A sad State

Been anywhere south of the 401 lately? Read any articles on the chefs planning to set up shop in Toronto? Its Carousel Bakery in SLM. Your wrong on many levels.

Origin Question

OP "Any tips you have would be great! I'm really looking forward to it! I have been trying to get a reservation for ever, but have had a hard time planning far enough in advance ha."

chowhounders response - "Boooooo" - honestly, why even post? Not trying to defend Origin, the negativity on this board just sucks sometimes. Can we let hungryabbey be excited without raining on the parade?

I only went for lunch but the Burrata+eggplant+pesto+roasted red peppers, and the spanish fries were both excellent dishes. Don't do the origin burger.

Spice Grinder - which is best?

KRUPS FAST-TOUCH COFFEE MILL, MODEL 203 - Cooks illustrated tested 12 models and this came out on top. Its is only $20, I own one and it is the best. I found mine through Zellers but i'm sure you could find somewhere online to ship you one so you don't have to go on a search for the specific model.

Out of the ordinary wedding venue in Toronto

I was also going to suggest The Richmond. It seems to fit you perfectly. Here is a link to a wedding that took place there. http://www.stylemepretty.com/2011/05/... Just click on the gallery. I do personally prefer to work with Daniel et Daniel at The Richmond, but 10tation is also good and may suit you better. You can also bring in your own alcohol.

Decided to stay up late last night and make them myself. I didn't think I would have time but it ended up working out. Thanks for the recipe!

Can I get thin shaved steak in Toronto?

The best cheesesteaks are made with Rib eye steak. I just buy the Rib eye and ask my butcher to shave it thin. It can also be done at home by putting the steak in the freezer and slicing it thin on your own, and my wife called me crazy for buying a meat slicer for home use.

Krispy Creme Donuts

No need to bring back from Montreal. There is a location at 5920 Mavis Rd
Mississauga that makes them fresh and a location at Harbord and Bathurst that brings them in every day.

New Five Guys Burgers Location coming soon!

Agreed, this place has been way over hyped on here. My wife had a cheeseburger with no toppings the other day and it is clear they rely heavily on their toppings for flavor. The meat was almost flavorless(no salt) had a rubbery texture and the cheese can't hold up to heat. My "all the way" burger was just ok, nothing special, just good. Not worth a trip out of downtown. For me, if I eat burgers all of the time, unlike some, I will get huge fast, so when I get a burger it should be close to the best because its a once in a while thing. I don't want to waste a once in a while experience on average burgers. The best burger out there, is not that different in price from the worst, so why shouldn't we demand the best?

I also don't understand how they will put anyone out of business either. Just because 5guys comes to Canada, doesn't mean our standards of what we eat has changed. People will still support garbage.

Porchetta + Co

The flavor did change since the beginning, but I haven't even thought to mention because it is consistently delicious. Extra herb flavor would be fine with me:)

Porchetta + Co

Anyone else love this place as much as I do? When they are good they are REALLY GOOD. I had one bad sandwich with too much fat. I would prefer a little more meat on the sandwich, but can't complain. The roasted potatoes are excellent and judging by raves about the specials, I gotta get in on that. It has kinda taken over as my fave sandwich spot. The owner seems like a good guy. I do wish his staff would pick it up a bit, they make a sandwich like they are performing surgery. It ends up being a sloppy sandwich anyway. Anyway, LOVE this spot!

I prefer to make homemade shredded hash browns myself, but this is for a funeral potato casserole recipe which called for frozen hash browns.

ISO - Frozen shredded hashbrowns

Ok, so I went back to Loblaws and they are near the deli, but they refrigerated, not frozen???? None of the employees seemed to know what I was looking for....... not many places downtown stock these things. I have to remember to grab some when I'm out of the core.

Hmmmm, this could be my issue because I also used to get them at Loblaws. I might have to check out the deli section I guess. Thanks!

ISO - Frozen shredded hashbrowns

I have been to several No frills, Loblaws, Sobeys, and Metro. Don't ask me why I need them.... but they seem to be hard to find in the GTA. Anyone spotted them lately?

New Five Guys Burgers Location coming soon!

I think the buzz this is getting is an indicating factor on the sad state of food in the suburbs of Canada. Many WASPS will only eat at chains and this is a new one they can ad to the list. I personally wish Culver's would cross the border, that would make me excited. Five guys ,not so much.

Caplanskys Delivery and Food Truck

In a car maybe, but that is 2 extra blocks to ride just for you. Do this 5 times a day and time is lost, time equals money and blah blah blah. It wasn't unreasonable for you to request, but you shouldn't be surprised they shut you down. Why not ask for delivery to queen and oz, go for a walk and meet them there? No biggie.

Any places in Toronto worthy of being on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives?

We have no reason to be embarrassed. If you have been to many of the places featured on DDD, many of them are no better than places we have here in Toronto. Food doesn't have to taste good to make good television.

If anyone is looking for a good Decaf, the Kirkland brand Decaf from Costco is a very good decaf coffee.

Best Doughnuts in Toronto

Ive been to Venizia on ossington for their donuts via chowhound recommendation. They do not fry fresh everyday. The one I got had to of been days old. I can't in my right mind force myself to go back after that. Much of their baked goods sit there for longer than I think they should.

For the Love of Cake - East Liberty Street

I have to agree. Their cupcakes lack finesse and are truly very sloppy. I don't think they are very good at all. You can't just throw anything into a cupcake batter an expect it to taste good. But personally I don't really like cupcakes. I have tried them everywhere as well.from NYC's best to LA. I just think cupcakes suck period and If I get another dry chocolate one I may just have to throw something. The only thing cupcakes have going for them is nostalgia. Otherwise, I would take most well done french pastries over a cupcake any day.

Wedding venue

Check out The Royal Ambassador in Caledon. They have 2 separate outdoor gazebos by the water and it really is a nice setting. I honestly can't speak to how amazing the food is, but I do know they allow outside catering and it seems like the type of venue you might be looking for. Being able to bring in outside catering opens up your options for great food. Here is a blog post on a wedding I worked at there. It was in the outdoor tent but I think the main venue space may be more what your looking for depending on your taste and budget. It is a lot nicer than your average woodbridge banquet hall.
