Union Square Cafe...Is it still worth trying?
Totally past its prime! Used to be my go- to place for a great meal.
Our last visit to USC was really bad. Food was inedible, service was surly .
I wrote to them about all of this. They didn't even bother to reply.
Russ & Daughters - excellent
I highly recommend the Super Heeb Sandwich at Russ @ Daughters.
First got my attention as a Time Out New York critics' pick....
horseradish cream cheese; wasabi flavored flying-fish roe; and whitefish salad, on a bagel.
Nothing like this anywhere else. This is an amazing combo !
Savoy -- don't waste your money there
I agree with you. I remember the unique and quite wonderful experience that dinner at Savoy was, when they first opened.

appreciate the info Lucia. Reading some posts I feel that I should also ask if Apizz is a place a 30 year old young man would want to go to with his parents---or is it more of a romantic couples place? ( it will be his birthday and there will just be the three of us.) Is it possibly hip--not just "romantic ?"

Past its prime. This used to be a special place for me. Now agree with "pretty awful." Our salmon also was "inedible." I'll add that we also found the service ,and especially the attitude, sub par. I wrote a letter to USC to tell them my experience. No reply...
A 'hidden gem' for a birthday dinner...
. Someone here yesterday talked about Apizz. I have never been there. It sounded good ,and I made reservations for a birthday dinner. Since having done so, I have had this nagging doubt that maybe it was cute and cozy--but not really a place wher a 35 year old man should celebrate his birthday. I would appreciate any more info about ambiance and food at Apizz. Thanks!

Chelsea: eye candy + good food, possible?
We thought the food at Vynl was quite bland. The vibe there was not exactly what you are looking for. I think that Elmo is a good place for you and your friend to have dinner with the boys. The food and service have always been quite decent. Just mentioning though, the music tends to be quite loud. This may be a consideration if serious conversation is planned.

Yay to their chipotle hummus.
I spread it on lavash or pita- and then drizzle on honey.
It becomes yummy sweet -spicy .

This summer, the Super Heeb received a Sandwich of the Week award, from Time Out. I first learned of this amazing yet cheap food, in Heeb magazine and on heebmagazine.com.
Restaurants everyone loves--except you
Recently , Union Square Cafe. The food and the service -really not good. And -
I cannot understand why everyone seems to love Red Cat, in Chelsea. I find the food just average, and the service really bad. ... like saying they do not have my (confirmed) reservation listed- but offering me a table right at the front door.....like taking away my bread plate while I was still eating (this happened more than once.)
Things you like slightly burned or burnt?
Have you ever had eggplant pizza? I am not talking about slabs of eggplant thrown over a pie. I am talking seasoned, breaded thin eggplant cooked into the pizza. The pieces that end up "burnt" ( in a good way ) are best.
overrated restaurants
Went to USC this weekend . They led us to the balcony- even though there were many tables available on the first floor. The food was not the way it used to be---back in the days when it was so difficult to reserve a table. Some of the dishes were overly salted. The rest I also felt were so-so. I do relate to, and agree with what you say.
