Pork Chop BBQ in Flemington
Ive taken out food here a few times with pretty mixed results. The pulled pork, cole slaw and black beans have all been great. The babyback ribs were frankly inedible - salty beyond belief and threw out an entire rack. They also seemed to be dry rub, which admittedly isnt my favorite, but that notwithstanding they were truly terrible. Also forgot to pack the cornbread I had paid for, which is something Id expect at Burger King, but not for a small, new business that is trying to make a good impression.
Aikou, Flemington
Like Ambrose I posted last year about Aikou and have continued to eat there. Ive really only enjoyed the sushi though and have found the other items a bit lacking. Recently though I see two things that bother me and have me thinking about trying some of the other local sushi places (is Shiki any good)?
Firstly theyve started giving 5 pieces rather than 6 in some of the standard rolls - this has only just recently started happening so maybe that was just an oversight?
Secondly, we always do take out and without fail, regardless of how much we order, they give us ONE soy sauce and ONE pair of chopsticks. I need to remember every time to ask for more and then wait around while they dig it up. I can appreciate not dumping handfuls of these items in the bag, but one of each is extremely cheesy. They also forgot to put part of my order in the bag before and I had to drive all the way back to get it. I called them to tell them I was coming and they had it ready - but would have been nice given the inconvenience if theyd thrown in a little something extra (not a requirement but certainly wouldve done something to allay my frustration of having the evening disrupted)
Cutting corners so visibly makes me a little concerned about where else theyre cutting corners (and is kind of just a general turn off).
Anyway, if I a knew a comparable place IN FLEMINGTON, Id give them a shot....
Flemington - Bok Bok Fresh
Was underwhelmed, especially for the cost. Lunch for two somehow crept up near 20 bucks. Not worth it
shumi sushi
I posted a negative review of Shumi several months back and the consensus was that Im nuts. But Im with you - my experience was the food was actually terrible. Theyve opened AIkou sushi in Flemington, and while it will not (or shouldnt anyway) win any prizes for best in state, it has proven vastly superior to Shumi - my advise is to go there. Im open to any other places is the Hunterdon are for sushi if you have any advice!
Aikou in Flemington
So I tried Aikou. Seems promising. Got the singles sushi platter which was quite good - very fresh. Also got the chicken pad thai and miso soup. Would describe both as innocuous. Could use more flavor in the pad thai, wasnt something Id get again, but was perfectly edible, just nothing special. Really most excited about the sushi - I know of no other place in the area to get reasonable sushi (dont get me started on my shumi experience) so Im hoping they only get better!
Aikou in Flemington
New Japanese place in Flemington - looks to be informal / take out type place. Any idea what they have there / if its any good?
Amusing menu gaffes - what's yours? [moved from Boston board]
Tigers Deli take out menu in NJ menu used to offer Corned "Beak" sandwiches - think they mustve gotten spell checked into that. Id peruse the menu trying to decide what to order and somehow that always put me off ever ordering the corned beef....
Authentic Japanese Restaurants in Central NJ?
ordinary by definition alone = not good. How does it fly in the face of hundreds of afficonadoes. you clearly fancy yourself quite an afficionado and said the first time you went there you had a very "ordinary" time. doesnt sound like the best sushi on the planet to me! as far as benihana goes, what they have cannot be any worse than what shumi serves off its regular menu!!

mmgpsych responding to your 'disappeared' post, check shumirestaurant.com - as you can see there IS a website
to your point, yes that is as you say a "beginners" platter. as this is the first time Ive eaten at this place, this is a good way to get a sense for what they can do. certainly if a place doesnt have good, say, yellowtail Im not going to spend $150 to be poisened by the blowfish for petes sake. additionally simple sushi does not mean it isnt good or that the person is not "sophisticated".
agreed a 20 minute ride home does not enhance the flavors of sushi, however it does not it turn it into garbage (which mine was). I can assure you the temparture of the sushi was just fine - it didnt ride home uncovered resting on the engine block. Ive driven sushi home from Oishi in Yardley many times (where Id continue to go if it wasnt 40 minutes) and its been delicious.
Look the point is this, depsite what you may regard as a lack of sophistication or understanding of sushi, I can tell you this was bad sushi. I know. I can sit and regale you with tales of all the places Ive been and how I know, but instead we only need look back at your prior posts. You said yourself the items offered off the menu are not good. That is really my point. To me a good restaurant serves good food - down to the most pedestrian items. The fact this place serves remarkably bad items off its posted menu and then makes you pay triple to get good stuff turns me off. End of story - wont be back (and as Ive said Im sure I wont be missed). Now onto the real question - where else in the are can you get good sushi???

I kept hearing this about shumi and fianlly tried it - ened up throwing out the $40 couples platter because it was terrible and not at all fresh. I wont be going back - and Im desperate for a good place in the Hunterdon area. Would love to find a yakiniku place around somehwehre too - but Im not going to hold my breath!
Need recommendations in/near Rocky Hill/Montgomery for casual business lunch
id give tigers tail another shot (if not for this lunch, then another time). the reuben there is open face - which to me is the downfall of any reuben. but actually the food there is pretty good - chicken sandwiches, grouper rueben, wings etc all good & suprisingly they have good shellfish, lamb etc. wish it was closer to my work! brothers moon is a tasty place, but usually pretty quiet - not sure what youre looking for in this lunch but frankly tigers tale is a more conivivial atmosphere than brothers moon - thats a place for brunch after church with your mother or a date with your wife.....
Hunterdon (Flemington) Catering

Hunterdon (Flemington) Catering
Looking to pick up a couple of trays of food for a Christening - nothing exotic or pricey - just good food for approx 20. Something in the Flemington area. Mangia Bene came to mind but they dont have pick-up on Sundays, and I dont want stash in the fridge overnight.
Princeton, NJ......walking distance from Princeton University
nah, theyre not hoagie nazis. back in the day they were all greek guys and could be a little confusing when getting your food dressed. mostly youd get fries and they'd rapid fire 'salt, pepper, ketchup'?!?!? at you - if you hadnt been there before you didnt know what they were on about. Thats probably the soup-naziesque bit youve heard of. I think the new people do the same - just be ready for it. Actually that phrase seems to have caught on all over NJ now - you get it everytime you get a porkroll etc!
Flemington area eats
Hi all - Just moved to Flemington and am looking for some local recs. Think Flemington north up 202 to Somerville - Im already all scoped out on Lambertville / New Hope etc area. Ive been to several of the local places - Red Rooster & Blue Fish grill were both excellent, California Grill was above average, Union Hotel was, at least food wise, sub-par. Id love to find a good local Sushi place, Indian place & Pizza place above all. Oishi in Newtown PA was my go to sushi spot until the move - Im hopeful there is somethoing of that quality nearby? Is that wishful thinking??
