Need a buttercream icing recipe that is simple and classic!

Oh man, that's totally where I went wrong. The orig directions said "cook until it starts become thick and then only 1-2 min more, don't make it too thick" so as soon as mine started to be slightly thicker than milk, I turned it off. It was def not stiff paste! :( Well, at least I know how to fix it next time because it sure did taste heavenly! Thanks for the bday wishes. To salvage the thin frosting (I had made a double batch, so it was a lot of butter to waste) I added some cornstarch (gasp!) and cream of tartar and whipped for literally 45 min. It tasted fine, just wasn't super fluffy! Thank so much for the clarification!

Need a buttercream icing recipe that is simple and classic!

I would love more info. Mine was a soupy disaster--it tasted amazing but wouldn't hold together. The frosting kept "melting"/coming apart on me. Roux???? I'm not sure what I did wrong, maybe I didn't cook the roux long enough, it was the consistency of honey. I only was able to add half the roux mixture, it started thinning on me if I added more. It was plenty cool when I added it. Any more directions for us?

So sad, I'm making this the night before my son's 2nd bday and I think I have to bite it and send my husband out to just buy some frosting--ick. :( Would love to know where I went wrong.

Is it ok to refrigerate M&Ms?

Hi Todao, Here is a pic of my cake, it turned out GREAT! If you can, decorate it w/the M&Ms in the hrs before the party, my M&Ms lost a bit of their sheen (hence the edible wax, huh?). ENJOY! It was a great hit! PS, the tray is carboard wrapped w/wrapping paper.

Any ideas for making beets more palatable?

I poke em liberally with a fork, drizzle with olive oil, add rosemary and lots of garlic cloves and wrap this all up in some foil . Roast them for about 45 min (if they're med size). Peel the beets. Fork mash the garlic with some kosher salt and olive oil. Use that as your dressing. Pure beet heaven. This one is also a great dinner party hit. :)

Easy banana desserts for two -- either frozen or heated

Thai banana/coconut milk dessert is SO easy to make. Heat up some coconut milk, add brown sugar (to your sweetness level), vanilla and nutmeg. Throw in some coconut flakes if you want and add the banana chunks. It's super easy and fast. Always a winner at dinner parties.

Red Ganache ?

I'm not sure about baking the cake with the fruit filling, but if you decide to do it as layers, then this is a nice and easy way to do it : heat a good quality raspberry or cherry jam so that it "melts". I then add a little lemon juice (to cut the sweetness). You can easily pour this as a yummy filler layer. This also works beautifully as a smooth glaze for the top of a cake. For your theme, it might be cute to add mini choc chips to the fruit glaze layer and tell the kids it's lava rocks. Good luck!

Is it ok to refrigerate M&Ms?

Is that something you can get at Michael's? Where do you get edible wax? :)

Is it ok to refrigerate M&Ms?

That's great! I looked at a lot of diff options including royal icing, fondant etc. This seemed the most fool proof and the prettiest. For a beginner like me perfect circles made w/icing would be a bit of a challenge and many of the homemade ones I saw online looked kind of messy. I'm using white cake.

Is it ok to refrigerate M&Ms?

I'm making my son's 1st bday cake on Saturday, (party is Sunday). I'm making a chocolate ganache, 2 layer, large sheet version of this M&M "polka dot" cake. (Pic attached, cute, huh?)

There's a great post on CH about refrigerating the ganache cake, but will the M&Ms make it? I don't want them to whiten in the fridge. The party is at noon so it would be a little hard to do the decorating in the morning, but I could do it if I had to. Recommendations? Thanks!

Grocery Outlet - January 2010

Hi all, got an email back from GO corporate:
"The Pinole Grocery Outlet is expecting to have a "soft Opening" on June 17th if all goes on schedule."

Grocery Outlet - January 2010

Does anyone know when the Pinole Grocery Outlet opens? I used to schelp all the way to Berkeley if I really needed stuff, I can't WAIT for them to open. Between Grocery Outlet and the 99 Cents Only store, I'll never need to step into a "regular" grocery store!
