Donuts in North Jersey

Natale's Bakery in Summit, NJ has homemade donuts as well as many other quality baked goods. They don't have exotic flavors like Donut Plant.

I once had an excellent raspberry jelly donut from the Chatham Bakery on Main St. but I can't speak to the quality of other items.

Do post back if you find something good.

Why are there so many terrible restaurants in Jersey?

I would say amen to the OP. I was just looking for somewhere to go out in our bland, bland, blah corner of Union County tonight and gave up. I'd rather eat leftovers at home than shell out money for indifferent service and boring food.

Yes, you can find gems in NJ but you have travel far and wide.

I blame the crappy food choices in our area on the restrictive liquor laws. It must be tough to be a restaurant owner and not be able to capture the markup on booze. I'd happily give up BYOB if it could mean better food.

Cathay 22 - does it have dim sum with the carts and all that jazz?

Does Cathay 22 have decent food? We recently relocated to Union County from Brooklyn (partner grew up around here) and we are struggling to find decent non-Italian food that doesn't involve a lot of driving (we have a kid who loves to eat but can get car sick). We've driven by Cathay 22 for years but never had the need to try it until now!

We will definitely check out Jade Isle and the recommendations in Parsippany. Now, if we could only find xiaolongbao, bahn mi and pho in Union County we'd be all set.

Help Me! Ostrovitsky Bakery Question

YES! Kukucs! No idea how to spell it either but that is it. And I meant Ostrovitsky's Bakery. I will call them. Thank you, thank you!

Help Me! Ostrovitsky Bakery Question

It has been a few years since I was at Ostrovinksy's. We got an amazing chocolate pastry there. Kind of like chocolate babka but more dense and rich. I think it was called something like kapushke but I could be way off on that. Does anyone know what it was and if they have it every day or only certain days (again, hazy memory says they only had it on Thursdays and Fridays? The other thing I remember is they have it in a large pan and they cut if off and sell it by the pound. And it is amazingly delicious.

Streit's Moonstrips Matzos in Brownstone Brooklyn?

Anyone seen Streit's Moonstrips Matzos anywhere in Brownstone Brooklyn? This is the most flavorful and addictive matzo I have ever had. I was introduced to it by a friend in New Jersey. I need a local source this year!

Looking for Apple Cider Donuts

I don't know what you mean by "They aren't fresh". Maybe that they don't fry them up at the Greenmarket? Anyway, Wilklow Orchards always has them at the Borough Hall Greenmarket on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Just bought some on Tuesday. I think they are delicious!

looking for sherbet in brooklyn and beyond!

I haven't looked for it in a while, but the Key Food on Atlantic Ave. and Clinton St. has always stocked their own store brand of sherbet. I would assume that other Keys stock it as well.

Enoteca on Court St

Were they playing the same awful music at ear-splitting volume as temasek mentioned in the June 17 post? We were there in October and it was a real problem. Our waiter said there was no way to turn it down. How could they not have volume control? Food and wine were great (we each had wine flights, which were very interesting). Pizza was great too but we haven't really been interested in going back because the loud, bad music was just too much.

Tip Advice for Thanksgiving Buffet

On the entire bill? At a buffett? In a ballroom?

Tip Advice for Thanksgiving Buffet

Our family (infant, five year old, two adults) is eating the Bernards Inn's Thanksgiving buffet tomorrow afternoon. It's $133 before tax and drinks, and it's served in its ballroom, not the dining room.

Assuming we will have our plates cleared and our drinks order taken and delivered by staff, what do you think an appropriate tip percentage might be, of which amount?

Quercy?

What about Cafe Luluc on Smith St.? We've only been for brunch which was fine but not substantially different in quality from Tabac. Can anyone comment on Luluc's food at lunch/dinner?

NJ Thanksgiving Lunch in the country

I am looking for somewhere to go with my husband and two small children for a quiet Thanksgiving meal. Ideally somewhere we could combine with a walk in the woods. We will be driving from NYC. Thanks.

Queen on Court in Brooklyn - semi-Dine-In Brooklyn experience

I have to disagree. Queen's cheese ravioli delivered is some of the best comfort food I can think of in all of Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill.

Help. Mezcal's on Fifth.

I can't get out of this. Friends are dragging me to Mezcal's on Fifth Avenue.

I've only ever been to the one on Atlantic and it was awful.

So, if you had to go and had to order one thing, what would you suffer through?

Just moved to Cobble Hill

Nicky's does deliver and their sandwiches and pho are a great addition to the neighborhood. We like the roast chicken (not especially Middle Eastern, but very tasty), babaganoush (my favorite in the 'hood) and falafel from Waterfalls. The spinach pies are better and cheaper at Damascus Bakery.

OK for kids in Brooklyn Hights, Lunch

Heights Cafe on Montague Street between Montague Terrace and Hicks St. has good food and a children's menu. I recommend the hamburger and very good french fries. If it is nice weather you can sit outside. Heads up, they only take Amex.

Louis's at Pawley's is Closing

This is sad. I go to Litchfield once a year and my first stop is Louis's. Las Vegas will not understand or appreciate the food. People will go once for the experience and not be repeat customers.

Rice & Beans Near Bloomingdales?

Ok here goes. My favorite little Spanish-Chinese place on the north side of 60th between Lexington and Park just closed. I'm guessing I'll have to head east over to Third or Second or perhaps even First to satisfy the sometime lunchtime craving for rice and beans and plantains, etc., but I don't really have a Plan B in mind.

Can any Chowhounders help? Muchos gracias.

Patty Melt - Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill

I have ordered a patty melt many times at Clark's Restaurant on the corner of Henry and Clark streets. I'm pretty sure it's on the menu. Anyway, they make 'em and they are tasty!

Butchers in Brooklyn Hts/Cobble Hill

I like Heights Prime Meats on Clark Street between Henry and Hicks in the Heights. They carry organic meats and have what seem to me to be reasonable prices and fresh products. The guys that work there are quiet but nice and happy to answer questions.

I tried Staubitz a couple of times but found them to be expensive and somewhat put off by my basic questions. A lot of people like Los Paisaons, but whenever I've gone in there I've had a hard time understanding the guys behind the counter. Like jdf said, I'm not sure about how much organic they carry.

If you are really looking for good quality meats, nothing beats Dines Farms who used to be at the Ft. Greene Farmers Market. They have been hard to find this winter.

Waterfront Ale House

That's we only go for a bottle of the annual, homemade Egg Nog (which I believe is now up to $23). It's a generally poor value for mediocrity at best -- and accompanied by similar service. Egg Nog rocks though.

Where are Our "Eastern Potatoes" From? [Moved from Home Cooking board]

Our favorite, flavorful potato is a five-pound bag of what appear to be generic Eastern Potatoes from a local chain grocer. We find they carry so much more nuance and, well, flavor than starchy, flavorless Idaho's. The only identifier on the five-pound bag is Mabijo Packing Corp, NYC Terminal Market, Bronx, NY 17474.

So, we wondered, from where do these taters hail? We couldn't figure why they'd have been Maine 'taters, since we assumed the Maine Marketing was only slightly less enthusiastic -- or had only slightly less money -- to market their Aroostook County potatoes than the Idaho farmers.

But we wondered: Could these Eastern Potatoes have come from, say, Ohio or Pennsylvania or New Jersey or Upstate New York? Indiana? West Virginia? Tennessee? Delaware or Virginia or Maryland? What IS an Eastern Potato anyway?

Is there a Department of Agriculture "Eastern Potato" designation?

The only thing we found using Google was that the Mabijo Packing Corp. is apparently upstate, on Rr 2 Box 71, Goshen, NY 10924, (845) 651-7266.

Saul -- What to Order?

My husband and I were there for the first time last Friday. The roasted fois gras appetizer is AMAZING. It had a wonderful, hearty caramelized flavor that was just right on a cold night, and a very creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I had the roasted duck app., which was also very tasty and hearty. We were less wowed by the entrees. I had the diver scallops and my husband had the rabbit. They were good, but not as amazing as the apps. The specials, which I can't remember the details of, were all very meaty. One was free range venison from somewhere in Texas. Kinda wish we gone for one of the specials.

The Baked Alaska dessert is also a standout.

Enjoy and report back on what you eat!

Joya-Off Night or Gone Downhill?

I'm sure some of you will say Joya was never up a hill to go down; nonetheless, we've used Joya as a takeout standby since they opened in the neighborhood. Sunday night we got takeout after a couple of weeks without ordering. Everything seemed off somehow. The Massaman Curry, which always had what I thought was a nice sweet but spicy and strong cardamom flavor, tasted more like what you get straight from a can from an Asian grocery store. The old Massaman was just curry, meat, potatoes and peanuts. On Sunday, there were NO peanuts, less meat and lots of veggies like peppers, eggplant and carrots. The spicy noodles with beef used to have a variety of veggies but on Sunday was just what seemed to be broccoli stems and leaves, and it wasn't spicy at all. Even the vegetable spring rolls didn't seem the same. Anyone know what's up?

More T-Day Planning-BKLYN Gravy Sources?

While I am hitting up fellow hounds for my Thanksgiving dinner planning, can anyone recommend a good source for gravy, preferably in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens? In years past I got wonderful sage giblet gravy from Christophe at the red deli on Clinton and Verandah Place in Cobble Hill. Now that he's gone, I am at a loss. I just don't do homemade gravy because I'm not that crazy about it to begin with. I did like Christophes, though. It was wonderfully sagey and meaty. So, any backups? Lassen and Hennings? Cobblestone Foods? Fairway? I want something better than salty brown goo.

DiPaolo Turkey Still at Boro Hall Greenmarket?

I'm starrting to plan my Thanksgiving dinner, and I remember getting a turkey breast from DiPaolo at the Borough Hall Greenmarket a couple of years ago. Does anyone know if they still come on Saturdays? If they don't, any suggestions on where to get a good turkey breast? I'd prefer not to cook a whole turkey for just four people. Dines Farmes told me they are doing only whole birds this year.
