New Five Guys Burgers Location coming soon!

Oh I know about the processed cheese, processed is part of the appeal, but this stuff is gawdawful! Literally flavoured plastic. Yick!

I'd be more than happy to try them again, just never again the cheeseburger.

BTW not only is the music too loud, but it's all treble so it's even more ear piercing. *sigh* Maybe it's different if the place was packed but nearly empty with all that hard surface it's a torture. I ate my food and fled quick. Perhaps that's the point?

New Five Guys Burgers Location coming soon!

Went today for lunch. Not crowded at all which was nice. Service was very fast.

Had the "Cheeseburger". Two patties with cheese and toppings. If you're a connoisseur don't bother with the cheese. Horrible stuff! Flavoured plastic that has the only quality of a low melting point. The patties themselves were good. Better than I expected, juicy, not overcooked, flavourful. The bun was average but not too big. Had sesame seeds on it but it was fairly generic.

Overall I'd give it an average grade. Plus on the meat, minus on the cheese, plus on the toppings tho not overwhelming, at least not a ridiculous upcharge. The biggest hit I'd give them is that for the money I'd much rather get a grilled patty, not a griddle fryer. Might try them again but it's not worth the drive.

Whitby/Durham restaurants that don't suck

Try Daddy's Little Grill on Westney below Bayley in Ajax. It's in the Giant Tiger plaza at Westney and Lake Driveway. A limited menu but everything is made fresh and from scratch. Reasonable prices and great portions.
A great thing is that you can talk to George -- both the cook and the owner and he will modify (within reason) to your taste. Very cool guy.

Openings 2010

Daddy's Little Grill keeps getting better. If you're in Ajax I'd recommend looking George up. I had the Hot Hamburger last night and it was great. Hand cut fries, hand made patty, very fresh bread. George is doing it right.

Daddy's Little Grill

A new place just opened up near me (Tuesday - he's not had the Grand Opening yet) and I just had to try it out. Damn good, is what I'd have to say. Generous portions, well made, good pricing.

A fairly basic menu, Pastas, Chicken, Steak, Pork Chops, Hamburgers. Nothing fancy, just the stuff that you'd find on a grill. It's definitely a work in progress ... Greg, the chef/owner came out to see how the meal was and asked questions which was neat and indicated that he'll be having daily specials and whatnot but he's still working things out.

I have high hopes for this place. I'll be going back for few more menu items just to see.

Frozen Diced Onions

I can't find these anywhere, anymore.

Food Basics had them but discontinued it, No Frills/Loblaws never seems to have had them, M&M's has stopped carrying them and now they've disappeared out of Sobey's (Arctic Ocean brand).

I don't know what gives but does anyone have another source? East GTA preferred.

LCBO taxation

Even better, the percentage should be dropping because of the HST in July but our oh so wonderful premier is going to "top it up" again to maintain the prices. Can't have any "bargains" now can we?

Meat pies

Where do you go to get a good commercial frozen meat pie? I've bought the Mortimer's from Sobey's which taste fine but are really -- surprisingly -- badly/sloppily made. Is there better? At one time M&M's had good meat pies but they don't seem to carry them now.

I like to keep a few on hand in the freezer for those emergency dinner nights when easy is the watchword.

It seems like Bumble Bee Tuna has gone down in quality

Tuna, as with almost everything coming out of the sea today, is over fished. A mature tuna is between 650 and 1000 lbs. The average weight these days is 50 lbs. Yes, they're babies. That means loss of flavour and texture and if they're a farmed fish, probably a loss of nutrients as well.
And any of the mass market brands are going to be the same. The same fleets catch the fish and the same canneries process them. It's just different labels.

ISO mini cannisters with snap lid like these

Look into your local Bulk Barn. Most have the strangest containers on the top shelf. Another resource is Lee Valley Tools. Probably too big and in stainless but they will be of high quality and relatively cheap.

Fat Cat Bistro not honouring gift certificates (moved from Ontario board)

BTW, Ontario passed a law forbidding expiry dates on Gift Cards. Whether that would affect a card bought in 2008 I don't know.

Stainless Steel Splits Open?

That's weird. Can you be more specific?
How old was the pot? What were you cooking? How high was the heat? Did you boil it dry or not have anything in it? Were the two pots the same brand and/or manufacturer?

Farmer's Market - East GTA

Anyone know of a decent market that you can get good fruits and veggies in the summer that won't cost an arm and leg? I know it's early but it's good to plan ahead.

Do people really (and I mean "really") like Girl Scout Cookies?

Sadly, with all the acquisitions, GS cookies aren't anywhere as good as they used to be. Christie Brown used to make them and they were gorgeous and addictive. Unfortunately Christies is no more and their good recipes have gone the way of the dodo.
Kraft has come to Canada in a big way and bought up all the commercial bakeries. Chrisites, Nabisco, Dad's and Peek Freans have disappeared and the recipes changed to a more american type. Far more icing sugar, HFCS has appeared and the sizes are smaller. Smaller, sweeter and harder.

That said, I think that GS cookies are baked by Dare now, but that is the same deal, P&G instead of Kraft. Not the same great cookie at all. *Sigh*.

What is there now after closing? Le Biftheque

Are you talking about the one downtown or the one on Woodbine in Markham? The Markham one is now The Fish House which moved from Sheppard Ave.

Was at the Jack Astors at STC last Sunday and they've changed. No more earsplitting music and the arcade has gone from the back. Much better.

Comparisons of alternative non-sticks?

You're going to hate me for this but there isn't a single pan out there that will last for you. You abuse your cookware and cook at too high a heat. That's why everything sticks and having gouges "ruin a surface after only a year" is terrible.
You haven't heard of wooden or silicone spatulas? Plastic spoons? It's not rocket science.

What's your favorite (sweetest) brand of frozen corn? (moved from Ontario board)

I can't find PC frozen veg at all. I thought that they had discontinued them and just went with the yellow generic. :(
I figured that the processor had disappeared. I'm finding that there's been a lot less variety in the market lately. You either have the house brand or GG. That's it.

The Keg - Markham Road

The Keg uses a very nice cut of meat for their steaks. It's hard for them to screw that up. OTOH their sides are half assed at best with things like the Garlic Mashed Potatoes particularily mediocre.
Overall the chain seems to be fairly consistent quality wise, you are paying for the meat afterall and generally don't have too many problems. Still, scheduling is an issue. Busy Friday and Saturdays can be a problem.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement but you could do a LOT worse. Just check the board! :)

Sirloin suggestion

I going to commit heresy and recommend Sobey's. The South Ajax store, ever since it was an IGA, has always had a good meat cutting crew and it hasn't changed. With their specials happening all the time the meat is excellent quality, generous portions and great pricing.

BEST BURGERS IN TORONTO!! ??

Went back the other day and had the 8oz burger. No fries. It was great! It turns out the 8oz is sirloin. A little pricy at $5.59 but really good.

BTW skipped the pager thing. Just tell them no.

Buying great olive oil

Ok. I understand being a connessieur. But I can't afford it, unfortunately. What is a good commercial grade of oil? EVO or not. Is there a brand that performs nicely on a consistent basis? Something that's available at your local No Frills or whatever?

Scarborough Gems

I'm sure everyone remembers but I'll just remind them that Ruby Chinese is no more. They were run into bankruptcy after being shut down for health violations.

A real problem for some restaurants.

BTW, T&T's is now owned by Loblaws. Whether that changes things, we'll have to see.

ISO - Toasty Meatball Sub / Grinder / Hoagie

You might try Nino D'Aversa Bakery at Toro Rd and Keele. I'm just passing along rep because I haven't tried them myself (not my area) but supposedly they're quite good. Typical Italian sandwich joint. Been there for years.

Anyone else tried them?

Why Cora's sucks...?

I was underwhelmed once I got the bill. Out in Pickering you can't throw an egg without hitting a decent 'spoon that can do the same or better for less money. The value just isn't there.
That said, I do like what they do with their homefries. There's a lemony taste that's very refreshing. Don't know what they do to it but that's the only thing that would bring me back.

Funny enough, across the the road from Masseys is a pretty good burger joint called the Big M. Generous size and great milkshakes. Not gourmet by any means, just a simple drive-in style restaurant.

BEST BURGERS IN TORONTO!! ??

I didn't ask. I wanted to see what it was like without changes. I liked it, it was well cooked without going overboard. Still moist. I think it's pure beef, if there's filler, it's light, just enough to keep the meat together.
I had cheese on mine and it was real cheddar, not processed.

The pager thing is lame. There's maybe 10 tables in a small shopfront. Hello? Just tell me it's ready. Maybe during the lunch rush it'd be necessary but rather overdone with 4 customers in the place.

BEST BURGERS IN TORONTO!! ??

There's a new place opened up in the No Frills Plaza on Bayley, 2 doors down from the LCBO. Pretty good. It's called The Butcher's Grill.
Their gimmick: the meat is in a display case and you pick it out and they grill it. All fresh, and handmade. 5 oz and 8 oz patties, steaks (strip loin) chicken, sausage etc. Reasonable pricing, premium burger territory but not outrageous. 5 oz is $5.99. It goes on a square bun, I'm not sure what -- chiabatta? but it's great. Only marginal thing is the fries, Cavendish old style I think, at least it's not the McCain's coated crap that's everywhere lately. Very decent. I'm going back to sample more menu - without the fries this time.
