5 Whiskeys for Dad on Father's Day

Laphroaig quarter cask is awesome for peat/smoke lover as well as Ardbeg. Jura is good for those who like the lighter side and it is also around $40. Abelor 12 year is $35 and wonderful. Good ole Jim Beam rye is a decent rye at a bargain price. Remember the #1 rule of whisky," Does it suck or is it Canadian?"

Cavolo Nero (Black Kale)

A seed pack for under five bucks will supply you with a lot of kale. It grows like a weed and keeps on producing thriving on bad soil and neglect! Territorial seeds has a selection of different varieties.

Summer Shack

It is "girly" because of the Sav/Blanc, Elderflower liquour, lillet blanc. Manly might be Scotch, perhaps Bourbon ?

Eat Good Fish

Yes more like this! I just had pickled herring in mustard sauce tonight. From IKEA no less... The sardine sandwich looks great! I have arugula in the garden and a few cans of sardines! Perfect timing.

Onigiri at Clover Bakery in San Jose

You can also find these at Marukai in Cupertino. If you live in this area Marukai, and Maxim for other Asian ingredients (Haw flakes for my son) both are worth a visit.

Basic Savory Mochi (Age Mochi)

I like butter mochi a lot but it is best eaten the day it is made or the crispy parts get soggy. You can buy microwave mochi pans from Marukai I think they are around $6? I know butter mochi as Hawaiian local food not Japanese.

Kava Shake

I order Kava from Kona Kava farm online. Yes it tastes bad but I make it with only lecithin and water. It is bitter and tastes bad but the effects are very pleasant if you can get past the bitterness. It is great if you have sleep problems or muscle cramps. I think it is similar to a marijuana high for the body but with mental clarity. If you are a pot smoker and have to give it up for a drug test give this a try.

Mirin

Drinkable? Just buy sake or soju to drink. I have always thought as mirin as just a cooking wine. To add a little sweet to a sauce, marinade or dressing. I buy the cheap stuff or what is on sale. It is an ingredient I use quite a bit but never gave much thought to buy the best of. It is cheap sweet rice wine for cooking, its not fancy just Asian.

Spend more on sake or soju.

Raised bed for winter garden

I know the snap pea as a fall/winter veggie throws a lot of people. I live in the Bay area and it is mild enough. They take up some room so it might not be what you want to try with only one bed. Chard, kale, radish, beets, carrots all do fine unprotected, lettuce as well.
Check out the fall seeds at Territorial seeds.

Might as well fix the slant now and put it behind you if it is going to bug you?

Raised bed for winter garden

It should be fine if it is on a slight slope. If you are worried maybe put some landscape fabric on the low side( inside the bed) and add dirt on top of it? What are you going to grow? I am lucky and can grow veggies threw the winter in Ca. I just started kale, snap peas, chard, lettuce carrots, and beets.

Dim Sum

We take my son to Dim Sum a lot. He is 4 and has a few favorites. The "fun" ( a white sheet of noodle) wrapped around 4 shrimp, the turnip cake, Sue mai(pork dumpling) and Don Tat( little egg custards)That is about it for him. If the place has a fish tank ask to sit near it as toddlers love it for entertainment. Bring his milk or what ever and put it in one of the tea cups. They love acting just like adults drinking tea.

Dim sum is easy, when you are out of tea. Open the tea pot and they will re fill it for you. When the carts come around its a simple yes or no. They will load you up till you tell them you are done. When you are ready to pay you can waive down the host by holding up the check that is left on your table.
