Looking for great bread in Vancouver
Buns at Sciué Italian Bakery Caffé are tasty.
Real Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver?
Haha Yeah big oversight. My paychecks not big enough to add Tojo's to my weekly restaurant list.
Real Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver?
Looks like I'll have some travelling to do when Aki closes.
Real Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver?
Thanks. Lots of great suggestions, It seems like so many places in Vancouver are really just Chinese places making Japanese food.
Not a great vibe in those restaurants.
I'll have to give them all these recommendations a try.
Real Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver?
Aki on Thurlow is closing in the middle of February and who knows when, and if, they'll find a place in the increasing sterile heart of Vancouver.
Any suggestions for other real Japanese restaurants in Vancouver?
For me a Japanese restaurant isn't the same unless it's run and staffed by Japanese people. Somehow there's a different feel. The Japanese seem to be more respectful and caring of the food and customers.
I love the indifferent panic of a busy Chinese restaurant but when it comes to Japanese food it's not the same.
Any suggestions including seemingly obvious places would be appreciated.
Bagels in Vancouver
Tried Benny's Bagels today. Not a fan. Not dense enough for my liking.
My best bagel memory is a place (gone now?) called Village Bagel (I think) in Hamilton Ontario. Chewy dense and delicious.
Bagels in Vancouver
Haven't tried Benny's Bagels. Siegels are as tasty as any bagels I've had in BC.
Are you sick of Granville Island ?
Not really. Granville Island Teas is by far the best tea shop in Vancouver. Siegel Bagels has a location there, Oyama is world class and there's some decent if pricey butcher shops. I seem to be able to find most things I'm looking for in one place, except bread but for my money there isn't really a great bakery anywhere in Vancouver.
One thing I will say is that there aren't many changes over the years so if you're hoping for something new it's not likely to happen.
What are you enjoying at Vancouver street food carts?
Can't believe I sound like a tourist from Port Albern but the price of street food in Vancouver is too high for me. I find I'm always heading for a sit down instead.
Places downtown look packed so it's not likely the prices will drop. On South Granville the carts don't seem that busy but still too pricey and the offerings haven't grabbed me yet.
Bagels in Vancouver
Yeah great bagels. I've only had the Victoria ones. Do you know if the shop in Vancouver is the same?

Seigels over Solly's by a mile.
Solly's has more of a bread consistancy than an authentic Montreal style bagel feel. They both seem to be popular but my son and wife won't even eat Solly's.
Siegels oven is wood fired and they're open 24 hours a day which is kind of nice when you're coming home late.
Mount Royal in Victoria is good as well though I haven't tried the ones from North Vancouver. I think they should be the same.
Looking for great bread in Vancouver
For my money A Bread Affair is okay, nothing more. Nice to see a bakery at Granville Island though.
Looking for great bread in Vancouver
Haha. I hear you, I think you'll be really impressed with their breads. Baking there is fantastic as well.

It was Terra Breads. May have been a particular loaf. Not as bad as La Baguette. :-)
Have you had a chance to try Wild Fire or Fol Epi? They really set the standard for me.
Great Ice Cream on Granville Island
Yeah, I thought it was reasonably priced. $3.50 for a small one scoop cone.
The cheapest, best (and only) Sakekasu ice cream I've ever had. Not sure if there is anything like it in Vancouver, BC or Canada.
Everyone who likes food should give it a try.
Great Ice Cream on Granville Island
My first visit to Artisan Sake Maker was this weekend.
Didn't feel like sake but I tried their ice cream. House made with Sakekasu the remains of the fermented rice mash. Really tasty with a hint of sake.
I'll go back to try the sake next weekend.

I'll give Afra a try. Thanks
Sounds like you had Frys Red Wheat Bread
Looking for great bread in Vancouver
I'll give them a try. I've been using ciabatta buns from Whole Foods as hamburger buns.

This is going to make me seem like a real snob but I find their bread on par with Wonderbread. Buy a baguette from La Baguette and one from Beyond Bread (the best baguette I've found so far?) and try them side by side. Tear, cut, plain, buttered, toasted, not toasted. Let me know what you think.
Looking for great bread in Vancouver
I recently moved from Victoria to Vancouver and I'm looking for a great bakery here. Specifically looking for bread made with natural yeast and cooked in a wood fired oven. Dense, chewy bread that needs nothing on it but maybe a bit of butter.
Victoria has Wild Fire and Fol Epi (two exceptional bakeries) and Comox has Church Street Woodfired Bakery but I can't find anything like these bakeries in Vancouver.
People have suggested Terra Breads but I tried their bread and it's mealy without character.
Any suggestions?
Western Canada's best bakeries lets make a list
In Victoria: Wild Fire and Fol Epi
Great bakeries.
