Kula Revolving Sushi: J-Town

OK, better than I thought it might be, though nothing earth-shattering. Place only seats about 30, and they presently, at least last night, had eight or nine visible chefs, waitresses, bus-people. About a half-hour wait, at a time when Frying Fish, about 25 yards away, had empty chairs.

Sushi pretty good, though the eel was cut raggedly, the hand-rolls (special request, but still $2) not anything like neatly done' (sorta slapped together) and I suspect, from the pretty crayon-box red of the tuna, that it was gassed. Still, for $2? Better than Todai, better than some other places.

Kula Revolving Sushi: J-Town

Understanding that this is NOT going to be the same experience as Shibucho, or even Gen (and that I've actually had perfectly wonderful conveyor belt sushi, but only in Tokyo)

SO.......
how is it? Better than Ralphs' pre-made? Better than Todai? Better than Frying Fish? As good as Noshi?

Guerrero-an food, DTLA

Does anyone know if these folks are CONNECTED in any way with "Tacos Guerrero"?

Downtown LA restaurant reviews

Cuccina Rustica:

Almond/Chicken salad: a perennial on the "specials" menu: pretty darn good; various pastas with scallops/shrimp: mostly pretty good, and priced more reasonably than:

Bottega Louie: the loudest restaurant I've ever eaten in that didn't involve amplified music. Food unremarkable, though as noted, they make good coffee. Service ALWAYS spotty.

Gil's (lunch only) an acceptable AYCE Indian lunch buffet; naan very good.

Did Your Mom Repeatedly Cook a Dish You Despised?

My Mom tried to be adventurous for her time ( for 3years we lived 3 blocks from Sunset Magazine); my mother-in-law, when I met my wife, however, thought it was a great "time-saver" to pre-cook pasta and freeze it in plastic bags. Oh yes, and my step-grandmother made a Jello-sour-cream-and-frozen-blueberries thing which she brought to Thanksgivings and which became infamous as " Martha's Blue Mold".

Are there any decent vegetarian tamale options?

There's green corn tamales, which I believe are vegetarian, though not vegan; it's past the season for them at El Cholo, but not at some other places...

Spiciest dish on the Westside?

Got to second the Jitlada shout-out. I had one of the Southern Thai curries (crab with pineapple, maybe?) and asked for it "Thai medium". My life flashed before my eyes...in a good way, but still, a psychedelic experience....

Mince pies with real meat in LA?

A mammal-eating friend wants to take a minceMEAT pie to a T-day party; anyone know of a good source in LA? He says he'll live with beef in place of venison....

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

'tis "PDC".

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

Anyone else got anything else?

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

Except where it says they open at 8.....

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

as does the Pantry. I'm old enough that I still remember Vickman's as a go-to breakfast place; IIRC they were open 2 am to 2 pm....

...and while I think Huyge ("Hyge"? "Hyuge"?) (That Danish place!) has great baked goods, they really don't have much of anywhere to sit and eat...

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

Looks tasty, but they don't start til 8:30. Outside of Silverlake, who the heck STARTS serving breakfast at 8:30?

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

see the line referencing Pantry, above; I like their food, but their ambiance does not scream "business breakfast"....

Business breakfast downtown: new possibilities?

I still belong to the same networking group which calls upon me to have a business breakfast with two other members at least once a month. So, are there new GOOD places downtown?

Here's what I know so far:

PDC: Good, but PRICEY,...

Pantry: crowded, noisy, it is what it is...same for Philipe's; neither conducive to much conversation below a yell..

The hotels: generally quiet (except for the Standard), but painfully overpriced...

Nickel Diner: guess it depends on what biz you think I'm in....

The chains (IHOP, Denny's) too depressing; if we at least had a NORM's, or Copper Penny, fer cryin' out loud....

Daily Grill: Doesn't do breakfast anymore.

Botegga Louie: SLOW service, and even at breakfast, mind-bogglingly loud...

So what else is around?

Greek groceries in LA

I'd add to Carln's suggestions those branches of Jon's which adjoin Armenian and Russian neighborhoods; note that what Jon's carries seems to vary significantly from branch to branch. (The branch on Vermont in Hollywood seems to be the only one, for instance, which regularly has Cara Bakery's sourdough corn rye bread!)

best vietnamese restaurant

I think you're likely to be asked to be more specific; there's a range of specialty restaurants, and a range of price-points, and the best place for a banh mi (sandwich) isn't the best place for the seven-course beef, which isn't the best place for noodles, which isn't the best place for the catfish...

Tarte Tatin

Must say that when we've had it at Cafe Beaujolais, the Woman In The Hat has been happy.

What's the Bakery like 85C in Arcadia/SanMarino area?

Crystaw got it; per the Woman In The Hat's viewing of the pic on the Yelp review, it was indeed Cloverleaf...

What's the Bakery like 85C in Arcadia/SanMarino area?

Amidst all the flurry of hype about the second US branch of 85C in Hacienda Hts.,, I remembered that while wandering in the SGV one weekend in the last year or so, with the Woman In The Hat, we'd ended up at a bakery/coffee place that had, among other things, taro rolls and squid-ink-cheese bread. Can anyone ID it for me?

Downtown (Near 7th/Fig) Lunch Deals

Per last week's Downtown News, Primavera's remodeling. Zucca's definitely gone, and a new place should be in the space within this year, though unlikely to hit this price point, just like Zucca.

Do you order take away from restaurants that you would never actually eat at?

I don't know of anyone who regards any branch of Zankou as a "dine in" destination; they have many fans of their food, though.

Burbank "India's Tandoori"; any recent thoughts?

I still remember this place from twenty or so years ago, when it was pretty much an "India's Oven" clone, right down to the font and order of the dishes on the menu; it then went WAY downhill, and then closed for quite a while.

Now I see it's re-opened, and seems to be doing some business.

Assuming that I'm going to be in the greater Burbank area this PM, and assuming I go with the understanding that it's BURBANK, not Artesia, how is it?

Your Favorite Tacos Downtown

Back again with the Pup, and two of his homey-ettes on Thursday; more of everything; many vamprios and cachetadas, with various salsa combinations. Brilliant.

Best place you ate at this week?

The downtown branch of Rustica is around the corner from my office, (have to walk past Engine Company to get there) and it's becoming my business lunch place of choice. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service, noise level at lunch is not mind-bending (compared with, say, Bottega Louie).

Downtown LA recs.

Other Italian within a couple of blocks, some of which may or not be open on Sunday night, include Cuccina Rustica (Wilshire and Figueroa) Bella Cucina (Fig and Olympic).
Sushi: Go to J-town, Gen or Go-55 are less "idiosyncratic" than Sugarfish; almost NO sushi places will be open on Sunday, so call first.
French dip: surprised the Phillipe's partisans haven't come out in strength; I think it's better than Cole's, and isn't "fake old" the way Cole's now is.

Best place you ate at this week?

Toss-up; Cam the Man's in town, so we hit Marouch, Spicy Thai BBQ, and Tacos Mexicali, all good, so far this week, 'cause you can't get food like that in Columbus, Ohio...

*incredibly* skimpy portion sizes at jitlada

Cam the Man reports he was underwhelmed by the mudfish curry a couple of weeks back. Jitlada should know better than to mess with a pregnant person!

OTOH, Spicy Thai BBQ's portions, on Monday, were fine, and they've got some interesting northern stuff on their menu, too! They still need to get their front door fixed though; it's apparently been a problem for years...

Favorite foodie ethnic neighborhoods?

AND Lebanese (Marouch) AND avant-garde ice cream (Scoops)...

Cara brand sourdough rye: anywhere besides Jon's on Vermont?

Found this brand of (I think locally baked) sourdough rye at the Vermont Jon's, but they don't stock it at any of their other branches that I've seen (SM Bl., Glendale, N. Glendale) Anyone seen it somewhere else?
