Recommended dishes at Mission Chinese, Pearl&Ash, Momofuku Ssam, or Betony?

Betony - Absolutely loved the Fried Pickles, the Chicken Liver Mousse and the Roasted Chicked entree. Chef seems to do a better job with gamier dishes. The seafood items were a bit less impressive.

Coming to NYC for one night...want a delicious and beautiful meal. Something like Mistral/Sorellina in Boston

Hotel Griffou has a very unique, hip atmosphere. I was also surprised how much I enjoyed the food.

Recommendations for a woman dining alone in NYC (preferably at the bar)?

L'artusi is a very good spot for eating alone. Nice long spacious bar in the main restaurant with cushioned stools and excellent food. Brussels sprouts are fantastic. Pastas are great as well.

Chefs Are Masochists, Culinary School Is a Scam

My wife left the Fashion world after 23 years and decided to go to a well known NYC culinary school. She said it was one of the hardest things she ever did but she loved it in the end and finished at the top of her class. No matter who you are, you generally have to start at the bottom, putting in long days with very boring chores like slicing vegetables all day. One day she shaved thin sheets of chocolate for six hours straight. A number of places wanted her to work for free for the first six hours straight. In the end it helps to be classically trained to move up fast but you have to "pay your dues" (or be able to fund your own business).

Classic NYC 35TH Bday dinner: Le Bernardin, Jean Georges, La Grenouille, etc - best overall experience?

If you really enjoy seafood, I think Le Bernadin will blow you away. It's truly unique in that regard. If not, I think Daniel is the best overall dining experience in NYC. I'd give Jean George the bronze. You can't go wrong with any of these three in my view.

New, cool vibe and good food downtown this week - similar to Kenmare or Standard

Travertine on that same street is also good. The food is excellent and they just opened a new club in the basement.

ISO an interesting, upscale Asian restaurant not by David Chang

I'd say either Morimoto or Buddakan would both be memorable. The food at SHO is great but it's really French with Asian accents and it's out of the way.

Trendy but good recommendation for dinner with a college kid?

Travertine is very good for italian has a great atmosphere. If you want steak, Quality Meats uptown is trendier than most mid town steak houses and the food is excellent. Macelleria is in the meatpacking so around "everything trendy" but the food is only good.

Go to Kittichai in Soho. It also has availability according to opentable. See if you can get upstairs to the rooftop for drinks after. It's perfect for a ladies night out. Have a great time!

Top 5 Most Overrated in Manhattan

To be honest, I have not tried Annisa since it reopened and will have to give it another shot. Historically, I think the press/ foodie community has considered Anita Lo a "chef's chef" with her classical training etc. making them more inclined to print positive reviews.
I first dined at Veritas five years ago and found it to be one of the five best restaurants in the city. I recently returned last year and although still very good, the current incarnation seemed to be resting on its laurels just a bit. The overrated label is more due to the lofty perch that I originally placed it in my mind.
I had a big Christmas dinner at Cru a while ago and was extremely excited after all I had read. People were dressed like they were at TGIF's, the room was drab, service was only modestly friendly and the food was forgettable. I think it would be "lost in the shuffle" of NY restaurants if it wasn't for the publicity it gets for its wine list.
Hype has certainly been building for Aldea as of late and I wasn't in love with the dining room but I just found the menu to be particularly innovative.

Seafood for a 50th Birthday

I'd recommend Lure Fishbar in Soho. It's got an expansive menu of seafood items including shellfish and sushi. It's not too formal and not too casual with a vibrant downtown vibe and decent bar scene. Ask for one of the comfortable round booths.

NYC with 10 year old Granddaughter.....restaurant suggestions needed.

Take her over to Ruby Foos for tempura shrimp and then pudding with gummy worms for dessert. It's a bit touristy right in Times Square but kids love it and the food/sushi is actually quite good.

Travertine - Kenmare St. ?

Thinking about taking a group here for dinner. I stopped in to take a look at the place at brunch time and it's sleek and comfortable looking but the reviews appear to be a mixed bag. Is this place serving quality fare or is it just a scene?

kid friendly restaurants

Carmine's is great for kids. Ruby Foos in Timesquare is also very good. Food is pretty decent, they move you along quickly and they give the kids pudding filled with gummy worms for dessert. "44X & Hell's Kitchen" is also an interesting choice. It's a bit more upscale and the crowd is a bit more "eclectic" but they welcome kids and the food is good.
