Where to buy bagels and lox for a large party?
Good news. And their smoked whitefish salad is the best in the city (IMHO)
Where to buy bagels and lox for a large party?
Granted this is after the fact, but we host an annual lox and bagel fest every New Year's Day (for around 50 guests) and the slabs from Costco are surprisingly good and well received. In fact they recently changed their packaging from a single 1.5lb slab to two in roughly half portions which means not all of it has to be opened at once. They also sell 3lb tubs of Philly cream cheese that are perfect. I get the bagels from Noah's and fax them the order a week in advance so they are all prepared.
recommendations for 10th anniversary dinner
we do NOT want a raucous restaurant. Truly anything with a good range - steak for me, salmon for my wife, and we are not big drinkers so it would be at most a glass of wine per person. Decor would be preferable
recommendations for 10th anniversary dinner
probably no more than $100/pp
We do enjoy pretty much all cuisines (save for Thai and Indian)
And we are looking at the first weekend in June
recommendations for 10th anniversary dinner
We'll be in Manhattan for our anniversary. Ironically I grew up on the UWS but have been living on the other coast for 20 years. As such I have really no notion of where to go these days (and what might still be around).
So - looking for a place that doesn't have to be uber expensive or stuffy, but is a special experience. I do recall a place in the Village that I went to - probably 25 years ago? - that was in an older historic building that felt like you were dining in colonial times? VERY lovely - but I surely cannot recall the name.
Any and all recommendations are welcome.
Thanks
dinner walking distance from the Pantages
We're thinking we might take the subway down to the Pantages this weekend. If so - where can we get dinner within walking distance of the theater?
BDay/VDay wekend in Santa Barbara. Any place we absoluetly must try?
Going up to SB for my Birthday/VDay weekend.
We are looking for something new so any and all recommendations (must trys) are welcome.
Thanks
Christmas Eve in Pasadena
Any recommendations? We're not looking for a traditional "Xmas dinner" per se, but hoping to find a good place that is in fact open on Xmas eve.
recommendation for a Italian in the SFV this eve
I think we've pretty much done the gamut from Ca Del Sole to Vitello's to Prosecco, and so on....What hidden gem have we missed?

Athena(sp?) in place of where Spazio's used to be?
Driving east on Ventura Blvd. just now I notice that Spazio's is now closed (never understood the allure: average food and inflated prices). Does anyone have any insight into the new establishment going in there?

I too was dismayed - not sure if it is closed or just shut for a remodel?
dim sum recommendation
We will be visiting (converging from NYC and Los Angeles) and looking for good dim sum.
OR - is there a recommendation for a place that specializes in XLB/scallion pancakes, and the like?
V.I.P. overthrown in Palace coup
agreed - A&W is very disappointing. In fact I was there about 5 weeks ago right when they opened on a weekday morning and despite the fact that you would think there would be fresh items to be had, it was all bland and prepared with a very heavy hand. Very unimpressed.
The potstickers/steamed dumplings and scallion pancakes across the street at Mandarin Deli are infinitely more satisfying.
For now we will continue to make the sojourn from the Valley to Ocean Seafood downtown

what's going on at Chadney's in Burbank
After having been dormant for years there is now some serious construction work going on at the old Chadney's site. Does anyone have any insight as to what might be going in there?
Chi Dynasty coming to Studio City
After looking at their menu on-line, is there anything unique about or special that will sway me from going to Bamboo?

looking for a Yashima (on Pico) type of place in the SFV
We do enjoy Yashima but it is a bit of a trek from the Valley, especially on a week night.
Any recommendations for similar offerings in the Valley?

Taverna 8 1/2 - Studio City on Moorpark
I must concur with gf. We went about three weeks after it had been opened. Parking can be a challenge and you're in competition for the few non-permitted spots with 4 other restaurants within striking distance.
The place is very hip and trendy and OSHA citation waiting to happen loud. The place is essentially a bar with some food offerings (and an oddly designed space). Since we did not seemingly fit the demographic they were striving for we were relegated to a corner table by the back door even though there were other open two tops.
When we finally did get someone to take our order we were informed of a few other specials and opted to split the tagliatelle in a cream truffle sauce along with the tuna tartare bites and the cod fish and chips.
The fish and chips were tasty, the tuna uninspired, and the pasta just OK.
And yes - quite pricey for what it is: the above food and two glasses of wine + tip was almost $80!!!
We will be hard pressed to return
Best restaurant to celebrate after proposing
After I proposed we went to Geoffrey's in Malibu and we still go there annually to celebrate the anniversary of the proposal (9 years now...) Very good food and nice cool ocean breezes especially on a hot summer night.

Looking for great pizza place in Sherman Oaks/Studio City Area
I have recently become a fan of Little Toni's Pizza. Great flavor and the cheese texture is just great as it cools slightly. Plus - they will pre-cook the pepperoni and bacon (just ask) so it comes out good and crispy.
I second Caoti and even Vitello's. Joe Peeps is ultimately more schtick than anything else and

Ralph's Herb de Provence rotisserie chicken seasoning (moved from L.A. board)
Much to my dismay it appears as though Ralph's no longer makes their Herbs de Provence chicken due to their new policy of reducing salt in their prepared foods. I actually bought some of the seasoning a while back (the deli counter server filled a large take-out salad container, weighed it as though it was from the salad bar......I made out like a bandit).
But alas - it is now no longer available. Does anyone happen to know who supplied that seasoning?
Thanks
Taverna 8 1/2 soon to open in Studio City
Anyone have any info on this place? The site has been seemingly doomed for restaurant survival for quite some time but there are now signs of a life and a new sign. What gives?

Need lunch suggestions - Lankershim/Magnolia in NoHo
have yet to go to the KC BBQ but just followed the link to their menu - sure does seem expensive.....
BBQ Birthday in the SFV
well - I would vote for the Bear Pit. We have never had a bad meal there. I know people are rather passionate about their views on BBQ, but I have always found the beef ribs amazing and the baby backs are very good indeed. So shy of venturing out to some unknown joint and wading into the morass of Tony Roma's or Cecil's I recommend the Bear Pit (have never been a fan of Hoggly Woggly).
And whatever you do stay clear of The Swinging Door BBQ @ Vanowen and Vineland

smoked fish
I used to live near the Bagel Broken adn was addicted (OK - I still am) to their whitefish salad. ACME makes a very good smoked WF salad. They usually have it at Cambridge Farms (Whitset and Burbank) and the Western Bagel @ VB and Coldwater also serves it.

sushi recommendation in Encino or Tarzana?
Our Thursday sushi foursome is looking for some place new. We normally hit the Studio City / Sherman Oaks area (Taka/Matsuda/Midori/Iwata) - but can venture further west for something new (but not Octopus....). Any and all suggestions would be most welcomed.....
