Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

OK.....tatoo this on your brain......Never, I repeat Never, go to Parkway Poboys and Tavern on the Sunday before Marde Gras. Why you may ask? Because you'll have to wait in a line 160 persons long just to get a freakin' Poboy. Was the wait worth it? You bet it was!!! Thank God for Beer! It's truly an awesome site to sit and watch 200 people enjoying New Orlean's Best PoBoy. An impressive site it was! That place was packed....PACKED! You have to wait in line and order at the order window, then walk around to the pickup window, then find a place to sit. I was in a full blown beer sweat by the time I found my place at the bar. It was almost two hours of waiting before I took my first bite. Not the biggest but without a doubt the tastiest poboy I've had in a long time. I will definitely go on an off day next time. Next time I go with the Oyster. Liuzza's is next. I still like the breading on the Shrimp and Oysters at Johnny's Poboys the best....can't quite put my finger on it, but Damn that breading is tasty. later...........

I will be going to Parkway Bakery and Tavern today during the Parades in New Orleans...............it was just named Top Po-boy Shop by Nola.com and Gambit Magazine for 2009. I hear the Po-boys there are Outstanding! Will come back with a post later on tonight......when I go back tomorrow, I will try and go to Cochon.....a true Cajun eatery off St. Charles. Wentr there when they first opened, but everyone i talk to says its much better now. Plus I just saw the article on the ChowHound Web site. be back later.........................oh yeah, Peter's Po-boys in Hattiesburg was Awesome!!! Huge Po-boy and stuffed with shrimp to the point they were just falling out of the parchment paper wrapping. Loved It!!! So far.....tops on my list!

Where is BB's in Ocean Springs? haven't heard of this place yet? Lil Rays apparently has gone down hill. What I had there was just OK......I was not impressed....but I always try places twice before making a concrete decision. Keep the locations coming.......anyone got any locations in Hattiesburg that I might could check out.......so far I've been told Peter's Po-Boys is a sure fire winner........something about a Po-Boy called the Shrimp Bomb? We'll see!

Who has the Best Po-Boys in South Mississippi?

I just had a Fayard's Shrimp/Oyster po-boy at the location on Pass Rd. in Biloxi........one of the brothers still runs that location. They seem to have the same staff everytime I go. I went to the Fayard's in D'Iberville and it was horrible. They had some high school kid working in the back while the owner was out talking to a customer.......I waited 25 minutes for my Shrimp Po-boy......now this was about two months ago, but c'mon.....25 minutes? I do like'em pressed though. Trying a place in Hattiesburg this upcoming week.......I hear a small run down gas station on HWay 15 North, near Stone County also makes a mean Po-boy. Will get back with you on how those were also. I would say out of all the Fayard's locations that the one on Pass Road is by far the best and most consistent.

I did happen to go to Pirate's Cove today. Quite good!!! No frills, decent prices and they recommend a bottle of Barq's with your order. I LIKE THAT! The counter girl told me next time to order their Combo....which is Roast Beef and Ham with a bit of gravy. It smelled damn good. I had the shrimp....nice, hot and well dressed. Pressed just a bit. I like that too! Keeps everything nice and neat for us messy folks. Good Po-Boy and they were covered up with customers. They use Liedenhiemer bread from New Orleans......good stuff. I also thought the Deer Hunting Game in the waiting area was a nice touch......it was being played constantly while I was there. Enjoyed the trip! Will be going back!

What are some French Quarter Eateries for a low budget

Mother's( which is just outside the quarter), The Gumbo Shop on St. Peters near Jackson Square, Johnny's Po-boys, Cafe Maspero's (the one on Decatur), Napoleon House (Hot Muffaletta), Cafe Du Monde (beignets and coffee) and Lunch at Bacco........the key is not where you eat, it's what you eat. If I were you, I would just tell them to eat nothing but Appetizers the whole trip. They can eat wherever they want, but just appetizers. Tell them to ask for their signature Appetizer, which is usually a pretty good portion, and enjoy. That way they can order and eat whatever they like.....it will just be a smaller portion size and cheaper. SECRET: Most restaurant's signature dishes are appetizers anyway.....not entrees. So in other words, the tastiest dishes are on the appetizer menu. The last thing you want, is to be walking around the French Quarter STUFFED. So tell them to eat apps. and desserts and enjoy the Quarter. Then when they get back.......you go and enjoy.......alone!!

Kelly's......this is the first I've heard of this place. Will add it to the list. Sometime these little eateries at these out-of-the-way gas stations can conjour up some good eats. Thanks for the tip!

Ideas for Pizza Toppings

Down here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Shrimp are cheap and in abundance!! Just make a pizza margherita and top it with raw peeled shrimp, salt and pepper with a touch of fresh garlic.......bake the pie like normal and the shrimp will be perfectly cooked, with a crunch on the outside and soft on the inside.......at first you'll get some funny looks but after that first bite.......it's all smiles!

I am a food writer living in South Mississippi. Having just moved here from Orlando, I am obsessed with Southern Style Po-Boys. What I want to know is, who has the best?.......I am searching from Hattiesburg down to the Gulf Coast.....if you have any comments about great Po-boys anywhere else, don't hesitate to comment. After I acquire a good list......it off on a roadtrip to find out which one of these delicious sandwiches delights my tastebuds the most. Will keep you updated on my favorites. Thanks for the help!

freshly made deer sausage with a sweet red sauce and asiago cheese is delicious.......olive oil, garlic, basil, oregano, mozz. cheese, clams and shrimp is a wonderful combination if you have the means..........crawfish, andouille sausage, asiago, mozz, carmelized onions and green pepper with a sweet red sauce is a winner too. ..............always top a hot pizza with leaves of fresh basil
