Looking for a great rotisserie chicken to go ... I'll opt for less fillers and artificial ingredients in any type of food. |

Pizza - Hoboken or I've seen a decent amount of younger kids at Woodstock. Sushi - Ota is prime..but very expensive and would probably be wasted on the kids. Mister Sushi is still good enough, the rice for the nigiri is larger than I would prefer but the fish is..or if you're just looking for a place with rolls try PB sushi..it's loud, crowded, and there's drinking...but it's PB..you could be okay in a booth upfront. Fish Tacos - Oscars Mexican Seafood - best in SD. It's northern PB on Turquoise street right where mission turns into la jolla blvd Fish - FIshery..bit expensive, could also do the PB Fish shop Asian Markets - on Convoy Street not too far off..nothing right in PB. |

Pittsburgh - Help First Time Visiting Chows from Boston & Chicago! You could do drinks at Tamari and dinner at Cure..they're walking distance. Definitely stop by Notion for your fine dining - inventive, intimate Salt - casual contemporary..more unique with the ingredients and combinations. Spoon is upper casual, consistently good food, intimate Root 174 is great and you can stop by Ds 6pack and Dogs beforehand for a huge craft beer selection. |

If you love Mexican Seafood check this out I won't deny being a huge Oscar's fanboy, but I would encourage you to give them another shot. Plain shrimp likely resulted in a lot less seasoning. What type of fish? smoked, battered, special of the day? where do you prefer to go for fish tacos in SD? |

truffles, I enjoy them, but honestly even if they were only moderately priced I wouldn't go out of my way for them. |

Pennsylvania products you can't get on the west coast maybe pierogies..not sure - haven't been looking |
|

Delicias - 9-Course Tasting Menu or Keeping up with Chef McCabe "yet we as a city shit all over these talented chefs and when they leave wonder what happened." Even more truth - it's not just lack of support by those not "yet" interested in more progressive cuisine, but for those who are - support it. Talk about it in a positive light - encourage more of it. Don't just bitch about the things you don't like. |

Pennsylvania products you can't get on the west coast I moved from Pittsburgh to San Diego I realize SoCal is different than North, but I haven't missed many products. There seem to be a lot more offerings out this way. I do miss Sheetz at times though. Pretty sure I've seen tastykakes, but I'm guessing you'll find some asian bakery/import store with stuff you'll like even better. Beer might be something, but you'll find a bunch of new ones. I guess my point is..I really don't miss much, I think there's a lot more selection out this way. |

would really appreciate some restaurant suggestions Given the size of SD, I'm trying to make recs closer to where you're staying. Fish Tacos are a must when visiting SD. The best are at Oscars Mexican Seafood just a few miles up from where you're staying. That's probably the least expensive and best seafood experience you can get. The also have steak for the picky kid. The best pizza isn't aroud the mission area, but I'm sure they're good enough. Ciro and Woodstock (both have multiple locations) are nearby in Pacific Beach Mission Cafe for brunch - often recommended If you're going to the Zoo you could make a reservation at Urban Solace after. Dinner at Georges on The Cove would be a nice birthday/tourist/seafood dinner. It's a destination spot in San Diego, and the La Jolla cove is definitely worth visiting while you're here. Sugar and Scribe Bakery in PB might be able to do something for a birthday..but they don't do Birthday cakes. I know it's a chain, but if all else fails there is a Coldstone on Mission Blvd..not a bad back-up. |

Help need a unique anniversary dinner Wa Dining Okan - classy enough and I'm sure you could find a bunch of new offerings to try. |

Best fish tacos and cheap oysters? Oscars for fish Taco's, I always say it - they don't have oysters though. |

Spending too much on groceries? ..and how to embrace the frugal lifestyle I think you're missing Thursday's point - putting such restrictions on food can cause very disordered relationships down the line. You can teach them the value of money through other means, It's one thing to teach them to only take as much as they plan to eat/drink or educate them about healthy food choices (avoiding hydrogenated oils, or too many highly processed snack foods) but growing children need a lot of energy, and I hate to think of a kid not being allowed a second glass of milk. Further, since when is the RDA for calcium contained in one glass of milk, how does this change as they age? Do you have their meal plans so regimented as to have each macronutrient sufficiently met in the most cost effective way? The exact optimal caloric surplus to support healthy growth and functioning? If you're worried about them becoming obese..well I think you'd see it coming. They don't balloon up over night. Put limits on TV and video games - not food. |

thanks for the report! Glad to see Korean Flavors is still on the menu..the Ribeye and Milk Chocolate seem familiar as well - not a bad thing, as many Chef's continually refine dishes, and the versions I had were great to begin with. I've had sous vide chicken cylinders elsewhere, and I'm with you - just not my preference. It always seems like luncheon meat to me. do you happen to know if the breads were made in house? I'm visiting the area in late May and this on the tops of the list. |

Keep the In N Out, if you're a sushi fan make a reservation to sit at the bar at Kaito or Ota, but I would opt for the former (you'll save a lot of money, and can take a beautiful drive up the 101) there's also Hane if you're staying downtown. Craft & Commerce and Noble Experiment are from the same group, so don't fret if you only make one. Weekend Brunch at Urban Solace is worth checking out, make absolutely sure to get cheddar biscuits. Carnitas Snack Shack Eclipse Chocolate rather than Extraordinary Desserts Oscars Mexican Seafood if you don;t feel like traveling to find Mariscos check out one of the farmers markets |

Definitely on our to-eat list: |

Sad Winter Food Scene in La Jolla lol, great points |

Agreed, it's not just sugar. In fact, there are some camps that believe sugar is incredibly metabolically efficient and can promote good health when consumed in adequate (not excessive) amounts. Search Ray Peat for more on this. I'm not a scientist, but many of these diseases and ailments traced back to sugar seem to be rooted and exacerbated by stress and inflammation - can EXCESS sugar cause such a state? Sure! But I don't think cutting it out entirely would be helpful either. |

It was discontinued in the US but they still have it in Canada. |

Vent- medications and appetite In that case this does seem very odd. We're you losing weight prior to starting the medication, or not trying to at that point? I'm with everyone else, the most important thing is a balance of health and happiness, but it's sometimes worth looking into. That said, careful if you're the type to search every possible catastrophic outcome from taking a medication, or condition (I'm guilty of this) I would be interested to hear how things develop. |
|
|
Vent- medications and appetite Certainly not eating a lot, but the potential for underestimating is there. 160 2 eggs 360 2oz almonds 400 a heavier beef stew 150 yogurt + berries 160 2 eggs 300 chicken (could be more) 2030 Total so that might be a higher estimation, but even when you cut from that you can see that it may be quite a bit higher than what you thought. I would measure closely for a week or two (just on account of normal fluctuations, especially with women) - don't do any crazy restriction, but enough that you would definitely expect weight loss 1400-1600 cals maybe? Then you can get back to eyeballing things with a little more accuracy, if that turns out to be the case. |
|
|
Vent- medications and appetite It's hard to say without knowing the medication - if it's a corticosteroid or other hormone I would expect fluctuations. Unless you're actually measuring out your foods, you may be underestimating portion sizes ..but the examples you gave don't sound too calorically dense (unless you're forgetting to mention butter or something). I know you aren't looking for medical advice, but if you're interested you might have your doc do a thyroid panel. The body does fight pretty hard at times to maintain homeostasis, including size - if you're drastically reducing calories it may be trying to hold on a bit. That said, I would expect at least an initial drop from someone with your build/activity with a diet a few hundred calories over what you're mentioning. Might be worth looking into. or you're sleep-eating...ambien? |
|
|
How do you "dress" your fried eggs? Salt/Pepper Maple Syrup butter for frying sure, but as an additional topping...sinister. Now Peanut Butter...yes, try it. |

1. TBL3 at Georges - they do the best job of showcasing what makes the SD food scene special. 2. Stick with the best of - you only have 2 days, Try Nine-Ten for a second dinner - even lunch, check out what McCabe is doing at the Marine Room at La Valencia Hotel. If you want something quick - Oscars for Fish Tacos in Bird Rock/ Pacific Beach 3. Georges has a good bar program, or you could go to Whisknladle for drinks and bar snacks - probably not the best in SD but a good time. 4. SD is huge, trying to make it all over to some of the best spots would be more stress than enjoyment. I would just stick to La Jolla and that vicinity to make sure you meet your #1 priority. Depening on budget - La Valencia, Grande Colonial, or even the Holiday Inn in Bird Rock 5. Check out Seal Beach, Museum of Art in LJ - there are also a ton of shops and galleries, or rent bikes at Mission Beach and take in the scenery. |

so as much as I wish Mision 19 was in San Diego - it's not. So why don't we show off the best of what we have? |
|

I think you're asking for BBQ pork ribs prime rib is beef. Coops West Texas BBQ in Lemon Grove is a good choice. |

Recommendation needed Pittsburgh area for Cheap Eats but exceptional food. Tons of quality spots around town are very, very, reasonably priced (even generously) but $10 a plate isn't likely, and by most definition that would be a $, or -$ (as in the restaurant is losing money) A lot of people ask for quality, but aren't willing to support it. |
|
|
Philly 'hound in town for two days. You're going to need your car anyway to see some of the best around SD. Sunday lunch - stop at Oscars for fish tacos on the way up through Birdrock to La Jolla Cove - do some touristy things and then finish with dinner at Georges in time to catch the sunset. Monday - Breakfast at Las Quatras Milpas then maybe a Coronado trip? |

SD Chef Family Tree Graphic - UT Kostow runs Meadowood |

Favorite (independent) coffee shop? Coffee + Staff + Setting = Bird Rock Panniken in LJ - gets absolutely packed, but cozy, friendly people, and a good selection Just for the setting, Turquoise Coffee - can't comment on too many experiences, but love the set up. |
