Great Seafood in the Tampa Bay Area?

My daughter and I had lunch today at the Star Fish Company in Cortez. Oh My!!! I have lived here nearly all my life. How I have missed this place? I had the stone crab since today was the last day of the season and it just seemed the right thing do. My daughter had scallops and clams. They called the clams "strips" but really they were more whole bellies cut in half. Everything was so so good. We sat at the bar because all the picnic tables were full. We talked about how it felt like were on vacation, sitting there watching the boats coming in and out. Yep, sitting there in our shorts and flip flops eating perfectly cooked seafood with a perfect view of the water. This is why people pay a lot of money to come here. And we live here!!!

The scoop on Cuban food in Tampa/Sarasota- La Terasita

I ate at Jose's tonight and had a half cuban sandwich and black bean soup. Jose gave it to me for the lunch special price which I thought was very nice of him ($6.50) Best Cuban sandwich I've ever eaten. The roast pork is to die for. He brought over a sample to the table before we ordered. It is shredded instead of sliced and that's what's on the sandwiches. The 3 of us were fighting over every morsel in the cup. He also brought 2 homemade salsas. One semi-hot and one more-hot. We liked both. I put a little of the hotter one in my black bean soup.

Of the 3 of us, 2 got Cuban sandwiches and the other got a mojo chicken sandwich. The sandwiches are huge and we all took home leftovers. While we were there, we got a phone call from a friend asking us to bring him some roast pork sandwiches and bread pudding.

Everything on the menu looks good and I want to try everything on it and can't wait to go back. If I had been hungrier I would have gotten the blackened wahoo $14.95, tonight's special, which sounded delicious. All entrees come with black beans and rice, fried plantains or yucca. Prices range from $4.75 for a half sandwich to $17.95 for paella which must be ordered in advance.

Jose was very attentive and it's obvious he is very proud of his restaurant and his food. I told him I had heard about the restaurant on Chowhound and would be sure and write about it tonight and let everyone know how good the food is. He was so happy to know that!

It's located at 8799 Cortez Rd. in Bradenton.

Best Chicken Wings in Tampa Bay

Gotta do a shout-out for Wings-n-Things in Bradenton. But only the one on Cortez. The one on Lockwood Ridge is owned by different owners. It's a little hole-in-the-wall place in a strip mall. A locals only place. I'm addicted to their garlic wings. My partner gets the hot ones. You can order them crispy or swimming in sauce. You can order just drummies or just flats. We usually order 20 and get half hot and half garlic. I know most people go for blue cheese but we love the ranch dressing there. If you're ever in Bradenton, or on the way to the beach (Anna Maria Island), stop on the way and give 'em a try!

Cheese in Tampa

There is a new place on Anna Maria Island near Bradenton. I haven't tried it but have friends who have. They don't have a website that I can find, but they do have a Facebook Page. Here is a post from March 12:

Anna Maria Olive Oil Outpost Canary Island Splash arrived, as well as the Spicy Splash, also for my cheesey customers, we just received, Pointe Reyes Blue, Humbolt Fog, Buffalo Mozzerella, Fol Epi, Brie, Manchego, Goat Cheese (in a log) and Drunken Goat.

Wood Fired Pizza Tampa

After reading about this place here on Chowhound we decided to check it out. We live in Bradenton and there's not much to choose from here with pizza. We had to be in Tampa for the day and it was close by. We were the only customers in the restaurant which was kind of scary. The owner was very friendly. The waitress was very helpful. We ordered the "Michelangelo" which was pizza with pepperoni, carmelized onions and mushrooms and a couple of different cheeses. It was delicious! The crust was the right combination of crispy and chewy. It is a VERY thin crust, which I love. There was enough topping without it being weighed down with topping if you know what I mean and the toppings were very flavorful. We ordered a medium and had 2 slices left to bring home. We also ordered a Caesar salad to split. The cost of our meal including tip was $41. Pretty expensive lunch for 2 in my book, but it was good. I would definitely go back but would leave off the salad and order water, lol.
Pizza - $18
Salad - $8
Creme soda - $4
Coke - $2.50

White Horse - Charlotte

When I was in college ( a long time ago, lol), we used to eat at the White Horse regularly. I know the restaurant is gone, but I still crave their Charlie O'Chicken salad platter and sandwich. Does anybody know anything about what happened to the restaurant and where I could possibly get the recipe?

Soul food/country cookin' in Orlando

We will be in Orlando this weekend for a concert. We love Southern style food. We need a very casual place, not fancy as we will be dressed for a rock concert - jeans and t-shirts. I've read a couple posts on Mamma Nem's but it looks kind of fancy from the pictures. Not sure if we would be properly attired.

Recommendations for a dinner spot near Van Wezel Performing Arts Center

North of Van Wezel, just past the airport is a little seafood restaurant called Capt. Brian's. They serve fresh seafood every day, either locally caught or flown in daily. It is relatively inexpensive compared to many seafood restaurants in the area. About $15-22 per person. Includes a small, fresh salad bar, starch choice, steamed veggies and bread. They have a full bar as well. It is where the locals eat fresh seafood. The grilled sea bass is to die for ~ like butter! I've had many items on their menu, grilled and fried. There are also choices for non-fish eaters such as steaks, chicken, burgers, salads. I've never had a bad meal there.
