Cheapest Sushi in LA?

I'm REALLY leery of "bargain sushi", and particularly AAYE sushi, but, Gen's table-service lunch special (get there early, and expect to wait if you don't) and Noshi are the only "sushi bargains" that I trust consistently, though I note that Octopus (downtown) has a "50% off" weekday sushi lunch list...

Buying ground chicory in Los Angeles?

Don't know whether there's a world-wide chicory shortage, but I ended up in NOLA in May, and had to ask around/look around a good bit before I could find straight chicory even there! Brought back 2 lb. when I found it!

My High School Culinary Society: where should we go near the SGV?

Grand Central Market downtown, (though it's a mere shadow of its heyday); the Mercado La Paloma down by USC, for Yucatecan, Oaxacan, and Peruvian; C&K for Greek

Any, I mean any good restaurants in Burbank?

Knight Restaurant, in the "downtown Burbank restaurant row". As I've said before, if you've lived around Glendale, or East Hollywood, there's nothing on the menu that you haven't seen in a bunch of other Armenian/Mediterranian kebab places, but the food is always tasty and competently prepared, the staff and owners are solicitous, and the prices are reasonable.

I've got to say, as someone who ate in Pomodoros in San Francisco, and liked 'em, long before there was one in Burbank, the concept didn't necessarily travel well.

where to buy quality smoked salmon for a great price? hollywood/weho/los feliz etc.

The various Russian/Armenian oriented ethnic grocers (Jon's, SuperKing) have an assortment of smoked fishes of varying quality, almost all at rock-bottom prices.

Where to eat on a budget near Disney Hall??

I'd give serious thought (as I look out the window at 4 pm) only to places adjoining the Red Line stops. or with shuttles, because it may be pouring again shortly, and while I'd normally suggest that the walk to/from Little Tokyo was a pleasant jaunt, tonight maybe not so much. So look around the 7th and Fig/Metro stop.

Dosa Truck?

If the "frankies" were taco-, rather than burrito-sized, they've been "reconcepted", and the $3 price suggests that they have been. "Frankies", and particularly, the LAMB frankie, have been around LA as comparatively-cheap-but-good-gringo-friendly Indian food ('cause they could say "It's like a burrito, but Indian!") for a decade or more.

Gotta say, these "truck-dosa prices" sound significantly higher than ISS, where you can actually sit down. You don't get to sit in a very FANCY place, but you do actually get to sit down, and Los Feliz even has a parking lot!

Chichen Itza 6th Street Closing?

Gaqhhh! I'm crushed! Where will I get Pan De Cazon for the Woman in The Hat on the way home from work? . . and the Westsiders working downtown, the ones who thought even the 6th Street location was in "a dicey part of town"; what will possibly induce them to go to dinner at the Mercado?

Ready made Middle Eastern lula kebabs for party

I know that both SuperKing and the Glendale Jon's sell lula, and sell the broader,
flatter skewers (sorta sword-like) which allow you to cook 'em without having just roll around on the skewer, but I can't imagine anyone selling pre-formed raw ones, given how easy it is to form 'em, and how difficult it'd be to pack and carry pre-formed raw ones...

Turkish Restaurants

There are a couple of quite good Turkish places (neither of which I'm sure serves dinner, though) in the "Jewelry District Alley" downtown. Because of concern (well-founded or not) over political protests/pressure from the Armenian community, some Turkish places in Los Angeles tend to brand themselves as simply "Mediterranean" in their ads and signage.

Guilty pleasure - Where to find Hostess Berry Fruit Pies

I'm going out on a limb here to suggest that the berry glop in Hostess pies (for which I'll acknowledge a childhood weakness) is prepared in vast bulk amounts during the fresh season since it's essentially canned pie filling, and stored until needed.

The killer grocery store fried pies, though, are the ones in New Orleans.

very short review of bottega louis tonight

It's three blocks from my office.

I've got to agree about the acoustics; they'd have been hard-pressed to design the place to make it any LOUDER. (had business lunch there a couple of weeks ago with a group that included some folks with audio engineering experience). "Deafening" doesn't = "Must be popular", it just equals "Should have figured out how to control sound levels".

Food pretty good, though pricey in comparison with other Italian places around.

Meyer Lemons

NO, the ones I've gotten at Superking were definitely not "just regular lemons, but maybe rebranded to trick you"; they were rounder, way thinner-skinned, way less acid. LOOKED more like Meyers than like Eurekas, but as AAQjr says, tasted not as complex as my old tree's Meyers. I was willing to acknowledge the possibility that they maybe just weren't very GOOD, well-stored and well-shipped Meyers.

Chowhound Post

Meyer Lemons

From time to time at some of the grocers serving the Armenian and Russian communities (Jon's, SuperKing) I've seen stacks of what were identified as "sweet lemons", which were quite thin-skinned and which appeared to quite possibly be Meyers (my old house had a dwarf Meyer tree, so I sorta know what they look like without cutting 'em open) and about a quarter of the price that Gelson's would charge. Worth a look.

The cost of a Sazerac...

My mama taught me never to order anything without knowing its price, or at least having a pretty good idea what it was. Bars will charge whatever patrons will pay, at least until we have socialized bartending....

Gumbo?

Well, that's a major part of the difference, along with taxes, workers' comp coverage, insurance, licensing, and the cost of getting decent gumbo ingredients here. (Just as Bourdain observed that if the only fish you can get is some farm-raised salmon, you're barkin' up the wrong tree if you try to make real boulibaise, if the only thing you can get are some pre-cooked frozen thawed shrimp and an oyster in a jar, don't try to make seafood gumbo!)

That, and there's simply no real serious demand. Los Angeles keeps about as many Cajun/Creole restos going at a time as they do clubs with live jazz; new ones open only when or after one closes. There's just no way you'll likely ever see a bunch of places in Los Angeles selling (at least passable, if not damn good) gumbo for $5.00 a bowl, like in New Orleans...

Colori Kitchen or Drago Centro for business lunch?

While I like Colori, they're neither quiet at lunch, nor are they a place to take new biz contacts you are trying to impress.

If you want a similar degree of informality, but a little more polished, and the possibility of hearing yourself think, you might consider Liberty Grill. The twin cheap Italian pasta places, Olive (on Olive) and pasta Primavera have both been so, well, "quiet" the last few times I've been that I'm worried about their viability.

If you're counting Drago Centro in your price range (and you're talking, if not an actual different number of digits than Colori, close to it; last time I ate at Colori, some of their lunch entrees still bubbled under $10; you can't even really get a salad at Drago for that) there's a number of very good places downtown, ranging from the Water Grill and Patina at the top end, down through Zucca, Pinot Bistro (NOT particularly quiet) Engine Co., the restaurants at the Standard and Checkers, the new Latin places (Provecho and Rivera) etc.

Cemitas trucks/locations west of ELA?

Having gotten no substantial response to my inquiry about the cemitas truck on 8th just east of Alavarado, I figured I'd broaden my inquiry, both for myself and the Chowpup, rapidly becoming a TACO truck afficionado. Where are there good cemitas to be had, west of the river, north of Pico, and east of, say, Western?

Cemitas poblanas truck on 8th at Alvarado: any info?

I've passed it for months on my way home from work, about 3-4 blocks east of Alvarado, north side of the street. I'm interested, The Woman In The Hat, who mostly doesn't do food from trucks, isn't. Anyone have any info/insight with which I might persuade her that a quick stop for a chicken mole cemitas might be worth the time?

thanks

China Islamic Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles?

I have a vague recollection of what this might have been. This address is just west of McArthur Park, I think, and IIRC, a while ago (20 yrs.?) there was a "Chinese Islamic" place in what was then the "William Penn Hotel". I never ate there, nor do I know anyone who ever did.

Best Prepared Grocery Store Chicken to Go?

They've been way variable in the past, in part because their deli operation has apparently changed hands several times, but I believe SuperKing Markets in-house roti chicken is consistently the the least expensive; when they throw a special they're TWO for $10 or $11
(that's TWO WHOLE CHICKENS!)

Buca di Beppo, but not? Where?

In Sunland/Tujunga, on Foothill, is Dominic's ("Dominick's"?), which is sort of what Buca pretends to be. It's a classic "old-red sauce Italian" resto, with enormous portions of actually very tasty food. The Woman in The Hat once referred to their Chicken cacciatore as "Rodan cacciatore", it's so large. The resto was, last time I was there, staffed largely by members of the owner's family. Cam the Chow-Pup had his first pasta in a resto there, seventeen years ago.
