Beets?

This was kind of my thinking. Should finally get around to this tonight! Bought brussel sprouts to shave and roast in a pan with some bacon fat!

Beets?

I discovered I like beets. I had a fantastic little 'napoleon' that included beets, goat cheese, walnuts and something else.

So I bought 2 beets - what should I do with them???

Fun Kid-Friendly Restaurants in the Ellenville/Newburgh area?

We're staying in New Windsor/Newburgh and will be in Ellenville for hiking. Any recommendations? Any can't miss places? I've got a 5-year-old who isn't too picky! BBQ or comfort food would be a plus!

We'll be hiking Ice Caves so we'll work up an appetite!

Great Burgers on South Shore of LI? (Suffolk)

It's a little far from me, but will add them to my list! Was looking more for a recommendation in the Islip/Bay Shore area. Even Babylon.

That is definitely a bargain though that I'm going to have to try!!

Great Burgers on South Shore of LI? (Suffolk)

I have a lot of great burger places stashed away in my mental files. They're either in Nassau near work or on the north shore. I have yet to find a great burger close to home (Islip).

Any suggestions?

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - February 2013 [OLD]

Oh - I know this isn't a food product, but the Trader Joe's Coconut Body Butter is amazing. It's supposed to rival The Body Shop's body butter and to me it outperforms. The scent is wonderful without being overpowering, it absorbs really well and leaves no greasy residue. Perfect for the winter!

YAY - Juice in a Box. They were demo-ing it this weekend. Was refreshing, delicious, had no preservative-ish taste and the little one loved it as much as I did!

Need Sides for Chili Lime Shrimp!

Wound up doing the cilantro lime rice and corn and black bean salsa.

That epicurious recipe for the shrimp is awesome! :)

Ooh - do you have a recipe for the salsa???

Need Sides for Chili Lime Shrimp!

Good question - it's really what it says - chili powder, a smidge of brown sugar, lime, some red pepper flake. It's broiled after marinating.

I'm thinking Asian - which is why I plan on roasted radishes which are done with some soy and sesame seeds and are delicious.

Ah, I'm so not a fan of coconut...and I hate having to prep mango.

Quinoa as a side dish, not a salad

Great minds! :)

I do exactly what you do with dried porcinis! It makes the quinoa so flavorful imo.

I usually add asparagus or other veggies to mine and top with a peppery tuscano cheese.

When I want a quick lunch, I mix some with Seabrook creamed spinach and top with the cheese again.

Need Sides for Chili Lime Shrimp!

I'm kind of at a loss for what to side up with this recipe for chili lime shrimp (basically broiled in a chili lime marinade).

I have a roasted radish side I was planning but could use some other suggestions. I love quinoa, but the bf is not as big a fan. He prefers rice.

Thanks! :)

Instant Coffee

There's a great halal market near my son's father. Next time I do the little man swap, I'll pop in there and see what they have!

Instant Coffee

**An update**

I bought one of those one-cup-drips. Used it for a week. Hated it. I actually liked the taste better from what I was getting out of my instant coffee. So back to the instant I go!!

Thanks for the brand suggestions - the Starbucks is pricey, as I'm now drinking consistently at night while doing homework, but quite honestly? The Target brand did me just fine!

Thanks!!

Good Ramen on Long Island?

I had that wicked cold virus for like 3 weeks. During my stay on the couch I saw the movie, "Ramen Girl" and am now dying for good ramen.

Any suggestions?

I'm in western Suffolk, but might be inspired to drive a little!

Reheating Suggestion!

I had a 2-pack of those frozen pie crusts in aluminum tins. So, instead of making 1 more....substantial quiche with a roll-out crust in my glass pie dish, I made 2 thinner quiches in the aluminum pie pans. One was immediately consumed and one was frozen.

Favorite Long Island Supermarkets

Count me in as one of the Best Yet fans. You will notice some difference from store to store.

I love their produce (although I was at the Meat Farms on 109 and holey moley - what a produce selection!!!) and their deli counter. If I need a specific vegetable or fruit, that's where I head. They also have AMAZING halavah! It's imported from Greece and rivals halavah brought back from Egypt!

You have to know your prices, because on their regular grocery items, sometimes you can do better with sales elsewhere.

I also hit ShopRite a lot - the one on 109 has the best donuts ever. But the store is clean and wonderfully organized and you can do well at their sales.

I also have a tiny little village market on Carleton Avenue in East Islip - chicken cutlets for like 1.99 a pound. Really good sales.

Reheating Suggestion!

Actually, when I went to slice it up, it was approximately the thickness of a thin pizza, so that was a pretty good analogy.

I wanted to avoid the microwave so the crust wouldn't get entirely soggy.

The oven worked fine, but I was unsure of timing and temp.

Reheating Suggestion!

It was frozen solid, so the one-slice option was a no-go. Didn't want to microwave and have the crust get uber-soggy. It worked out okay enough this time. My 5-year-old isn't picky! :)

Chilean Sea Bass prep?

Then I didn't cook it long enough. I love flaky fish. This one was meaty and I just didn't enjoy it.

Reheating Suggestion!

I'd agree - the texture wasn't as good as if I'd have thawed. Will definitely take that into consideration next time!

Cooking bacon in the oven... why the hype?

I bake bacon when making basket weaves for BLT sandwiches. Delish:

Reheating Suggestion!

I'm yanking it right out of the freezer (I figure that's how I prep food from the frozen section!) and the volume takes up the whole aluminum pie pan. (About 8 or 9" in diameter)

Reheating Suggestion!

I have totally bought into making more than needed and freezing, now that my family is just myself and my 5-year-old adventurous eating son. Usually I can just nuke the leftovers and voila, dinner is served. But tonight's plan includes a quiche in an aluminum pie pan, so it'll need to be reheated in the oven.

Any suggestions as far as time and temp?
Thanks!

Chilean Sea Bass prep?

Thanks all. I tried baking in a foil =packed and then broiling. I think I'm just not a huge fan of sea bass as I was waiting for it to flake up, but I don't think it does.

The bf did thoroughly enjoy it though! :)

Olive Oil Infused with Lemon, Cilantro and Roasted Onion

Bought an infused olive oil. It's amazing on bread. But of course, I'd love to cook with it. Any suggestions??
