KC BBQ, the best of the rest?

I take a long lunch there a couple times a month.

KC BBQ, the best of the rest?

I wouldn't walk across the street for Zarda. Wyandot on State Ave in KCK has great short ends. The one on 75th St is crap. Haywards used to be very good, not so much anymore. Gates on State Line in solid. BBQ Shack in Paola is well worth the drive.

Good Sipp'n Rum

Zaya, Ron Zacapa Centenario and Pampero Aniversario are my 3 favorites.

Bourdain in South Carolina

That was classic!

Lots of leftover pot roast potatoes

I would saute them with butter, garlic, and onions. Serve with some grilled steak or chops.

Tucson: butcher needed

In KC, Sam's has bone-in pork butts.

Authentic Italian in KC?

Try Garozzo's at 526 Harrison. It's my favorite Italian place.

Why are people so passionate about 'Q and their favorite BBQ Joints?

That sounds more like grilling than barbecue.

Why are people so passionate about 'Q and their favorite BBQ Joints?

The water pans in small home smokers are used to diffuse heat from the coals, not to provide a humid cooking environment. Many experienced users are putting sand in the water pan or replacing the pan with a clay flower pot base. The only time you might see wood being soaked in water is wood chips that are to be spread across coals when grilling. Wood chunks and logs are not soaked prior to being tossed into the coals.

And just for the record....if BBQ beef or pork is dry, it is overcooked.

All the places I don't get to go because I'm working? (KC)

BBQ Shack in Paola is well worth the drive.

KC- Quick report

I haven't been to SmokinGuns yet, but it's hard to beat LC's and BBQ Shack (in Paola) for burnt ends. Thanks for the tip on the triple BLT at The Peanut. I could live on BLTs in the summer.

KC hounds--Caliente's hours?

I wasn't able to get over there Wednesday. I'm shooting for one night this week.

Viking 48" dual fuel range--grill or griddle

I'd wager 99% of the anti-grill comments come from people that have been exposed to the horrible JennAir downdraft. The inefficient blower was rendered practically useless by poor installation in most I came across. A high CFM hood is necessary for an indoor grill. Get one with a remote blower and keep the motor noise outdoors.

your one kitchen design tip

Consumer Reports is an OK resource for low-mid level appliances. They don't know anything when it comes to testing and rating high-end appliances. Talking to users of equipment you are interested in is a much better way to get real information.

Food Processor with dual bowls

My KA has 3 bowls.

KC BBQ recommendations

I ate at BBQ Shack the first day FN was there. It was fun watching Guy interview some of the diners and the food was great.

KC BBQ recommendations

Both of Bryant's satellite locations are sub-par at best. Stick with the original. Lunchtime is the best time to go.

KC BBQ recommendations

Add one more to your list in case you are interested in the best burnt ends on the planet... the BBQ Shack in Paola. It's a 25 min drive from 151st and 69 Hwy.

Unique Guacamole Ideas?

Chopped fresh cilantro is always good in guac. I like to add 2T dijon mustard.

KC hounds--Caliente's hours?

I'm planning to go there this Wednesday. I'll get the hours and post them.

Grill Accessories

I use the Weber grill pan for veggies and fish all the time.

Dinner for 12-15 on the Plaza (KC)

You really can't go wrong with Capitol Grille.

Mexican Coke at Costco--how widespread is it?

Our grocery store in suburban KC sells it by the bottle, $1.69 ea.

NY Style pizza in KC?

When I'm at Oak Park Mall around 6pm picking up my daughter from work, I see many people leaving with pizza boxes only. Maybe I'll give this a shot tonight.

Your "go to" restaurant in KC?

We went to Kaiyo for the first time last night and it was tremendous. They have a fantastic spicy crab salad that's not on the menu. The Greenwich roll was our favorite. David asked me if I liked uni and I quickly turned up my nose. He said that I must not have ever had it fresh. Next thing I know a piece of uni is handed to me. Wow, it was very good and I'll order it next time. The service was friendly and quick. This just might surpass Kyoto as our "go to" sushi spot.

Eating in Kansas CIty Next Week

Make sure you go to the original Bryant's on Brooklyn. The 2 satellite locations suck.
