Visiting San Diego from Phoenix 9/6-9/9 - Need Help!

Seafood/Steak: Georges Ocean Terrace - destination spot for a reason. Amazing food and view.

Sushi - depends on what you're looking for. Akinori is fairly priced, fresh and near by, it's a bit busier/louder of an atmosphere.

Oscars Mex for fish tacos.

Urban Solace for contemporary comfort and reasonable prices. Check out the brunch if you can.

What will it take for Pittsburgh to get some respect in the food world?

You've taken what I said out of context, and quoted me incorrectly.

What will it take for Pittsburgh to get some respect in the food world?

Local support is a separate issue. I want nothing more than for these establishments to be able to thrive - and I hope we can agree on that.

So if you're saying local support is an issue - I may be inclined to agree, but that's just a separate issue than what we were discussing.

If you're saying the lack of support is do to a lack of quality - I disagree, and I don't care to debate differences in subjective opinion.

What will it take for Pittsburgh to get some respect in the food world?

like MagicMark said, I don't see it as a problem.

What's wrong with this inner-ever-evolving scene. Too much focus on extrinsic rewards and national acclaim takes the focus away from what's already happening that is so special. This isn't to say anyone should just stop, or not set goals, but appreciate it for what it is. The artistry is lost when it stops being done from a place of passion.

This hidden gem might be discovered, it might not, it's special regardless.

Birthday dinner in north county- expensive but not stuffy

Georges for sure, and I've heard good things about Bellamy's.

What will it take for Pittsburgh to get some respect in the food world?

Pittsburgh is passed arrived, and I'm sure it could be the next trending food city at any moment.

However, I get this feeling that Pittbsurgh's talent network isn't actually looking for national acclaim. That and the camaradarie among the chefs and establishments is what make the scene even more unique and easy to fall in love with.

Guys like Fuller, Severino, Sousa, Pekarcik, Racicot don't seem to care so much about national acclaim - no matter how deserving they are. They're content with doing what they do to support the Pittsburgh scene..it just that what they are doing is pretty incredible..and the fact that they're so humble about it makes it even more refreshing.

Looking for a great rotisserie chicken to go ...

I'll opt for less fillers and artificial ingredients in any type of food.

Pacific Beach with kids

Pizza - Hoboken or I've seen a decent amount of younger kids at Woodstock.

Sushi - Ota is prime..but very expensive and would probably be wasted on the kids. Mister Sushi is still good enough, the rice for the nigiri is larger than I would prefer but the fish is..or if you're just looking for a place with rolls try PB sushi..it's loud, crowded, and there's drinking...but it's PB..you could be okay in a booth upfront.

Fish Tacos - Oscars Mexican Seafood - best in SD. It's northern PB on Turquoise street right where mission turns into la jolla blvd

Fish - FIshery..bit expensive, could also do the PB Fish shop

Asian Markets - on Convoy Street not too far off..nothing right in PB.

Pittsburgh - Help First Time Visiting Chows from Boston & Chicago!

You could do drinks at Tamari and dinner at Cure..they're walking distance.

Definitely stop by Notion for your fine dining - inventive, intimate

Salt - casual contemporary..more unique with the ingredients and combinations.

Spoon is upper casual, consistently good food, intimate

Root 174 is great and you can stop by Ds 6pack and Dogs beforehand for a huge craft beer selection.

If you love Mexican Seafood check this out

I won't deny being a huge Oscar's fanboy, but I would encourage you to give them another shot. Plain shrimp likely resulted in a lot less seasoning.

What type of fish? smoked, battered, special of the day?

where do you prefer to go for fish tacos in SD?

Delicias - 9-Course Tasting Menu or Keeping up with Chef McCabe

"yet we as a city shit all over these talented chefs and when they leave wonder what happened."

Even more truth - it's not just lack of support by those not "yet" interested in more progressive cuisine, but for those who are - support it. Talk about it in a positive light - encourage more of it. Don't just bitch about the things you don't like.

Pennsylvania products you can't get on the west coast

I moved from Pittsburgh to San Diego I realize SoCal is different than North, but I haven't missed many products.

There seem to be a lot more offerings out this way. I do miss Sheetz at times though.

Pretty sure I've seen tastykakes, but I'm guessing you'll find some asian bakery/import store with stuff you'll like even better.

Beer might be something, but you'll find a bunch of new ones.

I guess my point is..I really don't miss much, I think there's a lot more selection out this way.

would really appreciate some restaurant suggestions

Given the size of SD, I'm trying to make recs closer to where you're staying.

Fish Tacos are a must when visiting SD. The best are at Oscars Mexican Seafood just a few miles up from where you're staying. That's probably the least expensive and best seafood experience you can get. The also have steak for the picky kid.

The best pizza isn't aroud the mission area, but I'm sure they're good enough. Ciro and Woodstock (both have multiple locations) are nearby in Pacific Beach

Mission Cafe for brunch - often recommended
or Rubicon Deli for really great Sandwiches.

If you're going to the Zoo you could make a reservation at Urban Solace after.

Dinner at Georges on The Cove would be a nice birthday/tourist/seafood dinner. It's a destination spot in San Diego, and the La Jolla cove is definitely worth visiting while you're here.

Sugar and Scribe Bakery in PB might be able to do something for a birthday..but they don't do Birthday cakes. I know it's a chain, but if all else fails there is a Coldstone on Mission Blvd..not a bad back-up.

Spending too much on groceries? ..and how to embrace the frugal lifestyle

I think you're missing Thursday's point - putting such restrictions on food can cause very disordered relationships down the line. You can teach them the value of money through other means,

It's one thing to teach them to only take as much as they plan to eat/drink or educate them about healthy food choices (avoiding hydrogenated oils, or too many highly processed snack foods) but growing children need a lot of energy, and I hate to think of a kid not being allowed a second glass of milk.

Further, since when is the RDA for calcium contained in one glass of milk, how does this change as they age? Do you have their meal plans so regimented as to have each macronutrient sufficiently met in the most cost effective way? The exact optimal caloric surplus to support healthy growth and functioning?

If you're worried about them becoming obese..well I think you'd see it coming. They don't balloon up over night. Put limits on TV and video games - not food.

Notion is coming back!

thanks for the report! Glad to see Korean Flavors is still on the menu..the Ribeye and Milk Chocolate seem familiar as well - not a bad thing, as many Chef's continually refine dishes, and the versions I had were great to begin with.

I've had sous vide chicken cylinders elsewhere, and I'm with you - just not my preference. It always seems like luncheon meat to me.

do you happen to know if the breads were made in house?

I'm visiting the area in late May and this on the tops of the list.

NYC coming to SD

Keep the In N Out,

if you're a sushi fan make a reservation to sit at the bar at Kaito or Ota, but I would opt for the former (you'll save a lot of money, and can take a beautiful drive up the 101) there's also Hane if you're staying downtown.

Craft & Commerce and Noble Experiment are from the same group, so don't fret if you only make one.

Weekend Brunch at Urban Solace is worth checking out, make absolutely sure to get cheddar biscuits.

Carnitas Snack Shack

Eclipse Chocolate rather than Extraordinary Desserts

Oscars Mexican Seafood if you don;t feel like traveling to find Mariscos

check out one of the farmers markets

"It's The Sugar, Folks"

Agreed, it's not just sugar. In fact, there are some camps that believe sugar is incredibly metabolically efficient and can promote good health when consumed in adequate (not excessive) amounts. Search Ray Peat for more on this.

I'm not a scientist, but many of these diseases and ailments traced back to sugar seem to be rooted and exacerbated by stress and inflammation - can EXCESS sugar cause such a state? Sure! But I don't think cutting it out entirely would be helpful either.

Vent- medications and appetite

In that case this does seem very odd. We're you losing weight prior to starting the medication, or not trying to at that point?

I'm with everyone else, the most important thing is a balance of health and happiness, but it's sometimes worth looking into.

That said, careful if you're the type to search every possible catastrophic outcome from taking a medication, or condition (I'm guilty of this) I would be interested to hear how things develop.
