Hi. The Sommelier was Maxwell Leer. He helped open the Tasting Kitchen and did their original list, and then worked at the Bazaar for some time. He definitely knows his wines, and you're right -- somebody should definitely snap him up. My shop (Domaine LA) did the wine list for LQ.

Are there any decent wines under $7?

don't have time to read through all these posts so forgive any repetition. The Protocolo Tinto and Blanco are decent for under $7 a bottle, as is Borsao. They won't blow you away, but I find them far more appealing than the Yellowtails of the world...

I should add...Trader Joe's gets their wines from one distributor for the most part, so you're missing out if you're just picking your wines up there. Zin1953 makes a good point about learning from your smaller/local wine merchants. Though there is one wine that I like a lot at Trader Joe's (from a different distributor than the majority of their wares), and that's the 05 Perrin Reserve Cotes du Rhone. It's $6.99 and I think the best deal in the store.

Orin Swift's "The Prisoner"...

The 05 and the 06 Prisoner have slightly different flavor profiles. The 05 I feel had a bit more structure (more tannin, especially) and darker fruit. The 06 is more red in character, and has a touch less acidity and tannin, which means it should be a young drinker. My personal preference is for the 05 but they are both worthy wines.

Selling Wine in Online Auctions: any experiences?

In order to ship via Fed-Ex or UPS, you have to register with them and provide them with a license from your state's Alcohol Bureau. So, unless you have a license, it's basically not legal for you to sell or ship -- though tons of people do it.

Cantine Grotta del Sole - looking for West Coast distributor

Does anybody know who handles the Cantine Grotta del Sole wines on the west coast (LA in particular)? They have the wines at Mozza but they are not in any retail stores except on the east coast according to wine-searcher. Quick googles are turning up nothing...

Thanks!

Wine to go with the Le Vin aromas kit?

L'Ecole No. 41 wines should be readily available, are great, and should be well within the pricerange you set...

Help?? Anyone have a wine aroma/essence kit? Le Nez du Vin or similar?

Profit margin is less than average compared to other wine-related accessories (or packaged goods in general) but it is a very specialized product. It is a very high quality item so I consider it worth offering even if the margins are slightly tighter.

LMelba, I guess my point was t the $109 being the lowest price on the web was that it would HAVE to be the lowest price on the web for aforementioned reasons. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

TN: Champagne Canard-Duchêne Grand Cuvée Charles VII Brut Rosé

I only mentioned they might be the importer because they tried to sell to me with D.I. pricing. But it's possible they were mis-using the term.

the prices are set on the Le Nez kits. to sell them, you have to agree to their minimum prices ($109 being the price for the red or white kits).

Wine recommendation website?

I think you're probably referring to Bottlenotes. They're an internet wine retailer that aims to be the netflix of wine...i.e., making recommendations based on your likes and dislikes. You can sign up on their site and they lead you through a series of questions that supposedly helps them figure this out, and then if you sign up for one of their clubs, they apparently tailor shipments based on your personal taste. I have not signed up for Bottlenotes so I can't confirm that they actually personalize each club shipment...but being in the business and knowing how tedious wine clubs can be from a logistical standpoint, I find this a tad hard to believe.

I also have to agree with others that computer algorithms aren't really the answer here, and interaction with a salesperson is probably going to steer you in a more accurate direction.

Oh, there's another online club site, WineQ, that allows you to sort of create your own wine of the month club (in a more Netflix, create a Queue kind of way) and maybe that's what you're referring to?

Everybody else, thanks for the tips. I'll check out some of the ones mentioned.

Le Nez also has red and white kits. same prices if not less than Williams Sonoma. The Le Nez kits have great packaging and really nice supporting materials.

Red Car Wine Release

Red Car is getting pricey, but the Box Car line is still under $30 a bottle. Personally, though, I prefer their smaller production bottlings. The 2005 Amour Fou was unmistakably Pinot Noir; fairly subtle, utterly drinkable. The Shake Rattle Roll is very silky Syrah, a little pricey at $50 but then so are many other wines. The Aphorist is miniscule production (maybe 200 cases or fewer) which accounts for the high ($70 or so) price. Red Car has not reached the $90 and up zone. Pax on the other hand...

wow, this topic sank like a ton of bricks. I personally find it hard to believe that wine bulletin board posters and lurkers don't also peruse wine blogs, but I guess I'm wrong...

I believe Henry Wine Group is distributing Canard-Duchene and may even be importing it as well. They are giving it a huge push and the regular NV Brut is being blown out at Costco among other places for $28 a bottle or so.

Lookiong for the name of the house wine at Nora's in Las vegas...

Winebow wines are distributed in SoCal by the Henry Wine Group...so it should be easily orderable at your local wine store, should you live in SoCal.

Whoops, I just noticed you're not in California...but it should be orderable still through any good wine store.

Top 10 Overrated Wines

This is a silly post that could have been both funny AND pointed. To dismiss entire grape varieties or countries is just absurd. When they get specific, there is much more power. Though how could we tell that Screaming Eagle is really over-rated since 99.999% of us will never have the chance to try it?

For me, I would say that the Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz is overrated, but the Boxer is not. I would say that Cloudy Bay Sauv Blanc is overrated, but other NZ Sauv Blancs can be quite interesting. I think Silver Oak in general is way over-rated. And the list goes on and on and on...

which wine to pair with turkey?

I agree you can stay in the $20 and under zone and do very well...for reds I think Loire Cab Francs and Cru Beaujolais go very well. For whites, try the Loire Valley again with dry Chenin Blanc.

Origin of best QPR Wines

I buy from AIW, Henry, Martine's, Regal, Henry, Wine House (SF), Southern, Young's...believe me when I say there is limited availability of the table wines. Maybe one or two producers (sometimes just one or two wines) per book. Martoletto has a better list, as does Maddelena.

2005 75 Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon Amber Knolls

tasted the '05 this week. it's very different than the '04. Less complex, more new world, fruit forward. pure red fruit and less Rutherford style smoke. I think it's still a good wine and will probably appeal to newer drinkers, though I'm partial to the '04.

WineAccess online source for wine

wineaccess is a site that is a conglomerate of different wine stores. For instance, Wine House in LA uses wineaccess as their internet portal, and so does Vino Divino in Newton, MA. They charge quite a bit for their services.

I suspect the great offers they can come up with are close-out deals that they get from the stores within their "network" of affiliates. Possibly bin-ends, possibly distributor direct deals. I have some experience buying with stores who use the wineaccess software, but not with wineaccess directly. I do find their interface for the stores to be limited, so you can usually spot stores using the service (that, and the URL usually contains wineaccess -- just type in http://winehouse.com and you'll see what I mean).
