Salt cod in grocery SFV?

Most Whole Foods carry salted cod. I've purchased the pre-boxed salted cod and the loose salted cod from the seafood counter at several of of their stores.

Kitchen Aid Mixer Repair

Newman's fixed my K5 last year. Yes, the woman at the counter does not have the best command of the English language, but they were great and fixed my mixer in 1 day.

Short Ribs

Try Stater Brothers. I bought 15lbs last year to make Christmas dinner. I don't recommend buying them form the Asian market. The ones I found at 99 Ranch were mostly fat.

Santa Monica: Huckleberry or Bite Bakery.....?

Thanks for the link sel! I live across the street from Huckleberry, but find myself driving to Thyme a lot. The prices at Thyme are much more reasonable than Huckleberry.

They have great baked goods and salads and sandwiches are delicious as well.

Santa Monica: Huckleberry or Bite Bakery.....?

While I like Huckelberry and Bite, I think it's worthwhile to check out Thyme on Ocean Park next time.

Source for Shaoxing wine in or near Thousand Oaks?

Try the Asian section of Bristol Farms or Ralphs. I know the Ralphs in Santa Monica regularly carries it.

3 tier chinese steamer

An Asian grocery store will be the cheapest. Cost Plus, Sur La Table and Crate Barrel have them as well.

Dinner near UCLA or Disney concert hall for 60 teenage girls?

The pizza was great and they have tasty, fresh salads as well. The downtown location has an upstairs room, which was perfect for our group. Since the manager knew we had come from a volunteer project he sent out complimentary orders of burrata cheese and flatbread to all the tables. They really couldn't have been more gracious.

Dinner near UCLA or Disney concert hall for 60 teenage girls?

I recently participated in a volunteer project in Downtown LA and the 50+ volunteers had dinner at Pitfire Pizza. They were more than accomodating to our large group. They have locations in Downtown and in Westwood!

Need 1 more recommendation for a coffee shop/diner in Santa Monica

Here's a suggestion that I don't think anyone has thought of - Broadway Deli. At the entrance to the restaurant there is a casual seating area for people who are just having coffee or pastries. I usually see tourists occupying this area.

Large Group, Santa Monica Area, Informal for Mom's 80th Birthday

I would consider Joe's in Venice on Abbott Kinney or The Lobster in Santa Monica. They are what I think of when I hear you say "California".

Flourless Hazelnut Cake on the Westside

Some family friends used to always bring us a delicious flourless hazelnut cake, but would never reveal their source. I know that the bakery was located somewhere on the Westside. I have tried the one at Viktor Benes (Gelson's), but it was not the same...and too dry.

Does any one know where I can buy a great flourless hazelnut cake on the Westside? And...please I am not looking for flourless chocolate or looking for people to suggest I go to Angel Maid or Suzy Cakes, etc., and ask them to bake one for me. I am looking for a bakery that is known for their flourless hazelnut cake. Thanks!

Any good Spanish restaurants?

Avoid Cobras. It used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but it has gone way down hill over the past couple of months - smaller portions, higher prices and they basically took half of the items off their menu.

Poppyseeds on the Westside

Anyone have a good source for poppyseeds on the Westside. I know they are readily available in small jars at most sores, but I'm making a Hungarian poppyseed roll and need about 2lbs.

Best Russian Piroski in West Hollywood

I know there are numerous Russian bakeries in West Hollywood. Which has the best piroski/pirogi (baked savory pies)?

Cheap Challah on the Westside

Well, I just came back from my challah run. I ended up getting the challah at the Russian bakery near the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Fairfax (the one across the street from Whole Foods. Not the one next door to Whole Foods). The fresh challah was $2.50 and I managed to also pick up some day old challah for $1.75.

Looking for a good Churro.

I don't understand how this place manages to stay in business. I had a similar experience. The shop was empty and my freshly made Xooro was cold and hard. Honestly, the churros at Costco are far superior.

While some may argue that they are not authentic, my favorite churros are at Cobras & Matadors.

Duck's Feet at Dim Sum?

I don't know about the San Gabriel Valley, but the dim sum houses in Cerritos regularly serve them. If you're in the area try Happy House or Ten Ten.

Cheap Challah on the Westside

I am making large amounts of creme brulee french toast for Father's Day using challah. In the past I have purchased the challah from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods where each loaf can cost between $3 and $4.

I was wondering if the Jewish bakeries are cheaper. Since challah is usually sold for the Sabbath, do any of the Jewish bakeries sell it as "day old" on Saturday?

Longshot -- Downey Restaurant

Sal's was the owner of the original bakery at Florence and Paramount. Although it was called Sal's Bakery it was more than a bakery. It sold some imported items and had a deli counter as well.

Sal's son opened Buon Gusto - the place near Stewart & Gray and Paramount. It did have a small restaurant component in addition to the deli, imported foods and bakery.

I remember Sal decided to retire and closed his restaurant. Buon Gusto stayed open for awhile longer, but I don't know why they ended up closing. I was told the families still live in Downey.

Are you thinking of the place that was an offshoot of Sal's Bakery? Was it called "Buon Gusto" or something like that?
