Late night dinner date on Westside?

i was going to suggest la cabana in venice - but it's not really date-worthy.

all the chefs i've known go to chez jay. i don't really like the food - but it's cute.

have you thought about local hotel bars? most hotels have 24-hour room service and would probably serve it in the bar. there are tons of hotels in santa monica. maybe it's worth a drop in to see.

Looking for really spicy foods

try akbar indian. they have a chili meter (1-5) and if you ask them to make it a 5 (and say you know that 5 is really really spicy), you can get some good spicy food. the vindaloo, obviously, is very spicy. but they also have a dish called prawns madras that they make up to a 5 and it is really good. the spice meter can be hit or miss. but i feel like it's that way everywhere (even jitlada where i have never been able to get really spicy food no matter how hard i ask).

btw-this comment is only for santa monica and mdr locations.

the suicide wings at hogies and wings are pretty spicy.

and, there's always the red sauce at king taco! killer. the green is good too - but not quite as hot

German potato salad?

it might seem odd - but chili addiction on la cienega has fantastic german potato salad. one of the owners uses his mom's recipe. they don't always make it - so call ahead.

cole's potato salad is one of my favorites - but it's not quite german potato salad.

Sunday brunch or lunch with ocean view in Malibu or Santa Monica

geoffrey's is good for an appetizer, dessert, and cocktail - but skip main courses. too expensive and not that great.

moonshadows is great!!! i like sitting outside better than inside, but sometimes they are tough about it.

malibu beach inn is really lovely and the food is good.

not mentioned - the sunset at zuma - http://www.thesunsetrestaurant.com/

also - at the end of santa monica pier is an ok mexican place. not great - but not bad and a nice atmosphere.

are there any good restaurants in pacific palisades? if so, what are they?

i will have some family in town over the holiday season staying in the pacific palisades area. i live not too far away - but have NEVER even been to a restaurant in pacific palisades! i feel like that's crazy, but it's true. i did some google searches and chowhound searches and have not come up with much.

are there any good eats to be had? is it a culinary wasteland? if you know of good restaurants, i'd love to pass them along to my family.

Ordering take-out from places that don't usually do take-out

i do this pretty often - but usually at odd times and so the strain on staff isn't an issue. i always start by asking politely: "you may not do take out, but would it be possible. . . . . . please . . . thank you so much!"

i say do it often and all over the place! i mean, restaurants are in the service business. they should help make your life easier/nicer/etc.

i tip between 10-20 percent depending on how easy/nice the whole process is (and how much my order is - b/c with a big order, a lower percentage tip makes sense because no more has been done. but if you had dined in the restaurant - much more would have been done).

trying to decide on a french restaurant

this is for my mom's birthday - and so i'd like it to be a little fancier than (i think) le saint amour is.

trying to decide on a french restaurant

nice wrap up.

i'm in the same boat re la cachette - the restaurant was so good, that i'd like to try the bistro. i'm just hoping for a similar experience. some of the menu items look similar to the restaurant's menu - so that's a plus.

trying to decide on a french restaurant

i've narrowed it down to anisette, la cachette bistro, and comme ca.

i want to try someplace new, but would also like it to be really really good. i have not been to any of these and was wondering if anyone had strong opinions about the level of tastiness?

Overheard at next table...."Sorry, your card has been decined..."

paying for anyone is a nice thing to do.

but foisting a job upon the manager to (1) lie, (2) teach the boy a lesson is not nice. the restaurant deserves to be paid for what these two ordered. they do not need to lie or teach anyone lessons in adding/subtracting at a good samaritan's request.

Chow Wars! Chowhound tries Chow - Philippe Chow L.A. [FIRST REVIEW, long]

thank you so much for this review. without people like you sharing experiences, i would have no idea this type of place even existed. it really is amazing to me and definitely made my day!

I fed a vegetarian lard by mistake. Do I tell her?

don't tell. the only upside . . . it sounds like . . . is upsetting her. this is a bad outcome because you acted with good intentions. life happens. move on and don't risk getting her in a tizzy about nothing. this way - you can make the dip again (w/the veggie beans) and she won't be afraid to eat it.

Staff Meals Today: What Top LA Restaurants Are Serving Their Employees

is this every day? they have to eat the same thing every day?

i think it should be a crime if restaurants didn't feed their staff. totally uncool.

and what's with water grill? salad? no starch/protein?

Michael Mina's XIV Gamut # 2 - Perceptor's Report

i know this is an older post - so you may not see this.

first - great report! i love your photos. thanks for sharing.

second - if you get the gamut, did each of you share one dish - or is it $250/each person? i was just a bit confused by that.

i can't wait to try this place, the food looks yummy.

JOE'S in Venice - very disappointing

sorry about this experience and the waste of money!

i am always a bit perplexed when i see people rave about joe's. i've never had an excellent meal there. i've had fine meals - but for the price, i just don't think it's worth my time. i'd rather eat somewhere new. even so - people seem to still like it. i guess it's just different tastes / different ordering? good luck to your next dining adventure!

Something delicious to bring on the plane with me, but must buy the day before

bay cities godmother. i only like to eat these several hours after they are made because their bread is so hard. since it will be overnight, i might ask for the hot pepper salad on the side and just put it in when you'll eat it. but this should definitely keep overnight and will be amazing! it's kind of like getting a muffaletta when leaving new orleans.

Help! need restaurant for my niece's sweet 16 on Halloween

i agree with this - if it's where she wants to go, that's easier for you. traffic all over the city is an absolute nightmare on halloween and so going somewhere with parking would be good. also, finding capacity for a group of 16-year-olds might be tough in places that serve alcohol b/c halloween is probably a profitable night and i don't think they'd want to give up seats.

Where to eat on a budget near Disney Hall??

the closest place i can think of (other than koo koo roo and cpk) is the redwood bar. it's pretty tasty. i love their clam chowder which is one of the only things i get there. but they have ok burgers and other fare
http://www.theredwoodbar.com/site08/h...

cole's is also not too far and has some great history and phenomenal potato salad.
http://colesfrenchdip.com/

is little tokyo too far for you? there are some inexpensive foodie places around both. i would check out spitz, wurstkuche, or nickel diner.

that's too bad. i assume you've also checked out casablanca - on lincoln right near there. i don't care for the food, but a lot of other people seem to like it.

there's also el cholo. i know it's not really a chowish place - but it has some nice la history associated with it and the food is ok.

Private Dining Room for 60 in Santa Monica/Venice - Rehearsal Dinner

la cachette bistro always seems empty and definitely seems like it could seat this sized party. while it would be getting close to your price range limit - they might be flexible especially depending on the food choices. i've found a lot of places will accommodate a budget if you book on an off night or if they are in need of business. this is especially so if you have a pre-planned menu. just a thought.

there's also la cabana in venice which is a pretty tasty place and definitely within your price range / party size.
