( However, they do really bad hot Chinese desserts) and grand imperial, bangsar (the food here always get me addicted. Like I just can't stop eating. Their suckling pig and tea smoked duck is v. good but you must pre-order for the suckling pig if i'm not mistaken)
Best fusion: Sage (I prefer Sage over Cilantro)
Best Thai: Erawan
In my opinion, these three places are my MUST GO. Hehe.
Kuala Lumpur - Incredibly Spicy Noodles from Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee (建記辣椒板麵)
not my favorite place to go. the lady boss is horrible. Treated my entire family like crap. And i got msg bombed after my meal. :(
Going to HK... again!
Hello peeps,
I will be going to HK again and this would be, unfortunately, my third and final trip to HK as my parents are getting quite tired of going to HK every year and they want to go some place else. Not me though...
Anyway, I have some requests to ask from you chowhounders:
1. Can anyone recommend a good Japanese place in HK that specialize in sushi and ramen? Or any Japanese place that will guarantee blow my head off!
2. Do you think Tim Ho Wan is worth a visit. Some blogs have been singing praises about it but I'm very skeptical. Apparently, there is a new branch in IFC, I heard?
3. Laduree vs. Jean Paul Hevin vs. La Maison. Which one?
4. And my parents wanted to go to Sai Kung but I assume that Sai Kung must have lots of seafood restaurants. Do you guys have any preference? I don't want to fall into a tourist trap!
5. Cuisine Cuisine: Should I go to the IFC one or the one at Mira ( i will be staying at the Mira but I have tried the one at IFC and it left me a HUGE Impression. BTW, I think Cuisine Cuisine stuff is so much better than LKH!
6. There's this shop selling barbecued meat at the Central market near LKF. Should I go there?
7. Is T'ang Court worth going to?
8. Since it is my last visit, any places that I MUST GO? i.e. Italian cuisine etc?
Places that you should not recommend to me as I've been there before :
Yung Kee
Lan Fong Yuen
Crystal Jade
LKH
Caprice
Tai cheong
Tsim Chai kee
Fu Sing
Manor Seafood Rest.
Australia Dairy Company
Kam Wah Cafe
Tsui Wah LKF
Thanks thanks thanks!
HELP! Need good places to eat in Washington
Hello Chowhounders from Washington!
I'm from Australia and will be heading to Washington for a study trip. Food is not covered in my trip and as a person who loves really good food, I would love some recommendations!
I'll be staying in the American University during the trip. :)
I am open to any type of cuisine and don't have a budget but I would appreciate it if there's a mix of everything (casual to fine dining).
I'm relying on you guys!
Oh, and please tell me about the tipping system and whether I can make reservations for that place or not. :)
I prefer places within walking distance. Public transport would be fine. :D

HK trip in Jan 2011
Thanks for the comments! I'm sticking with Fu Sing, The Manor and Caprice at the moment. Even got the reservations done! Now all that is left is to find a good place to have wonton noodles, good afternoon tea and great xi mut nai cha. :D
HK trip in Jan 2011
Hello guys, I'm back from my long absence! Exams are over and since I have nothing to do, I've decided to create a list of places to eat when I'm in HK . I will be there for a week. :)
Places to eat:
1. Lau Sum Kee noodles - I read somewhere on Chowhound that the wonton noodles here are not bad.
2. T'ang Court, Langham - Heard that dim sum here is better than LKH.
3. Fu Sing, Wan Chai - Wanted to go there on the previous trip but got sick and stuck in the hotel. One of my blogger friends highly recommend the polo bun + char siu filling here.
4. Lin Heung Tea House - Saw this on openrice. Their Malay cake seems decent. I have a soft spot for Malay cakes (ma lai koh) but should I visit this place? http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=1868
5. Dai Kee, 384 Portland St, Prince Edward http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=17266 - Saw this on open rice. Thought that the food looks interesting.
6. Caprice, Four Seasons, 31968888 - I got advice from CharlesYu and another fellow chowhounder to pick this place over Robuchon.
7. Tai Cheong Bakery- egg tarts: Is this the only place in HK with good egg tarts? I prefer to have my egg tarts when I'm having dim sum.
8. Joy Hing Roasted Meat, 265-267 Hennesy Road, Wan Chai
9. The Manor, 440 Jaffe Road - Heard that the roast duck here is better than Yung Kee.
Are there any other places that I should consider going? I've been to Tsui Wah at Wellington, LKH, Crystal Jade at Harbour City Plaza, Kum Wah cafe for the PLB and Yung Kee, so I don't want any repeats.
Also, can anyone recommend some good breakfast places in TST?
