Trip report (long): Bologna, Ravenna, Umbria, Rome

Thanks for your report. I am happy to hear that Antica Hostaria delle Valle is still good. We ate there in 2011 and really enjoyed it.

A day in Modena, with an acetaia thrown in

I think an advantage to doing Pedroni would be eating lunch there. I understand it is very good.

Honeymoon in Italy (Genoa, Cinque Terre, Bologna, Modena, Parma, Venice, Tuscany, and Florence)

If you do go to Venice for the day, take the train. Do not drive.

I like having my big meal at lunch. I have not been to Antiche Carampane or Al Covo, but think very highly of Alle Testiere and L'Anice Stellato. We recently had spectacular lunches at both places.

Whoa! Slow down a bit. It is Italy, afterall.

We loved our lunch at Piccola Trattoria Guastini. It is in Valiano, not Montepulciano.

Southern Tuscany report (part 1): Pitigliano, Valiano, Montalcino, Siena

Thanks for your reviews. We also had an amazing lunch at Guastini. I don't know why we didn't eat there earlier in the trip. We would have returned for sure.

Mostly meat in Venice -trip report

Thanks for the report. People are reading.

We ate at many of the same places!

La Bitta our first meal after arriving too. I had one most of my memorable dishes of our two week trip to Italy there. Fabulous gnocchi with a rabbit ragu was spectacular and had me exclaiming, "It is so good to back in Italy!"

We also ate at Ai Artisiti and loved it. We shared a seafood antipasti plate that had great things on it, the best of which was believe it or not...cuttlefish roe! Very sweet and easily consumed. I had a generous portion of swordfish that was perfectly prepared. We also were served branzino, and two lovely pastas...the standout was a large penne type pasta with green beans and chunks of angler fish.

We would...and hopefully will eat at either place again.

Thanks for bringing the memories back to the front of my jet-lagged brain.

Venice restaurant picks?

Sure Jen,
At Anice Stellato every course was a standout. Appetizers were baked tuna "bits", cubes of perfectly cooked tuna encrusted in sesame and other seeds. This was served with delicate pickled vegetables and dipping sauces. The tuna was flavorful and sweet. Next app was a grilled baby octopus salad served on fava bean puree. The greens were a thick disk of slightly blanched spinach and one other unidentifiable one. The greens sat on the puree and were surrounded by several small, lovely, perfectly grilled baby octopus. Primo one was a souffle-like concoction with cubes of angler fish, chunks of artichoke and thin pasta noodles. Primo two was a plate of spaghetti in a light tomato sauce with two gargantuan shrimp sitting on top. Secondi one was baked branzino served with a little mound of tomatoes and fried potatoes. It was incredible and the portion size would have easily fed two, but I managed it.
Secondo two was a gorgeous Frito misto of vegetables and fish. It was jaw dropping. Everything was simple, yet refined in its presentation. I'd go back to Venice just to eat there. I am on the go but will post more later.

Venice restaurant picks?

I was in Venice last week and our best meal hands down was our lunch at L'Anice Stellato.

We also had a very nice dinner at Osteria Enoteca Ai Artisti.

Lunch at Alle Testiere was fantastic.

Venice. 5 Days. Looking for best cicchetti bars and casual dining.

We'll be in Venice soon too and Osteria Al Squero in Dorsoduro was recommended by a friend. It is near where we are staying so we will probably give it a try.

Olive Oil Estate Tours

We visited olive oil producers while we were in Umbria. Our favorite was Nunzi in Cantalupo. I called a couple of days ahead of time and they were waiting for us. We tasted the oil and were served copious amounts of bruschetta as well. The oil was fantastic, but the experience of being there was just as good.

Rome and Tuscany Trip Report

Hi GyroBall,

Thanks for your report. Many of the places you mention are on my list for our trip in June so I appreciate your reviews
.
About the restaurant at La Bandita Townhouse...do they serve just guests or is it open to non-guests? Is there outdoor dining there?

Thanks!

Mostly Tuscany, some Rome/Milan/Florence, Sept/Oct 2013

Thanks for report. We will be in Southern Tuscany next year and your notes from the restaurants you visited in that area will be very helpful. We are staying in Montepulciano, so visiting Gattavecchi seems like a no-brainer. Thanks again!

Lunch in Orvieto- Where not to miss?

We had a wonderful lunch at La Palomba in June. Umbricelli with shaved truffles! The wild boar in a spicy red sauce was delicisous as were the grilled sausages. It is a fun and casual place with a very friendly vibe.

Bella La Palomba in Orvieto

We had a late lunch here on June 22 and loved everything about it. It is a lively and friendly place with excellent service. Our hotel made us a reservation. Even though we were an hour late, the restaurant held a lovely table for us right by a front door in the second room.

We started with bruschetta with tomatoes and a mixed platter with prosciutto and four different bruschetta including tartufo, peppers, one soaked in the most delicious olive oil, and another that I cannot remember.

Primis were Umbricelli con tartufo. The pasta was delicious, thick and tender. Having the tartufo shaved on at the table was fun. The flavor and seasoning were perfect.

Secondi were a delicious plate of chingale in a spicy tomato sauce that was delicious, tender and flavorful and a plate of grilled sausages that were sweet with a nice crispy outer texture without being dried out inside.

Both would have been better with a contorni of some sort, but we weren't sure we could handle it.

We had two bottles acqua frizzante and dui cafes.

The bill came to something like 50 euros.

Highly recommended!

Best picks near Spoleto?

A review was just posted yesterday for Locanda Rovicciano near Castel Ritaldi which is near Spoleto. We will be in the area in June and it was recommended to me by someone who lives locally.

Any recs ins Southern Umbria?

Antica Hosteria de la Valle in Todi comes highly recommended by friends who have eaten there and from reviews I read here and other places.

It is on our list for our upcoming trip in June for at least lunch and possibly dinner as well.

Todi is not far from Orvieto.

I'll throw in a vote for Armando al Pantheon. Delicious Roman food in a very unfussy and friendly place.

Rome for Meat Eaters?

The braised lamb hearts with artichokes at Armando al Pantheon were delicisous. I second the suggestion for oxtail at Checchino. What a wonderful sauce!

I would make resevations.. Armando's is small and fills up quickly ( we ate dinner there, so can't comment on lunch.) We were walking by in the afternoon and stopped in and made reservations for that evening. They were turning people away without reservations that night.
