'ethnic' groceries & ready-made food?

Hi everybody!

Will be visiting Montreal in March for a week and will be eating out most of the time (DNA, La Banquise, St-Viateur bagels, Alep/Le Petit Alep, Les Trois Petits Bouchons, Kitchen Galerie + Poisson, Schwartz, Toroli, Au Pied de Cochon, La Chronique, Restaurant Laloux) and visiting Jean-Talon Market several times. There are also some food souvenirs spots on the agenda (+JTM, duck-related items at Le P'tit Plateau...etc.) to take away to Europe.

That said, there are still some gaps in the day and I would love to have your opinion on some neighbourhood pockets for ethnic groceries (Korean, Japanese, Caribbean...etc.; I am not particular) that also offer ready-made food that I can heat up at the hotel (it has a fully fitted-kitchen).

I have tried to find similar threads on the Board, but have came up with this:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/739389

But, having read this other thread and looked at google map, I realised that non-chain ethnic grocery stores might be a better option:

I am staying around La Place Philips, and am relying on public transportation the whole time, so if you can recommend areas within 30-mins travel-radius, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Freekeh - where to buy?

hey thanks - I just found some at the American Armenian Grocery in Pasadena, but haven't tried them. Was yours 'cracked' or 'whole'?

Freekeh - where to buy?

Hi - I'm looking to buy uncooked freekeh (also spelled as frikeh and farik); I know that TJ's used to carry a cooked version. I've tried phoning some of the Middle Eastern grocery stores in the Glendale and Pasadena area, but have not had any luck. I would really appreciate any suggestions - thanks!

Chefs for Louisiana Cookery

Hi guys!

We have finally arrived in your beautiful city and are very looking forward to the good eats. We have, however, another question: What do you think about the James Beard Event 'Chefs for Louisiana Cookery' on Sunday (tomorrow) afternoon?

http://www.emerils.com/newsroom/449/l...

We are thinking about going but haven't decided. We are torn between the price ($100 general admission) and whether or not we'll get anything to eat, and the gathering of all the who's who in the restaurant business.

Any thoughts? Any insights?

Thanks!

Foodstuff to bring back?

That is a definitely a kink they need to work out. Let me just ask this more generally to everyone: do you shop online for food items on a regular basis or do you do it when you're desperately craving and needing things?

Great idea! I usually do that as well, but I'm thinking that perhaps with pickle things, it might make sense to put them into the ziplock first and then into the containers. All then into insulated bags of course. Thanks again!

I will try to think of an alternative way to transport them then. Thanks for the tip!

Best cannoli in nyc?

Is there an updated opinion on the best cannoli in nyc? We have tried Veniero's and found it soggy and the 'flavor' cloying. Something closer to Mike's in Boston would be nice - is Vilabate the place then?

Thanks!

That sounds great! Just to be on the safe side, I would probably get wholes.

Thanks for that! I have been wondering about spice shops and it's great to know a place that we can wander and find 'new' spices. Have you seen rigani there? How do you find the 'freshness' of the spices? Are they usually sold whole or grounded?

We will try it there and see which ones we prefer. Did you request special 'packing' or did R&D pack it in plastic containers?

That's been my impression so far as well. They aren't bad, but there isn't something to lit up your buds to go 'wow'. Will try the asparagus if I can manage to get it.

Thanks Kathryn - that was a fun read! It has not been too strict in Norway so I have managed to get most things back; including fresh fruits...etc.

ah, the 'smell' of Moss :)

I am still very partial to American pickles (sigh..the taste of home). Are the half sour pickels from R&D the sparkly looking green ones and the full sour the more full color ones?

Thanks Coasts - I am able to get peppadews by me, although, as you rightly noted, they aren't exactly easily available. I thought that Chelsea Market does some wild version that I should try :)

Thanks for pointing it out though!

Yes, I second that: sable at R&D's are amazing. We also had the white fish and the smokiness shined through very clearly. The interaction with R&D people is certainly worth the trip.

We have amazing salmon in all forms in Norway :)

Will definitely look for those mini flat bagels when we're there - haven't seen those last time.

Thanks for the tip about R&D's pickles - we've only picked up a few bottles of Rick's Picks and they were okay.

International transit (15-20 hours) - meat works well if they are either frozen or smoked and put into insulated bags; I've tried and tested this and they have worked for me. Haven't seen the NPR clip, but, um, I am not at all surprised by this :)

we compared amy ruth's and sylvia's and found that we prefer amy ruth's - it has more 'soul'.

Seems like bagels and bialys are the way to go - any suggestions on transport? Is freezing a good option? (Of course, I will eat as many there as I can - I heard *fresh* is the key.)

Also, what hours would you recommend getting to these places - I assume that they have different hours every day for fresh batches?

Thanks!

Hey guys - I will be visiting NYC in Feb and was wondering what foodstuff you would recommend bringing back?

I am interested in things that I cannot get in Los Angeles and in Europe (West).

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!
