Ideas for an evening picnic?

Stick tea lights or similar candles in mason jars to make a sort of hurricane lamp protected from the wind. If the jars are too deep - fill partially with sand.

And most definitely veggie samosas.

Water- how is it in your city?

Detroit water is good. I'm perfectly happy to drink from the tap. The worst I've had was in San Angelo TX. It was so awful I could barely bring myself to shower in it much less drink it.

dried cherries

I've had the Shorline Cherries - purchased from a Meijer's near Detroit - and they are really good. Like a tart cherry explosion in the mouth. I'm looking forward to using some to make cherry walnut scones.

haagen dasz pints now 14 fl ozs

'recession sizing'. I too wish they'd just up the price - recipes often call for a can of this or a box of that. Sneaky sneaky.

Stupid easy recipes you really love

I'm not much of a baker either - I'm going to have to try this - it sounds good!

Pinconning Cheese Company [Michigan]

I can't help you with the cheese - but if you're looking for some good pickled ring bologna - my local favorite is from the Dearborn Sausage Co. I really like it. It reminds me of summers Up North and it hasn't disappointed yet.

I want to lash out against the chicken breast-ification of restaurant food

I hope people keep snatching up those chicken breasts and ordering them like there's no tomorrow, so the price of the stuff I like (thighs) stays lower.

Pies - Sweet or Savoury - Your Favourite

For sweet pies any kind of berry pie is good, as is cherry. I like most cream pies as well. I like mince on occassion. Apple is probably one of my least favorite - having had it far too often as a child.

Pasties are a favorite for savory pies. I also like Lebanese style spinach pies

Most unhealthy thing you have seen or eaten

I would have replied that a Scottish egg would have been the most unheathy thing I'd heard of - but that would have been before I read this thread. Now... I'm pretty sure that egg is right up there in the health food section next to the tofu and the non-fat whatever-it-is's.

Grocery question to CHers

I've run into a little bit of a financial bump and have started being much more economical than before. Before (as in before last month) I still watched for sales etc., as money was still tight, but now I've begun eating more in the way of rice and beans etc. If nothing else it's a good challenge to come up with things that are tasty, relatively healthy, and still cheap. I have also started baking more - cornbread, cookies etc, which I rarely did before. I'm much better at cooking than baking - the precision required of baking eludes me - antithetical to my personality almost. I've been doing okay, though and am learning.

Sliders in Metro Detroit

I'll second Green's. Good stuff there, wish it were closer to the east side.

The best easy-to-find maple syrup

The discussion is completely appropriate. Good, inexpensive Maple Syrup is what the poster was inquiring about - how could grades of Maple Syrup NOT enter into this? If another poster doesn't care about what kind of syrup they're using - I'm not sure why they'd reply to a post asking for information regarding the product.

Personally - I go for Trader Joes B grade - it's what my budget can handle and it's pretty good.

Special Chili Ingredient

I like chile that's thick, sweet (not super sweet, but a little sweet) and very hot - the prunes help with the first two points. And assisting the Revolutionary Chile Movement (as dubbed by Passadumkeg) doesn't hurt either - I'm not getting any younger.

hot sauce in a bottle - favorites?

I like Sriracha on sandwiches and in soups - sometimes on eggs. Habanero Tabasco is good too. I keep ground Hanbaneros around for when I'm just looking for some heat.
