Wedding Caterer Suggestions - Arlington/Cambridge

I contacted Something Savory about possible event catering last spring. We'd eaten at the restaurant shortly before it closed and really liked the food. They never got back to me with menus and did not respond to several phone messages. I assumed they'd closed up shop.

H-Mart?

Drove by yesterday. There are shopping carts in the parking lot.

Breakfast near Shannon Airport

Hello, hounds,

We are a three-generation family group of six who will be flying into Shannon early Tuesday morning. We'll then have a two-hour drive to Cork.

We'd like to start off with a good breakfast as soon as possible when we get out of the airport. Do you have any recommendations for a pleasant breakfast where one of our party can get a gluten-free meal? We'd prefer something reasonably priced, so fancy hotels are probably out.

Thanks.

Is H-Mart in Burlington Dead?

Drove by yesterday and there were trucks (roofing and concret) and workers all over the place.

Affordable, Pleasant, Vegetarian-Friendly N. End Rec Sought

Next Tuesday, three friends and I are heading to the N. End for a rare night out. We'd like to eat ina pleasant atmosphere that's quiet enough for talking, in a place with an interesting/creative menu that has some good options for the vegetarian in the group.

Does anything fit the bill? I rarely dine in the N. End; I've been to Marco twice and liked it very much, but it's a bit above the budget this time. We'd like to get out for

Thanks for any suggestions.

Drying a salami

My grandmother always had a kosher salami hanging by the pull string of the light over her kitchen sink. I never understood why, but I do now.

What's on your breakfast menu?

A really good (dense, chewy) whole wheat bagel, toasted, then topped with avocado, sliced tomato, a little salt and aleppo pepper.

Extra Tortillas: What do you do?

They keep for ages in a closed plastic bag in the refrigerator.

way too many onions

Make caramelized onions. Search on chowhound or in google and you'll find all the info you need.

Rinsing Quinoa

Use a sieve instead of a colander. Works perfectly.

Chowhype

Dalya's in Bedford.

Irish Oatmel - how to speed up?

Put oatmeal, water and salt in a pot the night before. Bring to a boil, then turn off. Let sit overnight. It will need just a short cooking time in the morning. Make a big batch then just take what you want each day, add a little milk and heat in microwave or on stove over lowish heat.

Parents' 50th--NEED KOSHER FOOD

We used Catering by Motti (http://www.cateringbymotti.com/) for a 50th anniversary lunch for my parents last year. It was a wonderful experience and the food was far better than Catering by Andrew, which I've had many times. His menus are creative, the food was fresh and delicious and Motti was very nice to work with. I thought his prices were reasonable, too.

READING MARKET BASKET

I like the Burlington store, too. It's a bit run-down, and is certainly cramped and crowded, but I like the old-fashioned feel. The staff have a great attitude and every cash register is staffed by an actual human being! In addition, the prices are unbeatable.

Matzoh Bagels

Passover bagels (called passover rolls if made with no hole in the middle) are a completely different animal than a regular bagel. The texture is more like a popover than a bagel--they are rich and eggy inside, crisp outside. I've never seen one for sale commercially but they are easy to make. There are lots of recipes available online.

What's your "go-to" recipe for a crowd?

Chicken Marbella

anything decent in Lexington???

Funny, we've had some opposite experiences--awful lunch at Dalya's and a couple of very good dinners at Lexx.

We like Scutra, too.

Ideas for exotic hamantaschen fillings?

Nutella.
Apricot (not jam, but filling made from apricot paste)
Try old-fashioned yeast-dough hamantaschen. They are wonderful!

Please post one NEW chowish find

Via lago does have some good stuff, though counter service during the day can be iffy. Just a little correction: Joe Rancatore is the brother of Gus, who owns Toscanini's, but the two businesses are separate.

Tried & True German Chocolate Cake

I've done very well with the recipe in the Fannie Farmer Cookbook, by Marion Cunningham.

Overnight cinnamon rolls

These are risen overnight and cooked fresh in the morning, but the problem is you have to do a 30-minute proof in the oven in the morning, over a pan of boiling water, then preheat the oven, then bake them--so it's about 90 minutes from putting the water on to boil to getting finished buns.

Crock pots for something other than stew?

What an array of ideas! And not a single one calls for a can of "condensed cream of anything" soup.

A French Laundry Dinner at Home

This is incredible. Did you really do it all without help? Serving and clearing, too?

What to do with leftover cranberry sauce?

Cook brisket in it.

No Knead Bread Question

My house is in the low 60s overnight. I turn the oven on for 2 mins, turn it off then put the dough bucket in for the night. The oven feels warm when I put my hand in. It doesn't stay warm all night, but if I just leave the dough on the counter not much has happened when I check it in the morning.

Latke quantity help! (And zucchini??)

Wow, that's a lotta latkes!
My mother used 10 lbs of potatoes for 8 adults, 4 kids for her latke fest tomorrow.
I think mixing in some shredded zucchini is a great idea. Just squeeze out as much of the water as you can. Some sweet potatoes mixed in with the white is nice, too.

Help - gluten free cake or cookie recipe needed

This flourless chocolate cake is very good and not as heavy and rich as many. It's also quick and easy: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Flourless-Chocolate-Cake-II/Detail.aspx

We also like this pear and almond tart, in which I sub corn or potato starch for the flour: http://www.recipezaar.com/55252

Light pre-dinner Thanksgiving nibbles to accommodate dietary restrictions

Okay... I'm hosting dinner this year for a mixed crowd of adults and children. I want to keep the pre-dinner eats light, so people won't fill up. I am looking for suggestions for appetizers that meet the following criteria:

-Finger food--don't want to have to mess with plates and forks
-Gluten-free, for a family member with celiac disease. Bread or crackers on the side are fine as I have rice crackers he can eat.
-Dairy-free, as many of the guests keep kosher. This rules out cheeses and yogurt- or cheese-based dips. Therefore, also pork- and shellfish-free.
-Some of the items must be nut free as one guest has a nut allergy.

We're tired of hummus. I am thinking marinated olives, sweet potato chips (commercial), maybe a bowl of nut-free trail mix, maybe some roasted chickpeas.

Other thoughts?

Best sandwich I ever invented

Sliced homegrown heirloom tomato, avocado, real smoked cheddar (from Oscar's Smokehouse), aleppo pepper on a toasted high-quality sesame bagel.
