Honestly, I think that the staff are great & really know their stuff, but the place is just insanely expensive. For spices, I'd much rather go to Dual Specialty a few blocks west (http://www.dualspecialty.com). They have every spice under the sun.

Northern Spy vs. Back Forty

I'd have to go with Back Forty. Mainly because I've been there more times, it's much roomier & I can't get enough of the Pork Jowl Nuggets, their fried chicken & the cocktails.

That having been said, I have yet to have a bad meal at Northern Spy.

Foodgasm, @ Acme

I've had the beer porridge both times I've been there, it looks like I need to branch out & try some of the other desserts. Did you try the Farmer's Eggs yet? I particularly enjoyed that dish.

I'll admit that I miss the original ACME, but I'm slowly warming up to this Nordic stunner. A bit pricey, yes, but well worth it!

Meatball Factory - eh at best

They closed for a while & are apparently under new ownership but it seems that nothing has changed... Anyone else think that the tables are way to high (or the chairs too short)? I felt like I needed a booster seat!

Meatball Factory - eh at best

I've been twice. The 1st time was because the manager invited me hoping I would write a favorable review. I ended up getting drunk so I couldn't taste the food. The 2nd time I went was because I had an expiring Groupon (the entire bottle of wine that I drank helped the meat go down). The Turducken meatballs weren't bad, but I doubt I'll be going back EVER. Do yourself a favor & go to the Meatball Shop. Far superior.

Minetta Tavern - Photography Now Banned

I had a similar experience at JoeDoe, a much less upscale restaurant in the East Village. Initially I was peeved as I have a blog & I like to document my dining experiences, but I can respect the decision. They also welcomed me to come back in-between services if I'd like to take pictures.

Excellent new Burger

You been there yet Howdini? It's not like we need more burger spots in the East Village, but I am eager to try it out...

Pig's Head

Personally I'd head to Chinatown, there are a million butchers down there. Kathryn is correct on Dickson's (You might have to special order) or Paisanos by the Bergen F stop.

Peasant or Pylos

I've been to both, twice. Pylos didn't impress that much, the appetizers were much better than the entrees. Peasant, however, I really liked. Wed. night might be ok, but it tends to get busy there though & rightly so.

Recommendations for East Village

That place was awesome!!! Totally miss it too.

@Ricky: I understand about delivery sushi, but sometimes I want some Uni & I just don't want to leave my house!

Not exactly in the EV, but I went to Bond St. last night & had the most amazing meal. Broke the bank, but it was worth it.

Best Burgers in NYC.................

That's not good...
While on the subject of burgers, Korzo Haus in the East Village does a great take on the classic burger. Flame-grilled, wrapped in langos dough, then deep fried. It's not for everyone, but I get the burger once a month.

Where to buy bacalao / baccala in Manhattan?

Essex Market is where I go. Not sure of the exact name of the stall, but it's to the back & on the right. I've never gone wrong there!

Spina

I've been hearing nothing but praise for Spina which is great as I thought that location was cursed (I've seen so many restaurants come & go over the years Uovo, Cafe Margaux, La Scarpetta). I guess I really need to put them on my 'go-to list'. Have you been there on a Fri. or Sat. yet? Does it get busy? Thanks for the review!

In praise of Korzo Haus

Respect! Korzo Haus is really good food. I don't go there as much as I should, but when I do, I always have a great meal. The chef, Steven is so Amped about food & it really shows. My favs are the deep fried Korzo burger (obviously) & the chicken liver mousse. An excellent addition to the East Village.

Need E. Vill ramen suggestion for early dinner tomorrow - one adult, one toddler.

Rai Rai Ken is tiny, so if you go prepare to be a bit cramped (I do love the ramen there). I'd suggest Minca (my favorite), Ippudo (not exactly East Village but close enough, prepare to wait), Robatayaki or Kuboya which has a lighter broth not unlike Rai Rai Ken. Happy Eating!

My favorite bar for great beers and food is Klimat in the EV. Any others I might like?

A nice list there, well done. I wish Kafana got more business, it always seems to empty when I pass by. If you get in good with the owner Vladimir, he'll give you some of his Granddad's brandy. It'll burn your mouth & throat but you'll love it! Good Beer on 9th sells well, Good Damn Beer. The guys that work there are great & really knowledgeable, they can tell you all you need to know about any beer there.

I totally agree with Royale, best burgers in the East Village). Casimir also has a large bar (which I regularly eat at) & a full liquor license, but is really more of a restaurant & doesn't have a massive beer selection. Croxley's on Avenue B has a giant beer list & good wings & bar food, as does East Village Tavern. Enjoy!
